The Family was one of Prince's protegés. One notable thing, they recorded the original version of "Nothing Compares 2 U".

15:55 - George Michael was certainly hot property back in 85. In that year, David Cassidy decided to make his comeback with "The Last Kiss", and its hit status was guaranteed by featuring the great Mr Michael on backing vocal duties. That's really all you needed. A morose song manufactured by Cliff Richard's songwriter and producer, the Greek God as guest vocalist, and that bloke from The Partridge Family can breathe new life!

Minor hit from 1985 that should’ve been a MUCH bigger hit (in the U.S., at least) “Kayleigh” by Marillion (No. 74 on the Billboard Hot 100)

Katrina and the Waves were a US-British band, with Katrina and Vince de la Cruz (bassist) being Americans. De la Cruz was from Texas, and wrote the song “Mexico” from their hit KATW album, so I’m not surprised there are some Spanish/Hispanic influences in the band. But I believe “Que Te Quiero” was written by the Brit, Kimberley Rew. They had a couple of other minor hits: “Do You Want Crying” (the follow-up to Sunshine, and my personal favorite) reached No. 37, and “That’s the Way” reached No. 16 in 1989. While often called a one hit wonder for “Walking on Sunshine”, the had a huge hit in the UK in the 90s; “Love Shine a Light” reached No.3, and took first place at the Eurovision Song Contest. Probably goes without saying, but I was a big fan of Katrina and the Waves, and wouldn’t put “Que Te Quiero” on a “worst” list... but to each their own, I guess.

Sun Street was the follow-up to Walking On Sunshine in the UK. And that last song was also the last time the UK won Eurovision although they came second this year thanks to Sam Ryder's song Spaceman.

Katrina and the Waves were number 1 in 1986 with "Que te quiero". We do not complain that a foreign group makes lyrics in Spanish. That complains are more of an American thing, I guess.

I actually liked the "Screams of Passion" song and can remember watching the music video for it on my parents old VHS tapes of mid-1980s music videos. I didn't really mind the "special defects" in the music video. Also, my favorite moments in this review were your "Stealth Halloween Special" moments where you talked about "Eaten Alive" and that "I Got You Babe" UB40 cover (only one of which was entertainingly over-the-top in its "so-bad-it's-good"-ness--and it wasn't the UB40 song). [That "Eaten Alive" music video, though, is distinctly reminiscent of that Island of Dr. Moreau movie from the 1930s.]

In re: Eddie Murphy, remember Little Bill in "Boogie Nights"? My buddy and I went to Remo Williams in the cinema. As we walked out, he declared, "K-Mart movie!" A third song came out of "White Nights." Lou Reed, "Love is Chemical." That's a fun one. It's not one of Lou's. Industry man Walt Aldridge wrote it.

I turned 16 that fall & we just got MTV in my little northern-Illinois town. I was glued to it for another few years, but remember ALL of these songs from watching 24-7 out of novelty & excitement at the time. “Second Wind” *almost* made me flip-the channel @ that time. That song was awful.

Saw Styx all original members just before the split and they were awesome. Saw them again a few years ago with Tommy & the rest. Still awesome. BUT they had a Dennis DeYoung impersonator for hire and did ALL those (great) songs they made fun of and grumbled about for all those years including Babe and Mr. Roboto. I love all of Styx, they were so versatile with Tommy and Dennis. But all i could think was why do Dennis’s stuff that u said sucked with some Dennis knock off instead of Dennis?

I was a hyper 8 year old at this time and recall pop music being rather "Meh!" at the time. Or at least the British charts were. A few gems like "Love and Pride" by King (pretty sure that it was from '85). I like the Madonna song (OK the lyrics were a bit silly) but the others on the list were quite crap.

I especially hated the cover of Sonny & Cher's I Got You Babe. It pissed me off and while I'm normally forgiving to UB40, I cannot let this slide. And also, I hated The Pretenders because they have such a stupid name (I mean were they pretending to be a good band? Well guess what it ain't working!) and their sound is just this generic Top 40 radio shit that they constantly play all the damn time! Chrissie Hynde's voice just puts me to sleep! I mean I would only listen to them if I want to cure my insomnia! And I was insulted by this tripe of having her sing Cher's lyrics! I mean I'm not the biggest fan of Cher but she's a much better singer than her. I will never forgive Hynde or UB40 for ruining one of my favorite 60's songs!
