Those mustangs were crude from the FACTORY, and required your own set of hand tools onboard so that you could bolt the door panels back on when they fell off after shutting a door. Yes, it looks pretty good. But it could've looked even better had it been based on the LC chassis like it SHOULD have been (as the MKIV was based on the SC)... To see what could have been, look at the FT-1 concept (the basis for the Supra style). The larger LC platform would've much more faithfully translated the proportions than the compact BMW Z4. But ehh, it is what it is I suppose.

Toyota has done a great job with the Supra. Those are some serious performance stats but PLEASE make it with a 6 speed manual. Without that manual, the upcoming 400Z with a manual, the Mustang Ecoboost High Performance Package with the Handling Package in a manual and even the new Subaru BRZ with a manual are getting my attention.

@@bk83082 I hope so because from the MANY car enthusiasts I have talked to, they also agree not having even the option of a manual in the Supra is a big mistake especially seeing how Nissan is offering a manual in the Supra's natural rival the 400Z, right out of the gate. Actually, with my Honda Civic Type R I can happily row my own gears. I did want a car that is RWD and a manual but if Toyota never does it as I said in my previous post, people have options. On the eve of the electric future, all EVs are automatic in practice so when that happens cars with good manuals will be even more sought after.

@@dewarkhodern9990 May be hypocrisy for some but not for me. One of the reasons I bought my Honda Civic Type R is because it is a manual and it has one of the best in the business. Going forward into the electric future, electric cars will continue to be quicker than even the fastest automatics and all eclectic cars are automatics as far as driver interaction is concerned. What will really set gasoline powered cars apart and is having a manual transmission. That interaction between man and machine is something you can't get with electric car and will only be more sought after when more people figure this out with electric vehicles. We even see this now with the value of manual cars being much higher than their automatic counterparts.

Some uninformed comments on here. About the MK5 A90 Supra. 1.) The V8 is on its way out as the IS500 is the last car the V8 will be available in. V8’s don’t go in Supra’s. 2.) Toyota didn’t have a platform, didn’t have a plant, didn’t have an inline 6 etc etc for a car like this. 3.) BMW wouldn’t have built the Z4 if Toyota didn’t partner with them. 4.) it’s all about attainability. Toyota wanted an attainable car. If they would’ve developed and built this exact car themselves, it would’ve been much more expensive. 5.) the LC500 platform is shared with the LS and way to heavy for a car such as the Supra.

Nowadays to make a sportscars with reasonable financial sense you have to collab with other manufacturers to share the costs. It's not viable for Toyota to make their own straight-6 for only *one* car. It would've been more than $70k maybe $100k if they made the mk5 Supra from scratch.

Its not that impressive when you take both cars msrp into consideration. And the fact that yes the supra might get the stang off the jump but not the quarter mile or beyond. Plus the 3.0 supra is 10k more than a gt stang. You put 10k into that stang and that supra looks like a corolla

But people don't often complain when it's shared up, like Toyota providing Chevy small cars that were actually reliable in the Chevy Prizm, or Pontiac Vibe... Also, the power plants VW develops for Bugatti are bespoke to Bugatti. And Koenigsegg used Ford's V8's at first because things were tight, as soon as they could afford to, they developed their own engines.. But it's a bit more a bummer when things get shared downward, like the Supra here. Which we all know will be massively less reliable than a Toyota should be.. But also, to Wolf's point. It's gimped. BMW will of course never give the Zupra the strength to compete with their M models. So it will remain mediocre. Meanwhile, the MKIV Supra T wiped the floor with M3's of similar vintage. While the MKV Supra barely keeps up with the hairdresser BMW Z4. Pathetic. I'm a Japanese car fan, and tbh, I'd have a Mustang over a MKV Supra... Above all, the Mustang is proudly it's own thing, with it's own engines. While the Zupra is a pathetic, badge engineered pretender.

The new MK5 more of a Supra than the MK4. The MK4 was literally a 6 cylinder Japanese muscle car, fast in a straight line, but pretty scary to handle when the road turned curvy.

I was born with a whole in my heart and had open heart surgery when I was 4 years old and grew up fine until April of '06 when I got a blood clot which caused a stroke on my left side of my body went through 3 months of rehab to learn to walk talk and take care of myself and then on September first of '08 I didn't wake up that morning had a cardiac arrest which both my cat Nemo and my now ex wife Angy saved my life, I've been told not to drive again which I haven't.

I had a 21 supra and the bmw issues exist. Had the tpms light come on randomly due to external forces, chasis code, battery light warning that can only be shut off by dealership, and the transmission was sometimes hesitant from stand still. 7k miles later and usold it. Guess Toyota didn't do quality check on other components except the engine.

The NA 2JZ was slow and under powered. Integras were faster

At least they finally 'De-gimped' the Supra. So it's at least on par with it's BMW hairdresser's car contemporary... Though, still a far cry from what the MKIV Supra Turbo was, which took the fight to similar vintage M3's and Corvettes. These days? Zupra could'nt dream of such comparisons. Unless the planned GRMN Supra actually comes out.

You're literally talking about a car that is literally a dressed up Lexus SC400/300(and the 300 had the 2JZ before the MK4), that which in Turbocharged trim had a tough time against base C4 Corvettes from the 90s. Which costing a few thousands above the base model C4s. And this ain't counting the C4 ZR1 which literally handed the MK4s a s s on the silver plater

Remember the difference in worth of the dollar/inflation back in the 90s to today. TT MK4 were around the 40k range, in today’s money is around 60k or so. So really the mkv is adequately priced. Yeah you can say mustangs and camaros are cheaper with more power, 1 power isn’t everything, and 2 they can price it cheaper since they already have so many different trims and engine, 4 cyl, V6, V8. Just swapping the engine basically

I bought a new 21 Supra last August. 7k miles later I ran into quite a few issues. My car threw a battery warning light that can only be shut off by the dealerships, a chassis code from height sensor, random tpms light due to external forces, and the transmission became hesitant from stand still and sometimes struggled to accelerate. I eventually sold the car because I didn't want to deal with the issues once the warranty ran out. I thought Toyota did a quality check on the Supra but I guess they were more concerned about the engine and left everything else unchecked. That or I suppose I got a lemon.

@@bliglum you do realize that Toyota generally like to spend time making/engineer a new car from scratch? The LFA they made took roughly a decade of R&D. All this R&D time/engineering costs money, and yes the LFA is expensive because of that. The Supra took less time for them to make thanks to platform sharing. If Toyota made the Supra on their own it would not have been a $50-$60k car, it would be more like $90-$100k (Jaguar F-Type money). Now imagine what all the fanboys would say at that. Also platform sharing isn't anything new, the Mk4 Supra shared its chassis and engine with the Lexus SC.

If the MK5 A90/J29 Supra is "just a BMW Z4", which the BMW Z4 current generation of the G29 wouldn't exist with the MK5(due to floppy sales of the last generation's BMW Z4) , then the MK4 A80 Supra is just a dressed-up Lexus SC400/300(300 already had the 2JZ before the MK4 Supra. While the 1UZ for the 400 was the top option over the 2JZ). And the MK4 A80 Supra was not a good seller, the MK3 A70 Supra (Third Generation) was.

For some reason when I see the BRZ and 86 it doesn’t bother me in the slightest because that car didn’t exist for either Subaru or Toyota when they worked together. But with this, 80% built on an existing inferior car that already existed in the market and then Toyota tries to lie to you that this is more Toyota than it really is but I don’t know. I’m not on the engineering team so I could be talking out of my ass.

Some uninformed comments on here. About the MK5 A90 Supra. 1.) The V8 is on its way out as the IS500 is the last car the V8 will be available in. V8’s don’t go in Supra’s. 2.) Toyota didn’t have a platform, didn’t have a plant, didn’t have an inline 6 etc etc for a car like this. 3.) BMW wouldn’t have built the Z4 if Toyota didn’t partner with them. 4.) it’s all about attainability. Toyota wanted an attainable car. If they would’ve developed and built this exact car themselves, it would’ve been much more expensive. 5.) the LC500 platform is shared with the LS and way to heavy for a car such as the Supra.
