I test drove both and went with the CX5 turbo. The interior height made the cabin seem more spacious. Both are a joy to drive and the turbo makes them fly and really fun to drive.

I test drove the 2022 CX-5 Turbo along side the CX-50 Non-turbo Premium plus and ended up liking the CX-50 more which was surprising to me. The CX-50 Turbo would definitely be my choice in the lineup. Here are a few things I noticed that were different from the CX-5 that not many have talked about (maybe these are part of the CX-30 but I cant confirm because I never tested that vehicle, but I know the 50 is based off that) - The side mirrors on the 50 are smaller than the 5 which gives less visuals around the vehicle, but blind spot monitoring felt more responsive in the 50 to make up for that. - The front dash length (instrument cluster to windshield) on the 5 felt more "squished" (think of a Pug's face) vs the 50 which felt more traditional - The controls on the 50 all felt easier to reach and more naturally positioned. in the 5 I felt I had to reach more to access control knobs even after moving the seat closer to the steering wheel - The tune function of the radio in the 5 was much harder to use than the duel control volume/tune knob in the 50 (possibly carried over from the 30?) - The 50 seats definitely "hugged" me better in sharp turns, taking a roundabout onramp at 30+ MPH in the 50 felt much more planted than the 5 (felt like I was slipping out of my seat at 28 MPH) - The HUD in the 50 was updated with better and sharper graphics. the 5 was very nice but the 50's HUD was next level - The noise in the 50 was quieter that the 5. in fact i was surprised when the rain hitting the roof sounded much softer in the 50 than the 5 (maybe due to the glass pano roof?) - The steering wheel grip in the 50 is more "egg" shape, with the apex of the curve facing you, while the 5 grip is more rounded - The ride quality was only slightly worse in the 50 but i chalk that up to the larger 20" rims vs the 19" rims on the 5. I think the tires were also overinflated since it had just come off the truck - Lane assist/departure was better at detecting drifting and correcting this in the 50 than the 5, both did good under wet rainy road conditions All in all, I will be picking up a CX-50 Turbo Premium trim when ones start to arrive at the dealerships around me. Hope this information helps anyone who is still on the fence.

I love my CX-5. It's been a great little SUV however the reason I am moving onto a CX-50 is the towing capacity. I recently picked up a pop-up and while it's under the 2000lbs limit of the CX-5 it's close (1713lbs) and I'd feel more comfortable with a bit more padding. Was originally looking at trucks until gas prices started shooting up. CX-50 gets me the tow capacity while still being relatively fuel efficient.

@@matsudakodo So I did end up getting a turbo premium CX-50. It was a nice and a lot of fun to drive however I ended up trading it in for an F150 a little over a month ago. Reason being is it was a little small for us. I think if it were just me and I was able to keep the back seats folded down then there would be a ton of room for gear. However with a dog and needing the seats up it felt cramped in the cargo area. Other reason I traded up was the towing. It's rated at 3500lbs however I had been reading a lot of stories of the engine blowing up and warranties being denied by Mazda due to towing. Apparently ( and this is just what I was told ) you are only supposed to tow short amounts of time such as 30 minutes and keep it around 55mph max. That does not work for me at all. I personally did not have any issues towing and I did tow once with it for over 30 minutes but the thought that I could potentially be stuck with the bill for replacing the engine on a vehicle I just paid over $40k was enough for me to let it go. I now have a 2022 F150 and could not be happier. It's got tons of room and the mileage also is not much worse than the CX-50 was. Now I regularly got around 28-32mpg with my CX-5. The 50 was getting upper teens in the city and low to mid twenties on the highway. Could be because of the turbo maybe? But my truck has a V8 and I am averaging 19mpg which while worse than the 50 isn't worse by much. Still I think the CX-50 is a nice vehicle but I don't think in reality it's going to do as much as they advertised it to do. At least for long. Maybe a couple of weekend trips sure but it's definitely designed to spend more of it's time on the pavement.

Excellent comparison. Personally, I would rather get CX-5 if used only around town as every day car. CX-50 would make sense for those with more active outdoor lifestyle because of more ground clearance as well as extra roof strength and I believe better towing.

You neglected to mention one of the biggest differences….. the CX50 has a cheaper torsion beam rear suspension whereas the CX5 has a multi-link independent rear suspension! That’s a huge difference and indicates Mazda was cutting costs when they designed the CX50.

I have a CX 30 with torsion beam and my son has the CX 5 which actually is not multi link but a derivative of a multi link in a way. I found them very similar in ride quality. Too many times people make assumptions on torsion beam rear suspensions not being good. Take a look underneath and tell me which version looks stronger. Torsion beam all the way.

Some differences I read about that are germane to me (old schooler); Yes more ground clearance, lower roof line so loading stuff on the roof is easier means there is less space between the roof and the floor with the 50. They addressed that by making the driving position less suvish and more car like. With both my former Honda Ridgeline and CRV I had the seat raised up high as I like the visability and stretched out legs. I don't like sitting on the floor of a car and peering through the steering wheel. I don't camp so what goes on the roof is irrelevant. Cup holders; advantage 50. Visability and responsiveness; the 5; interior quality and comfort; the 5. All will be verified when there are cars to drive but for me, I think my next car is the CX-5 Turbo. My wife and I will drive it a long time and happily.

The discussion not talked about is the the Toyota based hybrid platform availability on the CX50. Would have loved that on the CX 5 we have. Once on the hwy, the CX 5 loses its acumen of the 40-50 mph gas mileage (shown at 34-35 mpg on the screen) to about 29-30 mpg at 70 mph.

And honestly, over time I even grew to like the look of the 5 a bit more, though look wise I prefer the 30 which is kind of in between the two in looks, but smaller. Honestly I think they should just combine aspects of the 5 and 50 together, taking the best of both, into one model.

Very good review. I love the handling of the CX-50 at speed and the lower, wider stance is sweet. However the dimensions are tighter in my garage and like you say, it sacrifices in areas it shouldn't. It should have better seat and ride quality, and the door handles are a major let down compared to how you interact with them in the CX-5. I just can't see why I would pay the extra for it.

Ordered a CX-50 select, anticipated delivery is mid August. This is a direct replacement for a 07 Outback chosen over the new outback which has a "Fischer Price" interior. Choose it over the more available CX-5 due to the larger cargo area (defined by large dog) the "hockey puck" control for the infotainment system (I loathe most touch screens) and a preference for the CX-30 platform.
@Realistick

@@Realistick the sad part is I've been a Subaru loyalist for 20 years. The lower trims feel like they are made by Fisher-Price and don't get me started on the CVT. The CX-5 and the cx50 are just a lot closer to my trusty old outback in terms of functionality. Also looked at vehicles like the forester, the RAV4 and the escape and I was impressed just how much better the Mazda fit and finish was. I can see why some people would prefer a touch screen but once you figure out how to use the hockey puck you don't have to take your eyes off the road nearly as much. Thing you might consider doing in a video is to have a look at Mazda's really weird navigation system, that requires a $400 SD card even though you can hook your phone up and use that on the screen... It's kind of a bizarre design choice.
@Realistick
@Realistick 2 жыл бұрын
@@M167A1 the Outback base trim is comical in certain regards and the cvt truns off a lot of people, but I do have to add that the premium trim and up do have an upscale feel for the price, and the seats are super comfy. I agree that the mazda is much less frustrating, it easily has the upper hand on luxury compared to most others in the segment! I would like to try out the navigation but I can't remember ever actually using it. I'm not sure I've used a car with the SD card actually installed, it makes little sense to me unless you actually live where there is no cell reception.

I bought myself a cx-5 turbo 2022 about 3 weeks ago. Cx-50 didn't look appealing, reasons are: CX-5: better materials, comfy seats, cheaper by about 2800$ in similar trim, more cars in stock, made in Japan CX-50: better looking, touch display, pano-roof. I would only go for CX-50 if it was a hybrid with toyota powertrain. And I would also say biggest thing missing in both CX-5 and CX-50 is a good lane centering & steer assist for highway driving. You can get some steer assist in signature trim which only works at low speed, which is useless. Mazda really needs to improve here, since some competitors like Hyundai&Kia are making great highway steer assist., Toyota also has it.

CX50 is hard plastic 4) CX5 has soft touch surfaces on the tops of the rear door cards. The CX50 has hard plastic. Other differences are: 1) CX5 has rear seats that recline. CX50 does not. 2) CX5 rear seats fold 40/20/40. CX50 is 60/40. 3) Cx5 has covers for two little cubbies on the rear cargo area. The CX50 does not include covers. 4) Closing the doors on the CX5 sounds more solid than the CX50. I really have lost some respect for Mazda because of the CX50. It really feels like cost cutting. For me, the decision came down to the roominess of the backseat (I can sit behind myself in the cx-50, I couldn’t in the cx-5, passenger comfort is important for me), and I think the cx-50 looks way sharper and more handsome. I like the interior better, especially the terracotta leather. Makes me feel like I’m driving something special sitting in those seats. Nicer gauge cluster, too, plus the ventilated seats are a must. The cx-5 is elegant in its own right, and it’s a little faster and handles a little better (by a relatively minuscule amount, and tests show it), but the small backseat and the overall styling was a dealbreaker.

I cross-shopped both… and while I was initially drawn to the CX-50 because of its sexy coke bottle body shape (really is a looker)… after sitting in both and driving both I decided that I preferred the interior of the CX-5 (specifically the Polymetal Gray w/ red leather Carbon Edition (non-turbo) which I ended up getting) because it definitely felt more upscale and the seats were more comfortable. Also preferred the driving position of the CX-5 as well. The CX-50 felt more like a sport wagon than a SUV/CUV (which wasn’t a bad thing… it was cool in a different way) with its low slung seating and extended cargo area. But I was really looking for more a traditional SUV/CUV and the CX-5 just filled that role better for me. No wrong choice here… just what works for you. My CX-5 is a 2024 and the fact that it doesn’t have either i-Stop or cylinder deactivation was also a huge bonus. I hate stuff like that with a passion. That kinda stuff is designed to make bureaucrats happy, not buyers. It may have only been a supply chain issue that saved me from that junk on my CX-5, but I’m glad for it.😎

I bought a new 2021 Mazda CX-5. I believe the CX-50 has the same engine. It has burned engine oil from day one and getting progressively worse. I looked up and found a bulletin for my car to be repaired. I took it in and they agreed that my car fell under that bulletin according to the VIN but, that I had to wait for the engine light to come on. By my calculation that won't happen until one oil change after my warranty is up. I only have 15,000 miles on it. Worse yet is that the KZbin posts from Mazda or its dealerships take out negative reviews. Sleezy. I’ll come back and check to see if this channel does the same thing. I’d hate to take them off my list. Don't take a chance and buy Mazda’s. They don't stand by their products

Why won't they just fix it. Do they think I'm making it up? For what purpose? I'm an old man there's nothing in it for me. This was supposed to be my retirement car. The CX-5's that fall outside of the VIN's that burn oil are beautiful vehicles. I love everything about mine except for this problem. I'm sure you're CX-50 will be fine. What is the point in having two models with essentially the same size and mechanicals??? The 50 is nicer looking but they are so similar in every other way why bother?? Why not make one model and pass the cost savings on to the customer??? With all the money Mazda has in developing and producing the CX3 CX30 CX5 and CX 50 why wouldn't they make one small model and one midsize model and make them more affordable?? Honestly this segment confuses me because they are expensive for what you get and they really don't get great mileage so why not buy a real SUV that can actually tow something?? My wife has a CX5 turbo which is a nice enough vehicle but whenever we go anywhere other than around town we take my half ton pick up which is infinitely more comfortable and honestly doesn't use all that much more fuel seeing as the Mazda uses premium fuel where as my dinosaur V8 makes 400 hp on regular fuel. On hwy trips it might cost 10-20% more to drive the truck vs the CX5. My truck averages around 12L/100km combined city hwy towing etc and the Mazda gets around 10L/100 Km on average and has never towed anything. If you get into the throttle at all it doesn't get any better mileage than the truck. It has always boggled my mind that manufacturers can't make an small SUV that doesn't get way better mileage than a 5500lb 400hp truck that can tow 10000lbs
