I think you might be misinformed about what Magnus said. He said it’s unlikely that he will play the match again if Alireza didn’t win the candidates. A lot of people didn’t want Nepo to win because of how the last match went and they thought it was unlikely for him to play because he already beat him, but I don’t think him not playing has anything to do with any of the other players or how that last match went. It was about 6 months ago and he hasn’t really spoken about it since. Hopefully he has changed his mind about it

I’m a similar rating to NL, slightly lower, I also don’t know much opening theory. I know the general set ups and ideas of the positions of the openings I play but don’t memorize lines. As long as you avoid the super sharp openings where there’s some wild line you need to know theory to not lose in, you’re totally fine at that level

i feel like northernlion doesn’t understand that 1. magnus would probably still play nepo, if the prize was higher and 2. magnus isn’t “neglecting his job as world champion”, he is potentially giving up his title, which would in turn make the title much less prestigious.

Sorry, why would Nepomniachtchi winning the title make it less prestigious? He seems to be a quite accomplished player. Unless you mean that Carlsen personally would lose prestige if he failed to defend his title, which is like... yeah, that's how the title works, you have to defend it every two years or else you lose it.

@@imperiallarch7610 well usually it is a given that you defend the title unless you are retiring so someone as good as magnus choosing to do so will mean, assuming nepo wins, that for as long as he is champion people would point out that he never beat magnus thereby making people place less importance in the title. It has nothing to do with my opinion on Ian as a player, simply about how most people would view something like this if that makes sense. Also, rereading your comment, it’s not about nepo winning the title, it’s about him winning the title without beating magnus
