The 2020 Toyota Supra didn't, unfortunately, light the enthusiast world on fire. While a new Toyota sports car is always welcome, the fact is, the Supra is a thinly disguised BMW Z4 with a fixed roof. Furthermore, it wasn't exactly finely tuned out of the box. For 2021, Toyota has re-programmed all computers, from the ECU to the ESC, the differential, adaptive dampers and gearbox, plus changed the bump stops to hopefully improve the bump-steer situation. The changes are substantial, but is that enough to make the Supra lustworthy?
Correction: I incorrectly guessed 295 section rear tires in the video. They are 275 section.
Toyota provided the vehicle, insurance, and a tank of fuel for this review.

TheSmokingTire I’m pretty sure before they even dropped the 2020 Supra, at the pres conference, they said that they were going to release updated versions of the Supra every year for the next five or seven years I think. So the people that bought 2020 supers and think that they got screwed over, they should’ve done the research just a little more and they would’ve known that...

“The 1998 Supra gained its iconic nature after it went out of production.” That’s literally nearly every performance based toyota/Lexus ever. Celica and MR2during production - these cars are boring. (Sales start declining) After they’re discontinued - they were, good fun cars. ISF during production - car sucks. After it’s discontinued - man, this is a good car they should bring it back. It’s a classic. LFA - car is overpriced garbage. After production ends - man this car is so special. They should’ve made more. Current Supra - this is bmw garbage. It’s boring. After production ends - man, I have no idea why they ended production. They should bring back the Supra.

It also has a larger turbocharger, different cylinder heads, and has a different bottom end (as of now I can't tell exactly what about the bottom end is different but what's telling is that the compression ratio of the 2021 Supra is different to the Z4). In a vacuum, the 2020 Supra has better acceleration because the 2021 Supra gets its full torque 200 rpm later than the 2020 Supra. However in real life, that 200 rpm difference is pretty negligible because the 2021 has a way fatter power and torque band than the 2020 throughout the entire rev range, so the 2021 Supra beats out the 2020 Supra in acceleration anyways and would walk the 2020 Supra at higher speeds. What's really telling is that once you look at Car and Driver's dyno results of a 2021 vs a 2020 Supra, the 2021 easily has another ~50 horsepower and ~30 lb-ft of torque more than the 2020 Supra from 5000 rpm all the way to when everything drops off redline, meaning the 2021 Supra would pull like a freight train on the 2020 Supra at the top end and would run away into the distance after they're both neck in neck for a couple of seconds assuming you race them from a standing start. The 2021 is simply an order of magnitude faster. However I actually like the sound of the 2020 model better.
@RalfMilo
@RalfMilo 4 жыл бұрын
@@0Camus0 It will be a restriction once the aftermarket really gets going at making power with the B58. Porting an integrated manifold head is much more difficult and it still won't flow as well as a traditional ported head. A better flowing head will make the same power at less boost.

The 2021 model uses new pistons that decrease the compression ratio from 11:1 to 10.2:1. Decreasing the compression ratio allows MUCH more boost. The new car is not only much faster in stock form but will also be much easier to tune to extremely high horsepower numbers. The 2021 model is the one to get.
@SI0AX
@SI0AX 3 жыл бұрын
Wow, that is a major change, very weird. The lower compression ratio makes for a little less response and decreased fuel economy though. Not that will make any difference when you swap out to a bigger turbo, lol.
@LearningFast
@LearningFast 3 жыл бұрын
SI0AX decreasing the compression ratio does decrease fuel economy slightly but has little to no detrimental effects on all performance aspects. The new Supra is as fast or much faster than the old one almost every single rpm across the rev range. There is no good reason to have an 11:0 compression ratio in a turbo charged car. I could only find two other vehicles that do it and those cars are not that well regarded.
@SI0AX
@SI0AX 3 жыл бұрын
@@LearningFast I heard the only real performance advantage to a higher compression ratio is reducing turbo lag and boost threshold. But with a big turbo, I don't think it's going to make much of a noticeable difference and the cons of the high CR on a turbo car outweighs the pro's.

As far as first adopters getting hosed, you can only have a launch edtion of a car only once and they got the first edition of the reimagined Supra. As long as they resist the desire to modify it to kingdom come, they will have a nice collectible on their hands.

Ricardo it all depends on who maintains the car in the end. When I first got my MK4, it was nothing but problems. A Toyota nameplate doesn’t make it reliable, just like a BMW badge doesn’t make it unreliable. Sure, the electronics will give way, and become obsolete, but I think this power train will have some good staying power for years to come. Love the closed-deck design and with the new non-integrated exhaust manifold, it’s looking promising for tuning and maintenance.

The wind buffeting is so easily fixed with fins that introduce turbulence into the air running between the side mirrors and the windows. But the fact that Toyota hasn't introduced this fix with the car suggests to me that disrupting airflow in those channels messes with the driving dynamics of the car. (it's easily googled - supra wind deflector)

@joeracer302
@joeracer302 4 жыл бұрын
It’s a tooling production issue and the fact that this car already cost so much during development. A simple fix like this costs millions to implement and some testing needs to be recertified for homologation, e.g. mpg certification like another mentioned (possibly, sometimes can write an engineering justification and use other tests and simulations to get around more testing), so they aren’t keen to make changes that aren’t already budgeted. Also, they’re a huge company and not always the most agile with changes. Source: used to be product development engineer at one of the Big 3, and it was eye opening learning how much “simple fixes” cost to implement across a production fleet.

That's an interesting ratio you've presented Matt that 3000 pounds and 400whp yields you the sweet spot for overall acceleration. One of my project cars has that exact same ratio and it is by far more fun to drive than my other two projects which have a little less power but same weight. Of course anything can be fun with the right chassis dynamics (Miata, Fiesta ST for example), but having that power ratio really unlocks the max fun factor without the liberal use of aero. At least this is how I understood your observation.

@@Gandalf721 And I think that's an incredibly obtuse, flawed way to look at it. My baseline of car 's dynamics stems from a '97 Mazda Miata and a 2011 Mini Cooper. In comparison, a car with 2-4 times the power, torsional stiffness, and chassis dynamics of the Supra would obviously be superior. I think the inherent value of a review from an automotive *journalist* is that they have driven literal THOUSANDS of cars, and can therefore make a much more meaningful conclusion than someone like me, who has driven about 10 different cars ever, and 2 with enough regularity to have some semblance of an understanding of how they are dynamically. There are other journalists whose opinions I also respect, who have more positive views on this car's dynamics than Matt Farah does. So that's all I was bringing up. It's strange, because I watched the one take again, and Matt somehow makes the whole video have a negative undertone, despite praising it in little doses throughout. But I do agree with the video more now that I've watched it a 2nd time. I think the ending line is the best, where it says that its a good car, but it's not a good Supra.

So, what is a supra supposed to be that this car isn't? People always say that the new supra isn't what a supra should be, but they can never follow up with what they mean. I think the real question to ask with this car is; if BMW can build the supra at 3350lbs, with a factory LSD. Why in the name of sweet baby jesus is the m240i 3870 fucking pounds with smaller rear seats than the outgoing, 400lb lighter m240i!!! The supra seems to be in a class of it's own. Now more than ever a lightweight, powerful car is hard to find or incredibly expensive. 3350lbs, 450 hp(in reality), front engine, rear wheel drive, good fuel economy, LSD, ability to fit massively wide tires on it, endless tuning abilities. If toyota would have made the supra a full Toyota "supra" it would be in GTR price territory. $100K+ likely heavier, bigger, and maybe a little more powerful but everyone would say "who is buying a 100k Toyota?!" "It's too expensive!" And they would likely still complain that it doesn't have a 2JZ. The only thing I think they could have done better was the throw a 6 speed in it. I feel like that was BMW and not Toyota though. If you don't mind a 2 seater, and you're of more reasonable proportions I think the supra is the car to buy. I think what BMW has done here is shoot themselves in the foot. They can build lightweight cars that are fast and fun to drive, but they keep making bigger and heavier cars. Why BMW? In reality, the supra is the new z4 m coupe.

You can fix that with a $5 part from Amazon. I think this car is great at its price.

It also can compete and could be cross shopped with an ss 1le or a gt350. Rear wheel drive, 50 grandish, upper 3.0s 0-60. Also not built as a luxury car but a sports car sortve like those americans. Another one I can think of is the f type 3.0 SC

Not to mention line of sight out the drivers side, at 6’3” you have to bend down to check for right hand turns. Honestly better lines of sight in a Camaro

Blane Gray my wife hates the Camaro, one of her friends has one that she’s been in for comparison, and she said the same thing when we went to test drive the Supra (I was thinking it would make a good daily for her). The visibility for such a small car is sooooo bad, worse than a Camaro, which is one of the worst cars I’ve been in for visibility. Yes you can get used to it, but good visibility is nice. I had higher hopes for this car, sad that it lets me down.

@@joeracer302 I daily a Camaro, and I am not even going to try to defend the visibility in that vehicle. One of my coworkers has a 2020 Supra, I didn’t drive it, but I did give it a solid once over bumper to bumper. The two things that stuck out were the interior roof line and driver space. It felt as tight as any Miata I have ever been in, not necessarily unusable, but not comfortable. I feel like even if they did add a manual option it would be such a tight space to operate in that I couldn’t make it work outside a weekender/racer

I can't drive camaro's because of having to duck down to look out the side window. If this car is worse than that, wow.

@Green Giant This! All car designers must be really short because almost every single vehicle I've ever driven I've had a massive front right blind spot called the rearview mirror and I have to duck to see under, at 6'4" it's a huge problem

Did they fix the main complaint? Or is it still a BMW?

I don’t understand the bmw complaint. The b58 is the best 6 cylinder turbocharged engine on the market right now. The zf8 speed is the best automatic on the market right now. Toyota decided to take the best things available and put it on their car. Would you rather it has some shitty untunable engine or some shitty automatic?

@@LegendInThaMakin It doesn't matter if the b58 is made out of gold, its not a Toyota made motor period just like the rest of the car. I would rather it was developed and built by Toyota from Toyota parts with a manual transmission.. or not exist at all.

Hey Matt, please test drive a 2021 BMW Z4. Maybe it doesn't have the same wind buffeting problem? One of the pleasures of driving my Toyobaru BRZ is that I can chose between AC or or rolling the windows down. Mine has a header, cat-back, and a mild tune, so I have every incentive to roll down the windows and listen to the Subi-boxer burble of my UEL header. The BRZ has no wind buffeting problems: I roll the windows down and enjoy the breeze while driving at any speed - its great! My late wife and I had a minivan that had really bad wind buffeting: the alternating constructive/destructive interference would just hammer on your ear drums if you lowered the windows the wrong way. And there weren't many right ways. If my late wife was pissed at me she'd roll her window down to maximize the buffeting just to punish me. If I adjusted my window to reduce it she'd readjust her's to increase it back. We were in that minivan when I saw a BRZ in traffic for the very first time and I pointed it out to her. I had already read how good they were and I told her I'd like to buy one. My now late wife took one look at it and said, "Over my dead body!" I will never buy a car that has a wind buffeting problem, ever again.

Looks like they got rid of a few millimeters of wheel well gap on the 2021 as well. Had a 2014 focus st and got a 2017 which sits from factory as it should.
