Hearing about this long term loaner is for-sure a cool idea. Forget consumer reports, the info you pulled out of Lotus and shared with Bisi is what people want to know. Matt, the manufacturers are all going to want you to tour their touring cars. If you can stamp the seal of approval on cool cars like this, people may give cars like the lotus a second serious thought. Thank you for the content. Cheers.

I have been going to the track for lapping days and racing for over a decade and I cannot overstate how awesome this is. Many new cars, even performance cars, can't hold up to track abuse without melting tires, cooking brakes, or overheating the engine. Sure they will make it through the weekend if you take it easy half the time you are on track or short shift to keep the revs down, but to take a bone stock car out and run it to redline and then mash the brakes repeatedly without error or issue is amazing. This is far more important to me than a single lap time or acceleration number. At this price point there are some great cars the Lotus is competing with and this video proves it deserves to be in that company.

Toyota doesn't get money by printing it, unlike the typical big Chinese companies like Geely. I personally would've love Toyota to buy Lotus but they probably don't see it as a good investment or maybe they are just not in the position to buy a car manufacturer.

For the braille on ATMs, it probably is just that they use the same model ATMs everywhere instead of making one specifically for those drive up areas.

I like the long format/test period, i just wish more reviewers did it. I've been in a lot of rental cars that seemed amazing the first day but after a week the shortcomings became clear like when the A/C blower is so loud you can't hear the person next to you. Or reviews that seemingly always say the suspension is to soft after driving it on track for 5min, bet they would change there opinion if they took it on a 2,000 mile trip.

With Harrys Lap timer you can also use the time stamp of any video, also from your proffessional cameras, to create an overlay. You do not have to rely on the phone camera. It is a little more difficult than using the phone camera or a go pro but a description is in the harrys forum.
@ethanbolte59536 жыл бұрын
Hearing about this video for a while now it’s cool to actually see it. I think it turned out well. I think it may be a good idea for those of us that want to see the fastest laps to just take that raw video and post it separately. Put links to them in the overall coverage video description and we can watch them at our discretion. Good job Matt, keep up the great work!
@TheSmokingTire6 жыл бұрын
For most of the fastest laps I don't actually have video. I just have the harry's lap timer data. I was shooting in 4K and it would have like, eaten my phone alive to have all that video. so I was only actually shooting video while doing the commentary for a 20 minute session, and then I cut that down. In a perfect world, if I had even 1 helper, I could have gotten SO much more video. But by yourself, at a track day, it's impossible. The written piece was the focus here, and the video was really just supporting, so I made do with the resources I had. Glad you enjoyed it.

I think the delay of the rev matching may have to do with the electronic throttle calibration. I own a modern Toyota with a Camry engine as well (2013 Scion TC) and by no means am I comparing it to a high dollar sports car like the Evora, but I think the throttle tuning may be the same. When I try to rev match, i really have to stab the pedal and let the revs rise, and then move the gear shifter. It's a weird delayed input, especially in comparison to the NA miata i have. Maybe this camry motor is similar?
@tomindenver13316 жыл бұрын
A common saying among Lotus owners is "Don't wimp the blip." It's true of the Elise/Exige 4cyl, too. Maybe it's a Toyota quirk, but I really stab the throttle hard on downshifts. Great to see Matt doing a typical Lotus track day-drive it to the track, wail on it for a while, then drive it home.
@ossumopossum6 жыл бұрын
@doctorlobsteroctopus - it has got to be a Toyota thing. I have an 03' Matrix XRS with the 2zz-ge, which loves to rev out. I believe it is the last year of mechanical throttlebody on the 2zz engine, but it also needs a deliberate stab at the throttle to blip for a down shift. It is almost comical at times because the throttle pedal is soo incredibly light as far as pedal resistance, yet to rev up out of gear really requires the boot.

Can you get oil changes done at the Toyota dealer? :)
@TheSmokingTire6 жыл бұрын
I asked about this - not a firm yes, but not a no either. Here is the exact response to my inquiry from Lotus's Man: The whole engine is Toyota but as the ECU and software was created by Lotus there is very little a non-Lotus dealer could do other than identify the ‘check engine light’ codes. Most of the sensors on the engine are Toyota so these could in theory be replaced/diagnosed by a Toyota dealer. The ‘check engine light’ codes are mainly generic with the legal requirement being that any small repair facility with a generic scan tool can identify the mandatory codes. However there are Lotus specific codes that only the Lotus scan tool (TechCenter) can identify plus various diagnostic routines. Things like oil changes, filter change, brake pads, air filter servicing can readily be carried out by a competent non-Lotus dealer.

One of my favorite things about driving a new track is learning the basic layout in a video game and then showing up to find out how close the game is. Obviously in 2018, the games are very close. When I went to Mid-Ohio to race last year, I did an hour in the simulator before hand and it only took me like 3 laps to get up to speed on the real track, it was amazing!

The only thing I noticed is that all of us are so used to listening to you talk behind the wheel, and normally when you're sitting in a chair or at a table, it's for an ad, so we're not used to digesting your content this way. What about if you shot the in between clips during regular / canyon driving so you can not only comment in on the track, but also the inbetween? I dunno, I enjoyed it otherwise.
