I hate when people talk about the economy of GT7. Gran Turismo has always been grindy, long before microtransactions or in game purchases. That is just the game. There are plenty of ways to make good money if you know what you are doing and yes you have to put in some time to get all the cars or best cars. That is just the way it is. GT7 was a fantastic game and deserved more praise this year.

Dang. Look at these good looking folks. Greg's got that classic Clark Kent look going on. Regarding the question about games with bad gameplay, but great stories... Alpha Protocol would be my pick. It's so busted, but it's one of the best modern rpgs, where the choices actually matter, and actually change things in the narrative. It was also an Obsidian game, so the great story is not surprising.

As someone who's 60 Hours into Midnight Suns, it's very underated. And I think the lack of recognition is a Kind of Funny thing. Max and Jada talked about how fun it is on Beyond on IGN this week. Empire Magazine put it at number 5, only behind 1) Elden Ring, 2) Immortality, 3) GOW Ragnarok, and 4) The Last of Us part 1 Remake, in it's top 20 games of the year. Sam Barlow Retweeted the Empire Magazine post , as Immortality was number 2. As if you check it on Twitter or KZbin playthroughs, lots of people, Even those who haven't played tactics RPGs before, are loving the game, and we're all playing on console, (PlayStation). Even the Xbox players, who were last to get the 1st update patch, complained about that, but only because they're loving the game, and some were stuck with a bug. I think even Greg, who wasn't a fan, would have loved the conversations with Captain America in the game, like the one where he talks about how humans will always have war. For me personally as a Marvel Comics fan, this is now my number 2 GOTY, only behind Elden Ring, but if front of GOW Ragnarok. Also, best PS plus games (though I already own and have beaten all these games on PS4/PS5) 1) Mass Effect Legendary Edition 2) Yakuza Like A Dragon 3) Slay the Spire 4) Nioh 2

I'm still playing Ragnarok, but Forbidden West seems like a bigger improvement over Zero Dawn than Ragnarok is to 2018. And for that, it makes me like Forbidden West a little more.

Best Trophy list is clearly Forbidden West for me. Ragnarok makes you do the exact same muspelhiem trials over and over, the ravens are still annoying, and you still have to clear everything. FW makes you interact with most of its content, but without forcing you to do every version of those tasks. It’s simple, and leads you to areas you might never have scoured before.

It works better in movies because in movies you don’t have to control a character that just did somthing you are disgusted by. The main reason I didn’t enjoy playing TLOU2 was because I just physically didn’t want to control Abby.

@@BasketCase-rr7tx You’re supposed to feel physically disgusted by Abby’s actions and Ellie’s actions, as you play both of them. Your helplessness in stopping them from committing the acts they commit is a mirroring of their own helplessness in escaping the path of revenge they are too deeply steeped in to escape. The ability to control the character’s movement only to have control taken away in these key moments is what makes the story more impactful as a game than as a movie.

Wanted to say that it's about story for me, but realized how many hours I've put into Destiny and Diablo. That said, I've put even *more* hours into Final Fantasy XIV, Witcher 3, Dragon Age 3, so I landed on this: Gameplay comes first, but it satisfies most when paired with great story. Gameplay without story can start to feel empty.

With regards to GT7: The microtransaction issue is a moot point. They don't push you towards it at all, they are not even in the menus. And god forbid you have to play the game in order to buy more cars! I have not had issue with money, or acquiring cars. During the campaign they hand out cars like candy.

You can't have a good game without good gameplay. You can have a great game without any discernable story. I can play Dead Cells or Slay the Spire and not even think about story. And those are wonderful games. If a game was all story and no gameplay, you could just watch it as a video or movie, and never interact with it.

A thing that is fundamentally being missed from this conversation is that there is no one single definition of what gameplay in. Visual novels that are mostly making dialogue choices and maybe some adventure game mechanics (a la Ace Attorney) still have good gameplay, its just that the gameplay is different and in service of different things. VNs like Danganronpa and Zero Escape have exactly as good as gameplay as every other game, the average gamer is woefully single-minded as to what 'gameplay' means

Story is more important than gameplay imo. Tons of games have very similar gameplay mechanics, its the ones where the characters and narrative resonate with you that leave a lasting impression. I will endure repetitive gameplay to see through the story if its good. If i dont care about the story i will fall off completely and never finish the game.

I love Tinykin because it's way more of a 3D collectathon than a Pikmin game. Nah, GT7 has ridiculous grinding and is always-online for no reason. Deserved the hate. (Related: Olli Olli World should've won racing/sports at TGA) Y'all are underrating Forbidden West again, why don't any of you talk about how much better the combat, traversal, music, and dialogue is than Zero Dawn? (At least Janet called out the better side content) Also wanna shoutout Guerilla for fixing graphical issues and adding a ton of different visual modes post-launch. Plus constantly highlighting community creations and cosplay every month.

Zero Dawn is, imo, a masterpiece. One of the best gaming experiences I've ever had and the first game I ever loved enough to Platinum. I adore that world, Aloy and Sylens are phenomenal characters, and the narrative was one of the coolest I've experienced in a long, long time. Which is why it was such a massive, massive bummer that I ended up absolutely f'ing hating Forbidden West. I don't think it's a terrible game or anything, it certainly has great moments and I don't begrudge anyone who loved it, but almost nothing about it worked or clicked with me.

I don't understand this take. Even if you disagree with the direction the story takes, basically everything else is better. The traversal is vastly expanded, the combat is deeper and allows for more elemental interactions, the music is actually memorable this time, and the side content is infinitely more compelling (aside from matching up the pictures) all on top of the many quality of life improvements and how breathtakingly beautiful it looks on PS5.

To be fair, there are trophies tied to side content and stories. I would also argue that traversal is basically a storytelling device in GoW through dialogue,so story is always part of the experience

To me the question about story vs gameplay is a bit off - in relation to games, these are not two equal parts to be compared. It's like asking about movies, is the sound or the visuals more important? Well if it doesn't have visuals then it's not a movie, whereas a movie can be silent and still be a movie. If a game doesn't have gameplay, then it's not a game, but there are plenty of games with no story: Tetris doesn't have a story, Pac-man doesn't have a story (I know there is some shoehorned lore around, doesn't matter, it's not in the game.)

just my 2p wprth on horizon forbidden west and gt7 gt7 to me is the inverse of pokemon violet/scarlet its technically great but not a good game. it has the worst menus i can remember in a game you are always going back to the main menu to change car/mods to enter a race rather than being able to do that at the race screen, when i was playing it the servers went down for longer than i had played the game at that point and that killed my enjoyment of a single player game i shouldnt need to be online to play the story or just race, and last time i played it the economy was bad the amount of hours you would need to play to get certain cars was insane and you couldnt even sell unwanted cars you had won. forbidden west was just too long i spent the last 10-20 hours jsut wanting the game to end and the to be continued end diddnt feel earned and when its 3-5 years before you get to it (and im nor sure i care enough to play it) it bites and i literally finished the game put down the controller and havent even thought of going back even teh announced dlc dosent have me wanting to play again

A movie with a similar tone to TLOU2 that makes both the Protagonist and Antagonist the main characters is I Saw The Devil. I actually think it works better in movies because in movies you aren’t forced to control characters that you don’t like. I hated Abby in TLOU2 so I had no interest in controlling her, which ruined the game for me to be honest.

I blast through story i don't read I get super annoyed I just want to play the game id much rather have the game tell me through voice whilst i play but if I have to read or whatever I get super bored & quit the game. Sorry to say it but to me BOTW and Elden Ring are the most overrated games. Played both and wasn’t blown away or anything. Not my type of games. I give Souls games a chance and as I play them the more I just don’t see the hype of it. And BOTW is alright but ehh.

God of War 2 is as overrated as the first one, both are good games but both left me relieved to be done with them because the combat, maps and puzzles were all repetitive and spammy as fuck. Felt like I was doing the same thing over and over and over again to the point of tedium, less and less fun with each new iteration. And don't get me started on the UI/upgrade/skill tree systems. Some of the worst I've used in years. But the game is pretty? The cutscenes are well done.
