As a lifetime street skater I've been seriously trying to skate more transition as I age and this is my exact problem when I do axle stalls or grinds. I'm always on the inside still and never on top. Finally someone made a video to help with this issue. Thank You!

Hip pads also help a ton. The trick for some of us is finding ones that actually have padding in the right spot. It was a little tricky for me as I don't have a flat ass. Tried a skate specific pad first and it was no bueno. Ended up finding some football pads that were perfect though. They also have tailbone padding. Went front being screwed for 2+ days any time I feel on my hip to completely shrugging it off like I was still 15.

Coming back in was real weird and hard to unlock when I started skating. I finally did what you mention here - used a small ramp (I built a 2’ micro quarter just for this) and built up the courage to get it. On that tiny ramp I aimed to get my first drop in attempts to 45 degree angle rather than getting to full 90 degrees. It was easier than I thought and I discovered quickly that once I had that motion understood, I could easily go to a full 90 degree straight drop in. And once I had that I was suddenly able to do 50-50 grinds too - it opened up a lot of new variations!

If you watch the video back Chad you're never stood up straight. It definitely helps with locking the trucks into the correct position if you lean slightly into the ramp(personally). I find that when you stand up vertically it locks toe side if you very slightly lean in, locking into heel side happens more easily.

super helpful! I've been skating for 10 years and I'm still terrified of coping, or the height of the coping. I think also I struggle with this trick as I'm naturally more on my toes when I skate. gonna try these tips later today, hopefully get my weight more onto my heels and on top of the coping. I have a friend who does these with his back truck fully pushed into the coping, not hanging off at all, and then he drops in. don't know how he does it but I've never seen him hang up. it's all in the belief!

Nice! I’ve struggled with this, But its really a mental thing. I’ve always strayed away from transition just due to fear of getting absolutely destroyed on a 3-4 foot quarter pipe lol, But I’ve been getting more comfortable on transition lately! For some reason 5-0 stalls are easier then getting into 50-50, Problem is I’m doing what your describing by going at it wide instead of straight on. I’m gonna try these methods next time I’m out!

backside 5050 axle stall was the first thing i learned on my quarter pipe. i still cant rock to fakie but axle stalls all day. getting the correct speed and transferring your weight up to the edge of the ramp. as a beginner speed was probably the most important part, make sure you have enough speed to get up to the top of the ramp without flying up there. i just learned my first transition trick this last month with a 2ft quarterpipe i built, and was able to learn and transfer my skills to my local skate parks 3ft and 5ft quarter pipes. also was able to grind some jersey barrier transition at my local but havent been able to ride out of that steep transition at the bottom.

@ChadCaruso - For me it's not the fear of the coping, it's locking the back truck in - which is the lack of speed I need to to so. So my problem is a lack of pumping at the base of the ramp. My later video @rekallism shows that. Without the lock, then pulling the shoulders back, I'm getting stuck. I'll get it.

I personally never recommend sliding your back truck back down. I recommend learning how to turn in properly. With the right pressure on your toes on the back foot, you can turn in fine and even do what I call edgers where the back wheels come over the coping and you ride on the edge of one wheel and come back in. The muscles for using your heel or toes needs to be developed. It can be practiced quite safely under the coping.

Fear is MASSIVE My tip for beginners is walk before you run 1. Find the most MELLOW bank and try to 50-50 stall consistently at the top of the bank 2. Once you got mellow banks then start trying them on progressively steeper banks until you are comfortable doing a 50-50 stall on the biggest banks in the park By this time you should have the muscle memory subconsciously drilled into your brain & now you're ready for step 3. 3. Find the most MELLOW quarter pipe that you can possibly find. The more mellow the BETTER. Practice step 2 over & over on the quarter pipe & watch videos that show you how to properly lock in to the stall. If you're lucky & you have extremely mellow quarter pipes then the learning curve wont be too bad If you only have access to massive or steep quarters then fear of falling might hold you back for a while {BONUS TIP} => Locking in correctly is all about repetition & FEEL. Some people find it easier to lock straight into a BS feeble stall. Which is absolutely fine... It helps build confidence up on the coping. 4. Once you have proper technique on mellow quarters then take it to progressively bigger & steeper quarters. OPTIONAL STEP #5. Do it all again from the start but switch
