I had not thought of that. That’s sad. Maybe that’s partly why the daughter stayed as calm as she did though. So wait… I was not watching every single second like paying perfect attention. I just assumed they were boyfriend and girlfriend and they had already said that was her daughter. But at one point I thought he is also fairly patient (saying he didn’t want her there right now but not never again I’ve had it) and a supportive BF and then for a second I wondered, is that her son too and not her daughter’s boyfriend? And I mean siblings can be roommates especially if mom couldn’t keep a roof over their head and they are doing that together. Anyway, I dismissed that thought and just figured it was her mom and he’s a good boyfriend. But now somebody said something about “…her kids.” So do we know any of this for sure? I know they were talking to him first so I probably just missed a sentence or two in the beginning.

There are actions she could and probably SHOULD take for the police her family and society as a whole but in order to keep giving her mother chances she's ONLY calling the cops and micro managing the removal and going to use this incident as a control mechanism 9 times out of ten but she'll either forget this encounter or get high and brazen and it will repeat itself 😢 maybe it's not her fault but it's her responsibility until she stops taking responsibility for it and THAT is her fault ❤

Child psychiatry here. Lots of folks commenting on how the kids seem very mature and empathetic. They definitely do. This is common in children of addicts. They have to be an adult too early which results in the accrual of wisdom and emotional intelligence advanced for age. It's sad. When a kiddo comes into the office seeming like that, they are often more traumatized than the kids who come in presenting as childish or selfish. And this young lady is so considerate of her mom which is another common dynamic. The kids usually become simultaneously protective of the addict parent while being resentful of their behavior. It is really hard for them, creates a lot of cognitive dissonance.

The daughter is in an abusive relationship with her mother. The aggression, the manipulation, the coercive control, emotional, mental and I’m sure financial abuse, among other things. I’m a former addict, 4 years sober, though I never acted this way, I always considered it to be my problem that I created. I know it’s an illness but for me it was my problem. I tried to control the damage. I isolated myself even more than addiction does, I kept my job, paid my bills, kept up with family and social responsibilities as best I could but for the most part I kept everyone out of it, I was just good at hiding it, so much so that when I finally got help nobody had suspected anything. Addiction is hard, it’s hard on the people you love during and even after you seek recovery, it’s a selfish act to drag other people into it with you as collateral damage. The daughter doesn’t know any better, she needs counseling for herself. I’d be shocked if they hadn’t already tried to get the mother into treatment a number of times. One universal truth about addiction and recovery is accountability- only the addict can get sober. I certainly hope things turn around for this family.

My mom named me after her fave drug of choice, both her & my dad were also drunks. With that being said, I grew up way too fast. I had 2 younger brothers that I had to take care of. One of them is less than a year and a half younger than me. The things we saw and were put through no child should. I am a 43 year old adult now, and she recently passed back in October. I had distanced myself from her about 15 years ago and hadn't spoken to her in over a year when we found out she passed. For years I've been convinced my trauma led to my medical issues (physical and mental). I feel like a chaotic mess internally, but always get told I'm an old soul & that my parents raised me well. These strangers (I worked years in the tourism industry) would never know what my childhood was like & that I raised myself & my 2 brothers. It's not easy being forced to live that life. I know I'm still struggling due to her life choices, and since I didn't get to hash out my issues with her before her passing unexpectedly, I feel robbed. So I have taken pen to paper and typing out all my grievances and it's helping. Pretty sure my next step is therapy. I hope no one else here or who watches this, has ever had the life experiences I have endured. If you do/have, I hope you find the courage to get out and get help.

There is a family in my town that is very similar to this. The mother fell onto meth when her husband died. dragged her 19 year old son down with her. My fiancee and I tried to give the daughter a place to live that wasn't couch surfing at highly questionable locations. Mother was siphoning survivors benefits off of the daughter. We fixed that too. She is a really bright girl but in the end shes been steeped in that crowd too much and went back to them, but not before stealing a ton of our shit on the way out. This poor daughter, I was an Al-Anon kid from 11-17 (but shkuld have been since age 5)... I totally feel her pain. It is so, SO HARD to be the child of a hard-core alky/drug addict! Addiction ruins so many lives but when the addict has children... they become the true victims. I'm now in my very late 40's & will be affected in many ways until I die, including becoming an addict myself (although in recovery for many yrs) Ppl who do not understand the disease of addiction, or how it trickles down thru the generations are more blessed than they know or could EVER understand!

My niece did this to me, she came for a two week visit with 5 31 inch Pullman suitcases, she left when I refused to drive her to Walmart AGAIN, she had already been three times that particular day, she had the limo drivers in my house while I was sleeping at 4am, because she wasn't finished 'packing', she wakes up my husband and DEMANDs that he 'git' her packed bags, then he asks me to help her because she was 'packing' the contents of the trash can in the guest room. She took precious heirlooms with her. After she was gone, she had the Limo Drivers bring her back three times for things she 'forgot'... She then turned my entire surviving family against me, I have been told I am not invited to weddings, even funerals.

The thing I haven't heard anybody comment yet and I think after having experienced drug addicts in my life being close to them and trying sometimes to compete with them and failing, there's no way I could get as high as high as I have seen people as I've experienced. It's incredibly annoying but I don't think that people understand who've never done it or been around it. They don't care anymore ..drugs but especially that one makes you just not really care anymore. You don't care what people think. You don't care what people feel. You just don't care. That's why it's so ridiculous. Their behavior is almost comical because it's obvious they just they're not even embarrassed anymore. Are trying to hide it. It's like oh well. I am what I am and that means you know there's definitely no fixing it. You might as well just walk away because they don't care enough to get sober or to even act right. They're just high and peeling oranges and smoking cigarettes and not wanting to leave somewhere where you're not wanted. That's what's important😢

@@cindylong624 That's a pretty pessimistic view. As a former addict of 15 years I can tell you from first hand experience, there's always hope. Sure, she might want to consider going, "no contact," and should probably stop enabling her but to say that, essentially, she should just give up is admitting defeat. The longer addiction runs it's course, the longer and more difficult it is to rebuild everything lost in the fire but it can be done. This is, by far, the most difficult thing I have ever done in my life and every day I remember my struggle and am immensely proud of myself. When everything and everyone else is gone there is and always will be hope.
