Just a heads up, those LEDs headlights actually DO stay on as DRL normally but there is a setting to turn that off under "Exterior Lighting" menu in the MMI. Someone must have just turned that option off on this car. I believe the S5 was also the first non-R8 with LED DRL since it came out shortly before the A5 was released.

The key fob slot in the dash was used if the car didn't have the keyless/proximity option. You inserted the fob in that slot and then started the car with the start/stop button (or pushed the fob in to start the car, I can't remember). When you did that, the fob would remain locked in the slot until the car was turned off. Then you'd pop it back out.
@selitysvideo

And some Audi's that time didn't have the start/stop button at all. Then you put the key to the slot and pushed it a bit to start the engine.
@zacharybuckley6478

False. If the car did not have the keyless option, you push the key into the slot with your foot on the brake and it starts the engine, cars without keyless/proximity do not have a start button. Cars with the keyless can be started with key in pocket and push button, or by being placed in the slot and pushed.

My BMW E92 335i had the same system. It can be started by pressing the button regardless if the key is in the slot or not. If it is inserted it remains locked in there until the car is off. But my gf had a same year 328i which also had push button start but the key had to be in the slot for it to start so it gets me when i have to drive her car.

I've been lucky enough to recently buy a 2008 S5, and I must say it's fantastic. One thing that cannot be overstated is how good they sound. Loud but not obnoxious, everyone smiles when they see the car. It's also great to have fun at low speeds and mountain climbs, although you will be hitting the speed limit sooner than what you might think. On mine the clutch feels a little more rubbery than on previous S4s or what Doug says, but might be the car. That said, you need to be ready to keep refueling the car constantly 😅 I would definitely recommend if you can keep it running. In Europe you can get one for 14-18k depending on the condition and in the UK they are quite a bit cheaper.

Audi made a lot of stuff as options, including LED Taillights, which this S5 does not have. There is a 'normal' sunroof aswell, but I think it was only in the 4-door 'sportback' version of the S5. You could get heated rear seats, blind-spot monitor, lane keep Assist and many more things. Even the Infotainment system came out in a few different versions. The High-End one had better resolution screen, more settings, CD-Changer in the back of the car + DVD "Audi Multimedia" in the center console, bluetooth and B&O Audio system.

This one is the MMI 3G, the one you're talking about is the infotainment I have in my car, MMI 3G+ with joystick in the large center button, better resolution screen, Audi Multimedia unit with double SD card slot and jukebox, coupled to a 14-speaker (or 13 speaker + sub) Bang and Olufsen sound system. how has maintenance been? i’m looking at a 2012 s5 with 82k for 15k
@poetnumbrr8
@poetnumbrr8 Жыл бұрын
@@ncofnco Decent price, at that year they are much more reliable than the first iteration (08). The intake manifold in particular was a large issue for me towards the end of my ownership (around 175k miles) but any S5 past the 2008 mark doesnt seem to have that same issue since they upgraded the manifold. I bought mine at 72k miles and drove it to 176k. Maintenence: - Thermostat (usually goes out every 80k miles) - Starter (every 80k or so miles) ^These two parts alone, are a lot of labor cost because Audi decided to place them in the most awkward spots in the 4.2 engine. - Sparks / Coils - Carbon Clean, the 4.2 V8 is direct injection so it builds up carbon overtime. At the mileage you're looking at, considering none of the previous owners carbon cleaned it you would have to do that very soon. Its relatively cheap at around $800 + labor considering they literally take apart the engine. One thing to note, this engine NEEDS to breathe, so you have to redline it alot to not build up carbon (no complaints since it sounds amazing lol) - Fuel injectors (i never had to replace mine but depends) - Coolant plastic housing (the piece that you can open to add coolant into) always cracks and brakes after some time. - Coolant hoses - Serpentine belt (mine snapped at around 140k) This is not the same as a timing belt and not anywhere near the same cost, so no biggie. - CONTROL ARMS. These are easily the biggest and most frequent expense. Its a very heavy front ended car so the control arm ball joints tend to wear, and they are not worth repairing so you just replace it with new control arm. That typically for all 4 control arms will cost you anywhere from 1-2k per job.

i've comment before about this car here in this channel. I drove and serviced one back in 2019 and the car has a great presence! low and wide with great lines,video doesn't do it justice! All factory,manual transmition,black colour with brown leather with 72.000km on the clock(around 45.000mp) Great car! what stood out to me was the suspension! The car just ate every bamp and imperfection on the road and the car was steady rock!

I had an 09 S5 with the tiptronic automatic. It didn't have the push-button keyless start, and to start it, you put your key in that slot in the dash and push it in with your foot on the brake. That's why it's there, and may still function the same in this car. Also the tiptronic paddle shifters were great, very responsive and easy to use. I miss that car dearly!

If any of you are looking to get this range of S5, I highly recommend getting one with the “Prestige” package. The interior bits are trimmed in carbon fiber, and a few other things. Also, read up on carbon build up, and watch out for the “Sport differential system fault”. If this shows up as an error, they effectively have to replace the entire rear end. In my experience, things started falling apart around the engine, but these V8’s were damn near bullet proof.

However my A4 didn’t have it so I actually turned on the car using that same key fob as a button, you put it in the slot then push it like a button and it’d turn on. Loved it. @@ldmtag Okay so im a S5 owenr and avid enthusiast. the B8 S4 AND S5 which came out in 2007 have the 4.2L V8 we see in this video. the B8 A5, also of the same year came with the 3.2L V6. In 2008, (i believe, may have been a bit later) they introduced the 3.0L supercharged V6 as an option for both the S5, and S4. You could still get the V8. At about this time, the A5, lost the 3.2L V6, and got a turbocharged 2.0L 4cyl. in 2013, the B8.5 came out which was a facelift version of these cars. At this time the 3.0L supercharged V6 became standard in the S5 & S4, however you could still choose a V8 as an option. In 2017, the B9 platform came out. the B9 S4 & S5 now featured ONLY the 3.0L V6, BUT this V6 had a single turbocharger, NOT a supercharger. It is essentially the same engine just with a different means of forced induction.

Although I had a fair number of issues with it, my 2008 S5 6 speed MT was probably my favorite vehicle that I've ever owned. It had the red interior with carbon accents, and I got so many compliments on it. It was a beautiful combination with the meteor grey exterior. I wouldn't say it was incredibly fast, but it was quick and there's nothing like a V8. Mine was a CPO with 21K miles when I bought it, drove it to 75K miles. I’m a car guy and a fanatic about maintenance, and mine was never abused. Still had to have the intake valves cleaned twice due to carbon buildup, shifter box had to be rebuilt and then eventually replaced due to a recurring squeak, clutch started having to be pressed super hard to start the car at 31K miles which resulted in replacement, then the clutch pedal started creaking 15K miles later which required the pivot assembly to be replaced, both front seat frames cracked and had excessive play (I'm not a heavy guy at 175 lbs, and it happened to both seats), driver's side window regulator went out, guide links & lower control arms had to be replaced to resolve a steering wheel vibration (TSB on this one), driver's side front wheel bearing went at 56K miles, exterior passenger door handle had to be replaced (touch to lock/unlock wasn't working), etc. Thankfully, the CPO warranty covered all of this. And if you live in a cold climate and you get ice build up on your windows, the window doesn’t always drop when you open those frameless doors and then they damage the chrome trim when you close the door. Despite all of this, I loved the car. Just wouldn’t recommend owning one out of warranty. This was also the first or second year for the S5 IIRC, I think they worked out a lot of these kinks on the newer ones. The styling, driving experience, B&O sound system, technology (for the time), etc., was all top notch!

Great review Doug. I bought one of these new in 2008 (black on black with the 6spd manual and 20 inch RS4 factory fit alloys) and used it as my daily for 5 years. Although I'd like some more space in my garage I just can't part with it, the roar of the V8 still brings a smile to my face 15 years later. I grew up lusting after Camaros and Trans-Ams and this car is about as close as I could get with the steering wheel on the right hand side of the cabin. Over here in the UK they are cheap as chips nowadays largely, I believe, because the modifiers have pimped-up the few that remain. I am probably tempting fate to report that I've had no serious mechanical issues to date although I must attend to the surface rust on the rear subframe (a common problem I am told).

It was also silver, and the first time I saw it in the parking lot, I took a special trip across the lot to walk by it. What a beautiful car! In the time since, I've owned an A6, and I now own an A5 S-Line from this same generation. My also has the manual, and though the 3.2 V6 isn't as quick, the car is plenty fun to drive! And, it's plenty comfortable when I'm just cruising in it. I expect this version of the S5 is going to shoot up in value, soon. Not enough options exist out there for the combination of a V8 engine, a manual transmission, and a fantastic AWD system. I'm hoping I can upgrade to one soon, before I can't afford 'em anymore.
