Screw the critics and the clueless average moviegoer: this film blew me away in 1999 as a 14 yo and I still love it more than 20 years later; Crichton + McTiernan + European actors = epic win

My Lit class did a study on the story of Beowulf and I didn't realize the connection of this movie to the story until the teacher brought the movie to show the similarities of the events. Legends are often exaggerated and so the movie was portraying the monster Grendel being a group of cavemen wearing animal skins to become "inhuman" and the hissing woman to be "Grendel's Mother" and the army with their torches coming down the mountain was the "fire wyrm" (aka the Dragon). Kinda cool.
@taylorrhodes57334 жыл бұрын
A criminally underrated movie. Very few understand the true theme of this movie - and the evolution of the characters. They learn how to be brave in the face of what they do not see. They learn that what their imaginations tell them their demons are is often much worse than what reality is. For instance, the fog - at first, they dread it and do not believe what they see in it. They believe it brings the Wendol. By the end, they are brave enough to fight an entire army when the army is appearing out of the fog. Then, the Wendol - at first, they believe them to be monsters, demons from another world. But then realize they are not what they seem, and are able to overcome their fear and defeat their enemy. Like I said, just a super underrated movie. I loved it.

Amazing movie. And the use of latin as a a common tongue is A+ masterpiece.
@Kimmerios-l5u3 жыл бұрын
In the book it was greek that was used as common language and that was more historically accurate.It was even used in the beginning of the film by Omar Sharif.
@notfeedynotlazy3 жыл бұрын
@@Kimmerios-l5u Yep, as Greek was the defacto comertial lingua franca in most of the areas surrounding the Byzantine Empire - the area they were travelling through. It was the tongue he expected them to know. And he fell back to Latin afterwards, which was the _actual_common tongue in most of Western Europe - the area those Vikings would be from. It was the tongue they actually knew. So the switch of languages made a LOT of sense in that scene.

@EvilPaladin113 жыл бұрын
@@thenumbah1birdman The other comment made it sound like the translator tricked Ibn to go instead of himself. Though yeah, practicality wise, sending Ibn to go makes more sense. Since Ibn is younger and can recover from physical stuff quicker (though still fucked because he was a poet, rather than a soldier, or ANY physical profession (Ibn was lucky to survive the movie/book long enough to adapt, and continue to survive)).

It is Underrated movie because it showed a fare side of the history of Arabs. Ahmed bin Fadlan was fare too and wrote about the Vikings and his book still people can read today and he passed their bravery stories with fairness and honestness.

They used to crank out like 4 movies this good a year….and we just took it for granted. I think at the time this got pretty weak reviews, but I LOVED it then at 16 and still do now nearly 40!

No matter what you say about the precise historical accuracy, this film really went out of its way to convey the fundamental experience of otherness of the past - not just to us, the viewers, but also between the different cultures, in a world where so much remained terra incognita. It's very intriguing, and dare I say quite intelligent. Even the Latin is comprehensible, and a pretty good representation of how a lingua franca might have been used. Hard to believe it was panned by the critics.

An epic scene in an epic movie. German is my Muttersprache (mother language), and I have also learned English since I was very young (my father was an American soldier stationed in Germany). I also studied both Latin and Greek as a teenager, and have spent a fair amount of time in Norway and Sweden. It was actually an amusing experience to see this movie with my American friends, because they gave me weird looks when I was able to translate every single language spoken in the first 15 minutes. The 13th Warrior is literally a complete test of almost my entire linguistic skill set (I also speak Brazilian Portuguese).

Well, the language spoken in the film is actually Norwegian! And not Old Norse, but to the film's credit all the actors knew Norwegian! And Old Norse would've taken way to long to learn correctly. So even though it not actual Old Norse, Norwegian/Swedish/Dutch/Danish/Icelandic are the modern descendants of Old Norse so its good in my book :)

Most people also do not catch that when Banderas says to try Greek the Northman is speaking Latin LOL
