As someone who has always loved the inspiration, I can still agree with basically every critique you have leveled at it. Whenever I get to the end of it, I expect the vocals to keep layering over each other over and over and over till the end of time.

When I saw you listed Two Tribes, I had to stifle a "WHAT?!" but your reasoning makes sense. I had to look up Nolan Thomas in Wikipedia regarding Yo' Little Brother...turns out he didn't sing that track. This was a total Milli Vanilli moment! Finally, as I've said in my other video reviews: Peter...Cetera.

I wonder if George Michael liked the Christmas song because he was a part of it, or if he hated it because it prevented "Last Christmas" from reaching number one on the charts.

IMO, Frankie Goes To Hollywood's "Two Tribes" IMO was good enough to not make the list. It should have been their 2nd Top 40 hit at least.

Some facts about Nolan Thomas: His real name is Marko Kalfa (born in August 1966). Nowadays, he is a fashion photographer. Get this: He didn’t even SING on, “Yo, Little Brother”, it was another BLACK singer instead, Elan Langier, who I don’t even know if he got credit for the song. Ugh. Thomas (or Kalfa) also had two other singles, even WORSE than this: a cover version of the No. 1 1971 Osmonds hit, “One Bad Apple” that made the Bubbling Under Charts at No. 105, and a track called (oh HELL no!): “Too White” LMFAO

Why did Band Aid have only Bananarama as a female representation of British artists? They had a fiew popular names that time like Annie Lennox, Alison Moyet, Kim Wilde, Bonnie Tyler, Kate Bush or Sade. Didn’t they respect gender parity or had female singers a better intuition about the song?

I was three years old when these songs were the current hits. I mean, I look at today’s “stars” in music…Jack Harlow, Doja Cat, Tate McRae, Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa…etc…I just can’t wrap my head around how there was actually a time where old ass white dudes like Peter Cetera who was the same age as I am right now, and sounds like *that*, could be one of the most in-demand pop stars on the planet.

Everything Barbra Streisand recorded throughout the 80’s sounds like the outtakes from her 1980 „Guilty” album. Say what you like about the 80’s Diana Ross but at least she tried to fit in the new trends. Barbra Streisand stayed in the safe 1980 for the whole decade.

I think it’s safe to say that 1985 was the year where adult contemporary hit its ultimate stride. That’s the only way I can explain why so many other big hits became so prominent on the charts alongside Chicago. Hell for them, they were just hitting their stride; it started in 1981, and it ultimately culminated with their biggest hit in 1985. It makes sense, though it still sucks big floppy donkey dick. Also, I distinctly remember Todd mentioning “Naughty Naughty” in his Jon Parr One Hit Wonderland episode. I remember hearing it and his commentary on it. Talk about wild!

My biggest bone to pick with Do They Know It's Christmas? is the notion that somehow, people in Ethiopia didn't know what Christmas was. I believe the official religion of Ethiopia is Ethiopian Orthodox. They may celebrate Orthodox Christmas instead, but it's still Christmas! Like, I know there was no Internet or Google back then, but there were public libraries with encyclopedias! Just cringe.

What also gets me is the fact they wrote Ethiopia in the lyrics which is so easy to sing before changing it to Africa. The frustration.

For Two Tribes, producer Trevor Horn really took over the song, as with a lot of the other songs on that album. In some ways, it isn't really even a proper Frankie Goes to Hollywood album with how little input the band had on it. It's more of a showcase for Trevor Horn's production style, which was better demonstrated on albums like ABC's Lexicon of Love.

(Kris Bluth) To be honest, "Do They Know It's Christmas?" never really bothered me that much. Yes, it's stuffed with ego and being sardonic doesn't really fit with the type of Christmas song they were trying to make, but it has a decent pulse and anyone who says they don't sing along at the end is a damned liar. I'd take it over "We Are the World" any day. That said, what the hell was it still doing in the Top Twenty at the end of January? Oh, and the video for "Call to the Heart" is worth a laugh. The love interest looks like she should be his mom.

Did FGTH's "The power of love" not make the HOT 100 or was it not released in the US? They should have let it be their single in America over Christmas like everywhere else, instead of the belatedly released "Two Tribes".

You kids with your crowdfunding and your Patreons. You have literally no idea how groundbreaking Band-aid and Live-aid actually were, giving people a way to. raise awareness and a lot of money to at least try to help other people. Yeah, it was a terrible song. Worse than I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus? I think not. Nor any of a swack of other Christmas songs released expressly to exploit emotions to make record companies money. Oh, and that Bono line? Yeah, once upon a time you could actually just tell the truth in a lyric. Yeah, dude, you are still better off in your one-bedroom apartment than pretty much any kid in Ethiopia in the 1980s. You don't have to thank God for it, but it doesn't hurt to remember it.
