I mean 1999 was different time period for black music on TV . You had real people going through real shit. Nowadays everything seems so fake. Not authentic anymore you really see the pain in music the grind. It not really a accomplishment anymore if anything we live in a fantasy world.

😮 WOW!! My first time seeing this AWARD show but what KIRK FRANKLIN said is TRUE and RESONATES with me!! I LOVE IT!! “WE WRITE SONGS THAT DEGRADE WOMEN AND THEN WE THANK GOD FOR IT”!! I was just explaining that to my 13 year old son (whom said he wants to be a PRODUCER of MUSIC) 2 nights ago in another since. I PLAYED that GOSPEL SONG BY HEZEKIAH WALKER “GOD FAVORED ME” and told him to listen closely to the CHORUS “I WON’T HURT YOU WITH WORDS FROMMY MOUTH” 😊❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🙏🏽

I think black award shows were much more authentic, real, more about real talent and very classic back in 1999 as well as during the decade of the '90s than today. This Essence Award Show from 1999 bring back some great memories for me especially seeing Jada Pinkett Smith and Jamie Foxx hosting the show and artists like Lauryn Hill, Faith Evans, Kelly Price, Mariah Carey were more about originality and performance not about the number of awards they won. Even some of the commercials were better like the Revlon commercial Halle Berry was in and seeing this young girl talking about kids who were suffering from AIDS as well as how she was dealing with the disease herself was so moving and down to earth. Chris Rock demonstrated a great act of compassion by giving that little girl's mother his Essence Award and said she deserved it more than him. Now how many celebrities would have done that at an average awards show today. Even though things are more crazy and insane in this country and the world now than in 1999 at least there was more concern and compassion for fellow human beings even though there were issues and problems between people's and nations back in the '90s. Listening to renowned actor Avery Brooks talk about how the youth could be the hope for the new millennium, now that we are 23 years into the new millennium as well as the 21st century we are still commiting the same foolish and idiotic mistakes, showing the same ignorance, arrogance, indifference, acts of systemic racism, bigotry, greed, corrupt power hungry people using power as a means to dominate and rule other people because what their address is and who they happen to be which makes the 21st century look almost like the 20th.
