The Plymouth Suburban was a bargain, Since the higher level MoPar wagons were the same exact body. GM would later do this on their 1971+ full sized wagons.

One of our fine KZbin commentators, indeed one “bpatterson1846,” lets loose with the tragic tale of his grandmother’s fatal heart attack in the backseat of the family’s new Plymouth station wagon. The smell of the deceased’s flatulence could not be removed, according to “patterson,” and a new Plymouth convertible for which the family then apparently traded was driven to the funeral. The Plymouth automobile, a one-time member of the “low priced three,”was Chrysler’s entry into the price category and the automobile competed with the Chevrolet automobile and the Ford automobile, entries of General Motors and the Ford Motor Company, respectively. General Motors (known as GM) was a conglomeration of several makes of automobiles, including the Chevrolet (known often as Chevy), Pontiac, Oldsmobile (sometimes known as Olds), Buick, and Cadillac. The Ford Motor Company, makers of the Ford automobile, the Mercury automobile, and the Lincoln automobile, was named after Mr. Henry Ford of Detroit, Michigan who pioneered the assembly line method of automobile manufacturing.

I'm amused that the "selling points" included the medallions on the fins, and the script treatment of the word "Plymouth" which had been moved to the left side of the wagon's tailgate. And the stainless steel or chrome lines on the sides.

If you wanted 3-point seat belts back then you had to buy a Volvo - standard from '59. Other car makers would tell you just to hang on in a crash and not to bump your head on the metal dash before you flew through the windshield!

Only a few American cars came with standard seat belts. The law that you have to weae them wasn't complete until something like the late 80's or 90's. It was in like the 70's that all cars started to comr with them

Believe it or not, Americans did NOT want to hear about safety and were actually turned off by such features back then. It was more of a Titanic mentality - these cars are big so are definitely safe.

Grandma shit herself while having her heart attack in the back of Dad's new '59 Sport Suburban. A couple days later we drove a brand new Fury Convertible to her funeral. We could not get the smell out of the back of that station wagon no matter how hard we scrubbed so Dad traded it in.
