The war resulted in larger destroyers. The American destroyers of the Allen M. Sumner class displaced 2,200 tonnes, while the largest vessels in the Arleigh Burke class can displace up to 9,600 tonnes. Furthermore, destroyers were able to perform the surface-combatant responsibilities once held by battleships and cruisers thanks to the development of guided missiles. Because of this, modern guided-missile destroyers have grown in size and strength, becoming increasingly capable of operating independently.

@Rohit Gaikwad good looking ships are irrelevant, Kirov-class Battlecruisers look amazing, as do Slava-class Cruisers. But what good do looks do you if you're at the bottom of the sea, some would argue that the Moskva looks better at the ocean floor, and I'm inclined to agree. Also, Burke has stealth features, there's a reason for the angled features that point up and away from the surface. The same reason there isn't a huge radar dish or array at the very top. More modern ships have done a better job of hiding comms and other sensors

Still, software is easy, but you need hardware that support it. Burke may be good destroyer, but defitly not number 1 anymore.

@@Joshua-dt5vi Perhaps not but there is limit how much new tech one hull can hold, how many times you can upgrade it. I do not say that Flight III is not good ship, its a good modern ship, but US navy do not upgrade all its ships at same level. I doubt every single Burke class have the best equipment on board. Heck first Flight even now do not have hangar bay. Upgrading ships is not cheap, more work is done more it cost. Try upgrading Ticonderoga class, 40+ old design. You can rebuild them, you can rebuild the hull and superstructure to be 21th century cruiser but it will quite expensive and time consuming. Vicksburg just finish its 3 years of upgrade and was to be retired?? Flight III will most definitly stay for decades in service with its sucessor the DDG(X), but i would not be surprised if ships of first flight woud not be retired by the end of this decade. I dobut Flight I Burke can take on new destroyers that entering service. Still Burke class does remain number one on the list because of its long carrer and numbers. New destroyers are to enter service quite soon.

Im Australian and although i would like it to be up here, it kinda doesn't deserve to be. It lacks in power compared to newer Destroyers and only packs 48 VLS cells compared to newer ships which carrier above 64 and around 96. It was also a bit over budget but that doesn't mean much and also it was delayed. It is very powerful and in a Top 20 destroyer ranking, i'd place it around below 15 so 15-10. Same thing with the Anzac class as it lacks firepower and would prob rank around 15.

Hobart class destroyers lack in VLS cells compared to newer ships by a massive amount and the sensors are in the middle i'd say. Many other destroyers carry much more firepower so it probably doesn't deserve to be up here however it would be close.

It's easily on par with a type 45 or horizon class, it's basically a smaller Burke class just with a better integrated fire control system. It should be in this list especially after the Aegis system is upgraded to the latest version.

@Rohit B I understand why you'd put ASW as number 1, it just reflects the different doctrines of other countries. In the US for example, our primary ship-killers is the Carrier Air Wing. Attack submarines are obviously the best suited for the task, but also the most at risk. So for US doctrine, Destroyers and Cruisers are tasked with defending air space and the ASuW mission to keep the carrier safe. And I wouldn't be confident about a 1v1. The US uses the GQM-163 Coyote to test their defense. It's 10 feet shorter and has a 10 inch smaller diameter than the Brahmos, and it's capable of sea-skimming at an altitude of about 5 m at over mach 2.5 in terminal phase. And just the cherry on top, it also maneuvers and has ECM. Problem with current Arleigh Burkes though is lack of LRASMs

Your list should not include the Type 52c Destroyer, it is way down the list even the Australian Hobart Class is superior than the Type 52c.
