I'm guessing it's because they're trying to attract a larger market. By making a WRX with a CVT, adaptable dampers, and "adventure" inspired plastic cladding that the general public seems to like Subaru have created a car that is more attractive to the average car buyer instead of the enthusiast. Being that the enthusiast market is much smaller than the nonenthusiast market it makes some sense from a business perspective. Just a guess.

@borek obunga I think the WRX is one of the very rare exceptions where manual is more popular than auto. Subaru themselves said when they dropped the hatch for the 2015 model year, they didn't really notice a drop in sales much, if at all. That basically solidified its position in the grave. I get the concern about the manual transmissions, but I think it's only true in time and place. The USDM complained enough that BMW retrofitted a six speed manual to the E60 M5 as an option for instance. Also, in cars like "ze Germans" you get a proper well sorted automatic that is in fact just better all around than an old school manual (you say you want the manual for gearhead points, but you know the auto is what you really want to live with). In the WRX? It's either a proper manual, or that reheated leftover of a CVT that all other manufacturers saw as useless in the face of newer and better autos and dumped it. If Subaru used a proper DCT or ZF automatic instead of that CVT, they'd sell WAY MORE. Not just auto vs manuals, but WRX's in total.
@pondmonserfox2 жыл бұрын
If this were any other car I would agree with manual transmission comment but according to Subaru themselves, 90% of all the WRXs they sold in the last generation were in fact manuals which makes it even more puzzling why they would only offer the GT trim with the CVT.
@Jay-yg8jj2 жыл бұрын
The only reason sales didn't drop is because the WRX still stands alone on the AWD/Turbo/6MT platform for 26-30k. If someone else pulled their head out of their ass and developed a 275-300HP hatchback with realtime AWD and a standard 6MT, Subaru would see sales drop almost immediately. It's just that there's no other option in that price range. Sure, we all want an AWD Hatch/Turbo/6MT, but you can't get one so a sedan is the next best thing...
@marasco.official2 жыл бұрын
@@pondmonserfox they've explained it - they see a market opportunity. When you think about it, it seems smart idea, however, the car looks old, like from the 2005.... Styling won't get any good for reaching the new customers, and I think it's a huge deal these days, people want to be noticed.

The next gen STI does look pretty interesting as to what could be done. However, one thing that’s sort of disappointing to me is how Subaru is known to make some of the sexiest concepts, yet dull the production versions of the car down. Look up any one of Subaru’s concepts (namely the WRX Concept from 2013) and it looked nice and solidly proportionate. I still love my 2020, i think the looks overall went down, drive ability probably increased slightly but with no major updates to the trans/power output so I wouldn't consider the new generation much of an upgrade from the last, but if i didn't have my VA I could still see myself getting the 2022 because it's basicly the VA with the few gripes fixed + some plastic so it looks different. Interior looks more in line with the 2020s decade, however i still prefer the cool customizable top screen you can display your oil temp/boost%/mpg etc, with the touch screen for Maps and spotify and the physical knobs and bottons for the climate controls/buttwarmers. It's the perfect combination. The base model interior for the 2022 is atrocious, compared to the outgoing base model. My conclusion: Still a great car and choice for what we love about subaru, boxer engines and turbos and good suspension and AWD system. The looks will grow on everyone, it seems half of the Subaru community sees someone buy any generation subaru and goes "looks great throw some wheel arches and a lip kit on it and it'll be great!" and as soon as one comes from the factory with it everyone hates it. I'm not saying the backend looks good, the VA was perfect for the amount of plastic back there

When the last generation of WRX came out (Evo eye) I instantly fell in love, though I went for the BRZ cause I wanted a 2 door. But still a very nice car. This is... eh. The front end is nice, the hood scoop looks better, love the seats and the gauges. But I hate that plastic cladding, the entire rear end, and that huge IPAD.. terrible. Light steering is good for rally. It would be sensory overload to feel every surface imperfection on the stage.
@alexmartin-schael75562 жыл бұрын
Good comment. Also, I have been driving a 2022 WRX for a month and have not felt at all that it does not have a good steering. My car is still in the break-in period, so I am treating it gently, but feels pretty solid so far and sends on a lot of confidence. Definitely, the steering does not feel below anything in this price range (speacially if you value having AWD and a stick). I own a 2014 BMW M135i and the WRX is close to match and even superior in some respects.

I think what owners of this vehicle who were willing to take a chance on it will come to find is that it's an excellent daily driver with no rival. @AG-un7dz Жыл бұрын
I agree with most of what you said, but we should be happy that they still make the WRX. Car manufacturers are chomping at the bit to rid themselves of manual transmissions in the near term and do the same with gasoline engines in the medium to long term. I know there are still many that would buy a WRX that met your criteria but I believe Subaru is trying to simplify their supply chain and a niche offering isn't in the cards.
