Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz (May he rest in peace) was a teacher, philosopher, social critic and prolific author who has been hailed by Time magazine as a "once-in-a-millennium scholar." His lifelong work in Jewish education earned him the Israel Prize, his country’s highest honor.
Born in Jerusalem in 1937 to secular parents, Rabbi Even-Israel Steinsaltz studied physics and chemistry at the Hebrew University. Following graduation, he established several experimental schools and, at the age of 24, became Israel’s youngest school principal.
In 1965, he began his monumental Hebrew translation and commentary on the Talmud. To date, he has published 38 of the anticipated 46 volumes. The Rabbi’s classic work of Kabbalah, The Thirteen Petalled Rose, was first published in 1980 and now appears in eight languages. In all, Rabbi Even-Yisrael Steinsaltz has authored some 60 books and hundreds of articles on subjects ranging from zoology to theology to social commentary.
Continuing his work as a teacher and spiritual mentor, Rabbi Even-Israel Steinsaltz established a network of schools and educational institutions in Israel and the former Soviet Union. He has served as scholar in residence at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Studies in Washington, D.C. and the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton University. His honorary degrees included doctorates from Yeshiva University, Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Bar Ilan University, Brandeis University, and Florida International University.
He passed away in Jerusalem in 2020 at the age of 83. May his memory be a blessing.

Here in Brazil especially, the number of b'nei and banot anussim is probably much higher than in other Latin countries. Hi. Yes. I believe I'm one of those descendants. I could be wrong. Or it might not be fully matrilineal (because who knows, the Inquisition made it impossible to be openly Jewish for more than 500 years) but we kept names from grandparents to grandchildren and married between our own (which is easy in an area in the mountains of Puerto Rico where most of the population was Taíno, although at least an aunt of mine had a daughter with a very dark sinned Taíno looking man, and she had a daughter). Anyways, one particular thing they did was to tell the children at 13 years of age that we're Jewish and that means that before Spain we came from Jerusalem and that if I forget Jerusalem may my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth and that was something that we could not tell to the children in the family. I know, it's really weird. We're the Medina, Miranda, Villafañe and Ongay families of Utuado, Puerto Rico. None of those sound Jewish to me, except maybe Medina but that also sounds very Arabic. And ask almost any Puerto Rican, especially from the mountains, they have a similar story with Jews and almost no one throws away the bread but feed it to the birds. Some Puerto Ricans called Espiritistas fast from food an water for one full day in Autumn, according to a specific moon and sun. There's also many traditions of throwing sins in the water.
