2015 was another anomaly of a year. They were hyping up the Kanye West Vanguard Award by doing promos and referencing in the clip packages this 09 "Swift/West" incident. Also Kanye announcing his 2020 Presidential Announcement (which never happened), plus an almost Miley nip-slip towards the end of the show... "Oh, my tit's out?") Bieber's first VMA performance since his Comedy Central Roast earlier that year and six years since his last performance on the show was strange. Plus either the premiere broadcast, the reruns or both had to censor/awkwardly film around Rebel Wilson's shirt that has the phrase "F*** The Stripper Police" around the just as awkward time that BLM started. I feel like there's a lot to dig into with the 2010s era of the VMAs, and maybe towards the end of the decade, maybe we'll get an awkward recounting of the 2020's COVID show. (As an avid watcher of the VMAs since I was 10 for 2000, I've only missed 2014 - which I retroactively saw, HERE on KZbin - 2018, 2019 and 2022. I think the VMAs are more a beacon/time capsule of the hottest in pop and pop culture and has pretty much shaped my nostalgic music mind.)

As a massive Swiftie, I do have to add a few things: Young Taylor had a very dirty sense of humor (as evident by her old MySpace posts) she was probably loving the jokes Her winning against such iconic people is really a testament to the force she had, even back then. YBWM was number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Radio Songs chart. It broke records for being a country-pop crossover hit. And the album it came from, Fearless, was also doing phenomenal. Taylor thought that the crowd was bpoing at HER, not at Kanye. She cried backstage, and Taylor Lautner comforted her then. Also apparently, Taylor's mom chased Kanye down a hallway backstage. The very next year at the 2010 VMAs Taylor performed Innocent, a song about how she forgave Kanye. She genuinely tried to be friends with him again, and Kim! Kim once said that Taylor Swift was her favorite singer and Last Kiss was her favorite song! The phone clips were CLEARLY edited and manipulated. I don't know how so many people were dumb enough not to see that back then, but it's even more ridiculous now that we have the full, un-edited version available. I think saying that "she went into hiding" kind of downplays it. She thought people wanted her DEAD. She was not in a good mental state. She's implied that she was suicidal at the time because of the constant cyberbulling and media think pieces and gossip about her.

Beyonce handled that beautifully. Pink called Kanye a "Toolbox" on live TV the next morning. I don't know why people were so surprised by what he did though. Just a few years prior he said "George Bush doesn't care about Black People" on live TV during a telethon. He was standing right next to Mike Myers. The look on Mike's face was PRICELESS. 😂😂 😂😂

The best part about the 2009 VMAs is that it was a well constructed mess; a mess but a very well constructed one. Even with mishaps like Kanye and Lil Mama and still the show went on. Even someone consulted Beyoncé backstage (when she was crying) to ask her to come back out (yes she was told to, i love beyonce but she was told to do that) and bring Taylor out to try and fix the mess he did. Everyone brought something to the table; iconic in every right.

Hello, American here 😅 yes, it is very common for military ads to play before movies, during sports games, TV shows, and yes, award shows. Military is cotton in America--it is woven into the fabric of our lives. I guess we are just used to it. I grew up in a military town so all this felt very normal. What's interesting is that they're still advertising like crazy in virtually all American media, and recruitment stats are grim. Still, now that you mention, is very strange. Military is a big part of our pop culture here.
