Haven is interesting because it is uncommon for video games to have a legit husband and wife be the main characters and aren't acting like they came straight from high school. They've been married for years and they have common arguments like everyday couples do. But they are both willing to sacrifice their livelihood for each other to not end up in prison or dead.
@newsystembad3 жыл бұрын
I'm really glad he talked about Haven, even if only in a post-year roundup. I kinda fell in love with the game, to be honest. Besides there being precious few games that are actually _about_ a relationship (and not just the chase up to when the couple get together), there's also not a lot of romance stories that cast a brown guy as the male romantic lead. Really great game all around. I played through it once myself, now I need to drag my girlfriend into playing with me. XD

My wife and I have been doing a sort of Bechdel test on movies looking for stories that center on a stable husband and wife couple adventuring together since that aspect was jettisoned from the Valerion movie. Good examples of it are... Almost entirely non-existent. If it doesn't include animosity, a divorce, or infidelity, people aren't interested in playing with that dynamic. Which sucks. We already have buddy cop movies, it's not that much of a leap. haha /Vent over.

Tales of Arise is one game that in spite of being anime as balls I really liked because it explored genuinely interesting issues and interpersonal relationships in heartfelt ways. Tales is generally pretty good on that in spite of being anime as balls, especially recently. I say "generally" cause Zestiria exists.
@Horvath_Gabor3 жыл бұрын
"Explored genuinely interesting issues and interpersonal relationships in heartfelt ways" describes 90% of JRPGs, it's just that most people, including Yathzee, have some kind of weird preconceived notion about all of them being dumb compared to the "real" CRPGs and never really give them the attention they deserve. It took Yathzee over a decade to even engage with the Persona games, and even then, it sounds like he felt ashamed in finding them actually really good.
@beo38283 жыл бұрын
@@Horvath_Gabor The anime aesthetic has amassed a number of negative attributes that might not always translate to the games in this style, but sure as hell are a staple of it. You kinda need to know what to pick from the lot, so someone without much experience is just going to treat them all the same.
@Horvath_Gabor3 жыл бұрын
@@beo3828 The issue is that the same goes for many other genres as well, and those don't get this kind of instant, no-second-look-given dismissal. @@Horvath_Gabor you're not wrong (and a lot of JRPGs predate the genre getting "anime as balls"). But there are legitimate criticisms in terms of what the genre brings mostly because well... Haven is one of my favorite games of all-time. The relationship between the 2 main characters is very unique for games as a whole, and I didn't mind the lite jrpg and crafting/survival elements (things I usually hate) since they were executed decently and not too tedious. I do wish there were a few more environment types butttt that's okay. I also loved Solar Ash. Mario Galaxy + SotC + Sonic kinda sounds like a dream game of mine. While it doesn't quite reach those heights, I liked it way more than Yahtzee did. Yes, the movement and combat is relatively simple, but that's bc it's all about flow. And it feels great to string together jumps, attacks, grapples, etc all in one sequence. The side stories are pretty interesting too, if you put in the effort.

It is a rather unfortunate story honestly. The game is a bit buggy in singleplayer and local Co-op, but in online co-op the "bit" flies through the closed window, lands on the road 8 stories down, is ran over by a semi, and is replaced by a crapton. It crashes every 10 minutes or so, along with a plethora of delightful other things. That being said, it is a beautiful game. The unfortunate part, is that most of the main people that had worked on it have left the company, and there will probably be no more bugfixes in the future. Which makes me quite sad.

The ascent had so much potential. My playthrough didn't have all of the bugs other people did, but a lot didn't feel fleshed out quest-wise. That said, the environment is so good it makes me a little mad. There's so much going on, so much to see, it all makes sense and feels real while simultaneously feeling like a fever dream. The combat is solid, and progression actually makes you feel powerful. Haven was one of my favorite games of the year. The music was good enough for me to favorite on Spotify and listen to on occasion, the combat wasn't that bad, the survival crafting stuff makes sense since the game is legit about surviving on a remote planet to repair your spaceship. The overarching story is simple and fantastic. They actually do some great storytelling, and you can pick out a few spots of foreshadowing if you pay attention. I actually ended up being so invested that I treated the game like Subnautica, carefully preparing food days in advance and maxing out my healing and combat items ASAP. Guess what? It payed off, with a boss that came out of nowhere and almost crushed me. There's only one boss that will truly test you, and I've seen some reviews that complain about it, but it's a completionist secret boss.

I was disappointed too it didn’t make this list. That said, I imagine he’d have awkward feelings about the writing style. He would certainly mock "Where are you? Have you grown tired of buildings?"

I would have liked seeing him review Tales of Arise just because everytime a game is anime as balls he hates it and the review is hilarious
@vigorouslethargy3 жыл бұрын
I don't think there was enough to hate. Arise was actually pretty solid overall and yanked the Tales series out of its recent downward spiral.

@@vigorouslethargy I've only played Zestiria and Berseria, but how were the games before them? Personally, Zestiria was whatever, and Berseria was great. I didn't know they were going downhill.

I thought the recent games were fine enough I don’t know about them going completely downhill
@vigorouslethargy3 жыл бұрын
@@vKuya See, for me Zesteria and Berseria were the downward slope. I *will* say Berseria's combat was fluid as heck and enjoyable, but the story wasn't doing it for me. The first 10-15% was great, but the next 80% was basically nobody having any character development except Eleanor. Velvet especially was very bland. She had 2 emotions: "I must get revenge" and "I must protect little brother." If it was outside that scope, Velvet didn't give a shit. If I had to make recommendations based on my taste, I'd say Abyss, Vesperia, Xillia, and Symphonia were among the most memorable high points.

I played the Record of Loddoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth game. Yahtzee's points are valid, I think I liked the art style and more than him, but all in all there are better metroidvanias out there. The Story is vaguely comprehensible with what I recall from the OVA I watched some 20 odd years ago, but the whole Loddoss War series is kinda the pregenorator Token Fantasy concept for the anime spectrum. I would compare it to Lord of the Rings in the sense that a lot more Fantasy concepts spun off of it than out right recognize the historical tracing. All in all, it was a good game and good value for the cost, but as I recall it released for something like $20 so it was within scope and not challenging to be compared to larger games.

I think he already played it and don't think it's worth criticising for undisclosed reasons.

I wasn't mad at Yahtzee for any reason during this episode until I read "gleefully still not reviewing Inscryption" at 5:45. I could have forgiven him for being ignorant of that absolute masterpiece but now he's just rubbing it in our faces how little he cares. It's his style, I guess, but it's sad how that one line is all the love Daniel Mullins Games has gotten in a ZP video since Pony Island so many years ago.
@vigorouslethargy3 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure he mentioned in an Extra Punctuation that he's not reviewing it for the same reason he didn't review Undertale. It's a subversion of the genre itself and it's best left for people to discover on their own.
