TLDR: I love the passion and the idea behind what Matty did at their performance in Malaysia, but especially in places where the government is so anti-LGBTQ+ we need to be aware of what will actually make a difference. I absolutely agree that the discrimination and hate should be called out but ultimately this outburst will probably not do much for the community it’s supposed to be for (at least not in the near future).

Hey! Just wanted to jump in here because I saw someone say that I deleted their comment and I wanted to clarify that this is my first time checking up on this video since posting so I haven't even seen comments! I can see the notification of the comments but for some reason they're not showing up on the actual video so I have no way to reply but if this happens to you please know I'm not intentionally deleting or ignoring the comment, KZbin is just being KZbin. I for sure don't want to make it seem like I'm deleting comments randomly, this is an open space for conversation :) ((also if that person happens to see this, I agree Matty was disrespectful to fans, that was a large part of what I talked about. Listen to the actual video before responding as if I didn't see what happened!!))

Malaysian here. I think Matty is bad representation for the community in Malaysia. Why? Here’s my points (without relating with religion views & government) : 1. PDA & drunk in public is against general moral values here & it’s even worse when there’s underage audience presence. 2. Boldness when speak up it’s acceptable but when the speech mixed with harsh words, it’s against general local moral values. 3. Malaysian behave more polite in daily life & less aggressive compared westerners/middle easterners. When he showed aggressions, vandalised drone & swearing using harsh words, he just against how local behave & general local moral values. 4. Most Malaysian likely to choose professional ways to take any actions that don’t create disharmony in publics like shouting in the face or making noise in public. This Malaysians preference clearly shows that Matty actions is far opposite than locals way.

Mostly your response is accurate …except for the fact is that Matty is a performance artist, he pretends drunk…prove he was drinking alcohol. I wonder if the fans understand “Performance Art”? If not, then they will not understand Matty.

@@janesexton7942 in Malaysia, there’s “common scene/visual” & “inappropriate scene/visual” in term of moral judgement across art & entertainments. “Inappropriate scene/visual” throughout art & entertainments must begin/comes with A REMINDER. So, underage audiences or children will stay reminded to prevent them not to imitate inappropriate behavior. Gimmicks or “bad marketing” is not a commendable action here.

FYI , the law that makes gay illegal in Malaysia is inherited from the BRITISH law; we are part of the commonwealth.

I really think you covered a lot of sides in this and thought you did a great job! I really resonated with your statement that there is almost no right answer. It’s a very nuanced and complicated incident. As a fan of 10 years, 2023 has been a hard year for fans!

I'm gay and British Indian, and I'm pretty pissed off at what Matty Healy did. He just didnt think of the impact he would actually have. And then with the power of a western passport he flies away and leaves everyone else to face the consequences. If it was me I would've done the concert without PDA and then given the money to lgbt adjacent charities and orgs. Well if it was me I wouldn't have performed there at all, cos I wouldn't feel safe as an openly gay guy lol But him saying he didn't know the legal situation in Malaysia? That's what really made me angry. Literally one google search. Where is the critical thinking?

i don’t think matty realizes how privileged he is as a straight white british man to pull this stunt. for him a public kiss with a man is funny or a stance. for everyone in that audience it’s jail, conversion therapy, being beaten, disowned. feels like matty just wanted to be like “look at this crazy thing i can do” while thousands of queer malaysians could only dream of being so free

Well, in my humble and lgbt supporting opinion, i dont agree with matt. I dont think that descriminating is good and that is why i dont practice it, but, that is what i believe in and i can't expect everyone to be the same, its not even realistic. I don't go in my friend's house and tell his family that their house is a mess... Its unfair, but it is not our battle to fight. This is a change that comes from inside and with time, so for an outsider to come and disrespect their customs and beliefs is incorrect in my eyes. Plus that's not really helping the lgbt people living there... Since this has religious origins its alot more complicated then they dont like gay people. It's their religion, you cant just go there and shit on their religion, and hope they just stand there and agree. Im really surprised they werent arrested

hello, this is coming from a perspective of Malay/Malaysian person who've been raise and lives here, for me who is also a muslim, im sorry in advance if i hurt anyone feeling here cuz im gonna be a bit brutally honest since its the internet. So i want to clear up some misunderstanding as to what the law say or do here, the lgbtq+ remark thing is real and true. The law of people can get jailed for being homo and etc is true, but to a certain extent. Ofc we have that law but also have human right law which is the right to live as a normal human being who wake up in the morning, go to school or work, after that relax with the fam or play games with the boys, go to sleep and rinse and repeat that. For me as a muslim, i have multiple friends who are gay and etc but im friends with not because there rich, handsome/pretty, gay and etc, we share the same religion and we're the same race or even we go to same school or smth. Im friends with them because i wanted to and thats it. They're my friends because we hangout with each other, i troll them they troll me back. Basically what a normal person have a friendship relationship. THATS IT nothing complicated. Even though im a muslim and in my belief that being gay or be apart of the lgbtq+ community is wrong, i couldnt care less about your belief in them because its your life not mine. Also to my gay friends, dont worry they havent been doxed by the goverment because they're not stupid like Matty Healy who apparently cant read a simple contract or do some minimal amount of research. One thing about us Malaysian, we dont even do that shit in public. To more specific indecent conduct which is kissing in public. Not just married muslim couple, even non-muslim couple dont do that shit because its embarrassing to do it in public. So i hope this clears up any misunderstanding about my own country Malaysia that we hated gay people for some reason, its only the government due to the muslim way of us running our country because of the history that we have with sultan(muslim kings). Also for a piece of advice "When in Rome, do it the same as the Romans" if you have any question pls just reply and i'll clear up any misunderstanding, also i dont want to argue with anyone and i just want to have a peaceful interaction with other people :) (ps: english is not my first language so there might be a lot of typo :p)

1st of all let’s lay the blame on an extremely repressive regime who are successfully defecting blame on to someone else. Then reflect upon the 1975 track record, who decided it was a good idea to invite them to this festival? Their songs are about drugs, sex, love etc, you just need two minutes on KZbin to check that out, ffs. Their manager may have said they would abide by the “rules “, did he actually communicate that to the band? We don’t know. Matty is getting all the flack for this, when it’s quite obvious that the whole band agreed upon this. Ross walked over the stage to him for the kiss. Also if they had not attended the festival, and put out a statement to that effect, nobody would have taken any notice. The action they have taken has given the issue worldwide attention, for good or bad. Whatever you may think of them, they have you talking about it. You can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs. As for saying there were no consequences to them, they could have been arrested, which they obviously knew, as it was Matty and Ross kissing, the two single members of the band. They chose not to put George or Adam at risk. Personally I think they are brave but a bit foolish, I think it was a bit impulsive and perhaps not well thought out, but I have the benefit of hindsight. I absolutely believe that it was done with the best of intentions.

Playing into the hand of that extremely repressive regime by giving them the perfect brush to paint the local LGBTQ community as a largely Western influenced, reckless, selfish, uncouth bunch should be the focus here. It's pointless to blame the Malaysian government, that they are an oppressive regime that should be thwarted doesn't need to be pointed out by Capt. Obvious white savior wannabe. The locals know, they've experienced it probably have the scars to show for it. He has painted an even bigger target on them and what progress has been made probably has been undone. Queer Malaysians have already pointed this out, listen to them. Do not be like Matty Healy.

The band signed a letter saying nothing against the Malaysian culture by defying it he can be sued. The government is liberal however the majority of the country is conservative they need to balance things to everything but what this band did set everything this liberal government trying to do back.

If this rule was applied consistently then no foreign artist would be able to perform in the USA. Because they would have to spend 2 hours talking about humnan rights abuses being commited by and in the United States.

2:55 copy & paste because i can't articulate well because of my poor english. the 1975, agreed with the organizers to attend despite the local organizers having clearly stated their cultural sensitivities. The organizers and 1975 came to an agreement, where the band ACKNOWLEDGED and AGREED to be a part of. Matt and his band then came to perform on the first day, and not long after, went on a drunken rampage on stage with profanity, and he strongly criticised the Malaysian government and the government's decision to abide by religious and cultural sensitivities on stage. And he kissed his band male member on stage as a sign of defiance. The repercussions were that, the local government who had no issues with their presence here, and had not imposed any other sudden unjust regulations, or restrictions whatsoever to their performance as long as they abided by our laws - had to retaliate to Matt's actions by shutting down the 3-day festival to take a firm stand.

Not only that, maybe asking why attendees of the event at least, why we happen to be pissed at em. N not only that, but the whole context which was failed to be presented by Matty,vs wat we include n refuse to include in a raw clip by who was there and agreed as how we see it as such. It’s not only the organisers tat begged to allow them to be performing when they were banned in the first place, but it was the 1975’s management who also did, n not only verbally but also where they even signed, as how matty failed to also explained to who wasn’t even there, were actually involved, despite it behind closed doors, but it may be between responsible parties who signed n understood it, but also when what the population expect foreigners to at least adhere to our beliefs, where we didn’t even collectively commented about him doing a homo act was the reason why his intention n opinions were the issue in the first place.how he presented it to us was the problem, not how he intent it to be, regardless it be good or bad when the consequences weren’t his or even who was also responsible and agreed to take accountability yet ran away with the gov being blamed and the organisers as well when they knew this would happen but compromised with the least condition of, act respectfully yet they had to spin it being the whole country pissed just cuz we have bigoted laws that we agree to, as how he sees it as.

Like if it wasn’t at least that he only gave what he wants the world to see what happened, if he actually did explain n give the whole context of what happened at least, you d find some of us supporting his actions n beliefs, not what his beliefs only, but inconsiderate actions were wat lead to this in the first place. If he was actually the victim in the first place, how come other foreign artists who were there n known to also be lgbt friendly wasn’t even supporting yet even understood why the festival had to be cancelled anyways despite it being planned n worked for months? I’m pretty sure they were collectively briefed on what shud be allowed n not before going up there to do their performance.

For your information before 1975 come here , 2 government parties in Malaysia argue either their allow western or foreign make concert here . After being given a chance , he make that stupid action, Now their even consider to ban foreign concert to come here again. You guys have to realize Malaysia is Muslim country western culture already have bad reputation in Malaysia if Malaysia government take this thing seriously , the artist already being stone to dead by shariah law . Btw he should be thankfull to the government for asking those guy to leave immediately because many people are planning to jump and hurt 1975 group after the concert .lastly , people who probably gay in Malaysia gonna have hard time live their life after that , thanks for his action . (Sorry for my broken English)

What do you mean, did you think they would just stand and watch? Just banning them from the country and stopping their show? The next one would come right after... They needed to set an example, to show the reprecurssions of their actions, to show that their disrespect doesn't only affect them... It's sad, but it's the logical thing to do. The fault is entirely theirs.
