One thing that was very impressive on these early Cayenne models is how reliable the air suspension is. Even Japanese cars would start having problems after about 10 years. The Cayenne system rarely ever experience any leaks, and when it fails it's usually not just replacing the whole system like some range rovers.

I paid very little for an 06 Turbo S not too long ago. It had $18k in receipts from a long term owner. It still broke literally every two weeks for the 6 months that I owned it. It was insane. When I traded it in it was on it's 3rd center shaft bearing/bushing in less than 95k miles. Air suspension faults that not even the porsche dealer could figure out. To replace a cracked coolant reservoir (a common fault) you need to remove the passenger headlight even though the reservoir is against the engine fire wall. I needed a 3 ft extension to remove one bolt. It was a truly insane car to work on. Rotors were ungodly expensive, the rear vents stopped blowing hot air, the battery is under the front seat, it has surprisingly little interior space for its size and weight. I could go on and on and on. And yet..like a parent romanticising the early days of raising their kids, I still think about the Cayenne fondly. Conveniently ignoring the absolute insanity and chaos that was daily life with one.

I had a Turbo S in 2006. That year they made mostly Turbo S’. Not many base Turbos were made in ‘06 as this was the swan song year for this body type. It was a beast. Only complaint would be it did have a bit of turbo lag from low rpms compared to current turbo cars. Was a pretty penny in the day at $115k+

2 quirks I didn't see mentioned. 1, pretty sure only the Turbo S had the pop-out rear back up camera in the tailgate. Had to clean mine to get it working, and 2, the Turbo S, maybe all Turbo Cayennes started off in 2nd gear. If you wanted to launch, you had to downshift to first. That gear is mostly for off-road but not much Turbo lag at all when you use it. Also, the Aisin Trans was a variant of the 4Speed Land Cruiser/ Toyota Bus trans.

A couple missed quirks and features: 1. There's a tiny sun visor above the rear view mirror to fill in that last gap when both visors are down. 2. There are SECOND visors you can pull down when you move the primary ones to the side windows.. 3. Under the rear left passenger seat is a tire inflation kit, complete with a built-in gauge. There's a rubber plug you remove in the base of the front passenger seat, and you can inflate tires and other stuff VERY quickly, like from 0-40 PSI in under 3 minutes, thanks to Porsche tapping into the air suspension compressor. My husband owns an 05 Turbo he bought in 2015 with 58k miles on it, and now it's racked up over 114k miles, and has personally replaced the front upper and lower control arms, intake manifold and valve cover gaskets, assorted vacuum and cooling lines, and the AC compressor. He says the one really big downfall with most German cars is all of the plastic tubing, and sealing o-rings tend to fail at an alarming rate. Next on the to-do list is replace all of the oil seals and gaskets that feed the turbos, since they have started to leak in the last month or so. It's still a head-turner, and the tan all leather and alcantara interior gets constant compliments.

A truly hidden gem, I love the handling, speed and off-road capabilities of my 08, of course the trade-off is in the MPG above 100 mph, but it's something that if you want more than 500hp you have to pay. Mine is 140k km (87k miles) and no big issues with the engine, however when I step on the gas pedal (In Sport mode) the transmission get stuck in 3rd gear, so for sure a maintanence is needed. My top speed has been 235km/h (146mph) and you can cruise at 210km/h without issues. (Just arrived from a 16 hours trip). BTW the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV has been a very good decision along with the Posi Quiet Ceramic pads.

Another little feature which I enjoyed in our '09 Cayenne was that once you've pressed one of the gear changing buttons on the wheel and the car switches to manual mode, you can hold in one of those buttons for about 2 seconds and it'll force it back into automatic (he alternative being to either just wait for it to realise that you're not shifting anymore and it'll go back to auto or by flicking the gear leaver into manual and then back into drive). I haven't found any other car that can do that.

This was a quality vehicle from a company that knew it couldn't screw it up. Porsche NEEDED the Cayenne to work. And it did. And as an older car, they're still very reliable and this particular example appears to be VERY well maintained. How a Jeep Grand Cherokee with obnoxiously loud exhaust has an equivalent Doug Score despite it being an utter pile of Jeep will forever boggle my mind.

I remember in 2009 moving from Maine to Atlanta, right near the Porsche headquarters, and seeing Cayennes everywhere. I was sort of losing it. Firstly, I didn't even know they existed, they were sort of weird looking and then I'd see those Turbos ripping up and down the streets; it was like I had arrived on a different planet.

I remember when the Cayenne and the Panamera both came out, seeing them in Motor Trend or Car & Driver magazines, and thinking to myself... These are frickin awesome! It's a Porsche, but it's a 4 door, and still looks like a Porsche! I went against the critics popular opinion, and always have loved the curvy flowy sporty style of the 1st gen Cayennes and Panameras. Even after depreciation, I still can't afford a used Cayenne. If I could, I probably would try to customize one to resemble the Trans-Siberia model which sadly was never mass produced.

One of the reasons (besides financial) that he started cars and bids, was to be able to get his hands on older or special vehicles easier. It’s a great deal in my opinion. He gets more content, the seller gets promotion for the auction and of course Doug makes money off the auction sales.

Hey Doug! You missed on one thing... the Cayenne was offered with a Manual transmission on the base V6 model, AND on the V8 Cayenne S at the time, but only for Europe. That manual transmission was an option you had to order in your Cayenne S, and very, very few of them came out of Porsche with a V8 and a manual gearbox. It appears that less than 1% have been made with this transmission. Lucky for me, I drive one every day here in Paris.

There was also a 2002 - 2009 Chevy Trailblazer SS that you forgot to mention, and it had a much worse interior than the Jeep Grand Cherokee at the time, but it also had a rear opening glass as well. The old Trailblazer also had a lot of rebadged SUVs like the GMC Envoy, the Izuzu Ascender, The Buick Rainier, the SAAB 97x, and the Oldsmobile Bravada. I feel like you should review the Trailblazer SS or the Buick Rainier GNX since it's also a performance SUV that you never mentioned in most of your videos.
