I have Talens gouache from 1981 that is still working, out of nearly forty colours only one did not survive! They are a good company that understands pigment and their product err on there side of being better than average for whatever range. I used their student oils alongside their professional colours, those also have been great, none of the work done with them has degraded in any way. I have every confidence these Van Goghs will give excellent results. Professional ranges cater to some sophisticated demands drom artists, these are more than sufficient for att but the most discerning, better to learn with an excellent student tangle and upgrade slowly. These knock most of the competition out of the water!
@AllanJayQuesada4 жыл бұрын
I certainly agree.. that is why i am both instinctively and confidently recommending this line and actually putting VanGogh on top of the student grade race. Royal talens is serious jn their craft, and that matters to me alot. I am always fascinated and satisfied hearing stories of paints and artworks that last. So im happy to hear about your set that's from 1981! That's amazing and theyre collectibles now for sure. Do these gouache paints still the same as the Gouache they offer now or maybe theyve added more colors and variants.. Thank you for sharing.

Such a lovely and thorough review. Van Gogh are really some of the best student grade watercolours. I always recommend them next to the Schmincke Akademie to people wanting to try out watercolours. You are right about the duplicates in the Cotman big set. They add one more white, black, ochre,, lemon yellow, and some others I don't remember because I've reorganised my set and it's been quite a while since I first used them. But I believe there's one more red and blue, but don't quote me on that. Anyway, very enjoyable review, cheers! :D

Interesting that you should be reviewing these new VanGogh paints just now. Last week another YTer, Mandy VanGooije compared her well loved and oft used VanGogh paint with her Rembrants. She compared the colors that LOOK the same between the lines (might not be the same pigments). Interestingly, results weren't hugely dissimilar although there were differences ! She did not yet have access to the new colors, so this dovetails wonderfully with her program. By the way, I really enjoy your reviews. Your sample paintings are amazing and I like the ' closer look' comparisons/comments you conclude your reviews with.

@PaintinHiding4 жыл бұрын
the cotman 45 pan set is still just 40 colours, and the other 5 are duplicates. (ie, 2 half pans of ultramarine, etc). the van gogh rose colour doesn't contain white but it does have an opaque filler. (rembrandt has the same ROSE colour but is PR122/PW6, interesting how royal talens decided that.) and the TURQUOISE GREEN, i agree with you! how is it only PB15, and PB29? but then i remember watching your swatching of Shinhan PWC marine blue, that one was made with PB15:3 and looked very green. so maybe royal talens processed the pigment similar to shinihan pwc's marine blue and then added a bit of PB29. i'm just guessing. i kinda wish you could do a full range swatching of the vangogh like how you did with the shinhan, and then go through how which vangogh colours could be cheaper alternatives to which artist grade colours. (like how you said dusk violet is similar to moonglow). dickblick has vangogh dot card i believe. once again, thank you so much for a great review! i also love using the van gogh paints :D
@AllanJayQuesada4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Paint in Hiding for the rich reply. VanGogh rose with no white Pigment but a filler makes its cheaper than what Rembrandt did for adding pw6.. it's weird that they seemed to do it to match the pastelness of the student grade. I am impressed by your observations for the PWC swatching. Haha. Their pb15:3 was really green it looks like pb16 or even greener. But i think, the Turquioise green of vangogh still looks alot greener, and lighter, like pb29 was mixed with pg18 plus an opaque filler. But yes, ill have this as a homework to do. Surely, this isn't an error because they've put it in their website, brochure and tube covers. But ill still ask them. Yes, i really want to try all the colors out, even rembrandt. I wish though dickblick could ship to Philippines, but they cant. I was about to place my order months back for an Utrecht set only to find out they dont ship to PH at that time, atleast. 😔

The turquoise green reminds me a bit of Daniel Smith's 'Cobalt Teal Blue' because, as the name suggests, it would be used as a blue but in fact the pigment name given in the description is 'PG50', so a green pigment. But as PB29 is usually Ultramarine and PB15 is usually Phthalo Blue, I think your suspicions might be correct!

@cristyazzurra27024 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for this video Allan that's been really helpful! I have some of these colors and my favorites are the dusk colors. I don't like Rose... indeed it's strangely opaque and its Rembrandt version does also contain a white pigment so it's weird to think that the Van Gogh version is a single Pr122 so opaque. The turquoise green is another mystery... I have the half pan and is really weak can't compare with the vibrant one in tube you swatched. And it's granulating... slightly but granulating so I thought it has some Pb29!?? Generally I love Van Gogh and honestly I prefer it rather than Lukas which has been such a disappointment as it is supposed to be artist grade and it's quite more expensive. Lukas is indeed the worst brand I have tried so far. Love your sample painting, they always bring to life such beautiful scenes and make the paints perform better than one would imagine.
@jenneke97634 жыл бұрын
I discovered this terrific channel while searching for info about Lukas 1862 tubes (Their professional line). They don't seem to be that well known and opinions are split with some folks really liking them. I use a combination of D.Smith, M.Graham, W&N Pro and Davinci tube paint that I usually squeeze into pans and allow to dry. BTW, I find the Davinci just doesn't get the kudos it should-it's fantastic paint but my most local art store no longer carries it. In Canada, wc paint is REALLY pricey and so when I saw I could get Lukas 24 ml tubes from a Cdn source for less than 5 ml of DS or W&N @ eg. Michaels...I wondered if I should replenish/try out some of their line. I'm most curious about their Gamboge, Naples Yellow, Cobalt Violet, Cobalt Green and Viridian. Do you have experience with any of them, Cristy?
@cristyazzurra27024 жыл бұрын
jenneke hi! I can imagine that watercolor paints are quite pricey and Lukas huge tubes are definitely more budget friendly. I bought full pans of the primaries, a couple of reds a couple of blues, phtalo green and pyrrole orange which is my favorite so far. I don’t have the colours you would like to get but I am not happy with my Lukas 1862. They do perform well and when you layer a few times they are vibrant also they are not super staining as other brands but I find they are too opaque and less lively and a bit different than other professional lines so to me they look more like a student line. Here in Italy the Lukas are quite popular ( and pricey ) and I guess I had too many expectations, also some people might prefer these paints exactly for their particular characteristics. I guess these paints are the kind you love or hate 😄 but well, getting a deal on tubes is indeed tempting. Maybe you will love them 🍀
@AllanJayQuesada4 жыл бұрын
yeah, i agree, the lucas paints are more on the opaque side.. the first time used them, I was happy because i had less sets to compare them with, but now, it is falling behind the game. yeah, the turquoise green was really weird but its beautiful from the pan. what i was suspecting was it has PG18 which is a granulating viridian. and it really has pb29 in it too.

@moma-b3 жыл бұрын
@@marjoriejohnson6535 I think that's a misconception, opaque colors are not gouache. But I like to decide when do I wish to add the white. So I wish they didn't "improve" it that way. 😐
@AllanJayQuesada3 жыл бұрын
adding a white is not an improvement as it is always preferred that there is just a single pigment in a color. azo yellow in general is known as a transparent color with PY150 as the pigment. an addition of white makes it opaque and takes away the sense of the color name. that is a weird move for Royal Talens.. :(

Until recently, it was not written that they are for professional artists and as they were bought by the Germans, VG and Rembrant series on VG writes that they are for professional artists and AP does not have to be a barrier for student-type colors, for example Fabriano Artistico 300gr100% cotton was once valid for one of the better papers but now it's rubbish due to commercialization and i don't think any serious artist is working on it, 100% cotton even big weights are not a sure sign for professional paper, Cezanne + Van Gogh perfect combination, half the picture I covered with cardboard and exhibited direct sun-without any changes. Just don’t take Van Gogh which is made in China, the difference is hugeaaaaaa.

You're right! Hahnemuhle makes some of the best papers! I just got the Hahnemuhle Dessin and I'm blown away from both the quality,and performance! The feel of the pencil drawing on that paper,is out of this world! It feels and looks very smooth,however the surface acts like sandpaper,holding the pigments like no other paper I've tried!

Of all the artist named watercolors..Rembrandt, Turner, davinci, van Gogh-- I like the van Gogh the least and davinci the best. After swatching and painting with them all the da Vinci are most pigmented , does the best washes, granulates when supposed to, moves but not " out of control".
@AllanJayQuesada3 жыл бұрын
I have some DaVinci paints. I have not reviewed them yet but have used them 2 years now, so I can relate when you say they're really good. I have not however tried Turner. How is Turner compared to Rembrandt?
@marjoriejohnson65353 жыл бұрын
Turner have a goopy thick but not thick with pigment feel. Like adding flour to gravy...of the 2 I perfer Rembrandt ..Rembrandt compared to da Vinci is low on pigment. Doesnt do as easy a wash..with a synthetic brush it tends to streak...like it only marginally better with isabey kolinsky. Didn't work very long with either. At my age minutes count and i dont want to suffer thru bad paint. I have bought some really cheap paint ..has a stylized A on the box and frankly with enough washes I can get just as good results if not better than Rembrandt or turner...and i paid under 20 plus s/ h ...amazon....ridiculous!!!!)?

The 45 set of cotman has 5 duplicate colours in colours they think you will need more of. It's not a great selection of duplicates IMO 😂

Ooohh, i see. So that confirms my 2nd theory. Thank you for giving the confirmation. They shouldve left it 40, cause it's already a big set so assuming what people would consider important may be unsafe.🙏🏻😉🎨

You are not compatible to compare colors, after all the best picture is done with Van Gogh colors, I use Schmincke and Rembrant and it all depends on which direction it is, for impressionists Rembrant and Schmincke are definitely the best colors, hyperrealism can be done and with student paints, I have worked with VG watercolors for a long time and I can freely say that no student lines and even Schmincke's can stand on their line, VGs are artistic colors, they are very intense and you can make a great picture, of course he knows, the one who doesn't know neither Schmincke nor Daniel Smith will help him. The pedestal is traditional watercolorists who do not use white cover or Chinese white paint, and the titanium buff serves for special effects in watercolor, the white color is mostly used by Joseph Zbukvic.
@AllanJayQuesada2 жыл бұрын
Yes, indeed. I put VanGogh paints above all student grades and even better to some "artist grades" out there.
@milosmihajlovic18672 жыл бұрын
@@AllanJayQuesada It's all marketing, Van Gogh are high-quality colors, in terms of price-quality they are definitely the best colors on the market, all colors at Artist's level behave differently and even the same colors differ even though they have the same pigments inside, watercolor is a game of strategy and creations, and whoever manages to control chance becomes a master.
