I’ve owned two Priuses and I have this to say. Reliability was top notch. I used them as a taxi and put about 70,000 miles a year in them and never had an issue. Also. If you do use them in that fashion you realize it’s not much more in cost to fill with gas than it is to charge a Tesla. Recently drove my Prius across the US alongside a friend with a Tesla. Cost to charge was 300ish and the Prius was 350ish. Prius didn’t have to stop as often nor did it take as long when it did need a fill up. Not many people will use them in that way. I personally think that for my use hybrid is still the way
@kenbob1071
@kenbob1071 2 жыл бұрын
I own both. Comparing SuperCharger costs on your trip to gas costs isn't exactly fair. Most charging is done at home at less than 1/2 the cost of supercharging. If you're using it as a taxi, you'll charge it up at home every night and it'll be ready to go in the morning --no need to stop off at a gas station like the Prius. On long trips I usually stop for a rest, coffee, bathroom break, lunch, etc., so to let the car charge for 20-30 minutes isn't a big deal.

That long sweeping front end with a very shallow angle on a windshield gives it an incredible profile. This is such a radical departure from earlier Priuses. Toyota did an amazing job with the update on this generation. And the term "Car Enthusiast" is sometimes vague. Often it refers to people who like exotic, pretty, high performance (or all of the above) vehicles, but I think you can also be a car enthusiast for just _liking cars_ in general. And the reality is the vast majority of people are not buying expensive, high performance cars, nor can the majority of people afford electric cars yet. Most people just want an affordable, _reliable_ car, and that's where the Prius fits in. Making it look good and have more power will probably help them sell more of them to people who were on the fence about it because of lack of power and questionable looks before. Smart move on Toyota's part.

A car with a CVT transmission will always be boring, and that’s what you usually get in a Toyota. Because their customers want to drive slowly and have a good fuel efficiency. My late wife in Australia had a used 2003 Prius Series Two until she passed away in 2015. We both loved that car. I remember we drove it from Newcastle New South Wales to Ballarat in Victoria, a distance of some 1100 km, and we refueled only once. It also performed well on another trip to Victoria when we went to Melbourne for the Melbourne Cup in 2013, and drove the Great Ocean Road, and returned home via northwest Victoria and midwestern New South Wales. On both trips we averaged about 4.5 L/100 km. @@user-cv8gm2vx2v that's not really valid, you need infrastructure built by government to get gas too. @@hikkamorii government built infrastructure? Like what? Oil companies build refineries, service stations, operate truck companies etc... Apart from the roads, what government built infrastructure does an ICE car need? To charge an EV from solar, you're going to need a very large solar array. And plenty of time. An average house array is 5-7 kW. Many EVs have batteries in the 50 to 100kW/h range. So more than a day or even two days to fully charge, (you usually estimate 5 hours full solar on a sunny summer day) and that's if you're not running any other appliances. BTW, I've lived off grid from (mostly) solar for the past 12 years, so I'm well aware of solar's capabilities and shortcomings.

I owned a 2006 Prius that had 215k miles when I sold it and it still ran great. Best car I ever owned. I'm a car enthusiast but love the practicality of the Prius and it's reliability, it just goes and goes with minimal maintenance might I add. People say the Prius is slow but it's always been more than adequate acceleration for day to day driving. You just have to really lay into it to get it to go. I did go to a Rav4 Prime and if you go back to the Prius yeah you'll notice it's slow haha. But the R4P has really impressive power. I miss the go kart like handling, with the right set of wheels and tires it's a great handling car. One thing I won't miss from my 2G Prius is the ride quality. It was awful the Rav4 prime is so much more quieter and smoother withe large wheels. The ground clearance is nice too. I actually lifted mine slightly because it was scraping on everything. Anyway the new one looks great but I went with the bigger car it's even more practical.

The best reason back in the day, before other EVs came out, for buying a Prius was every now and then I would have to take the Galveston Ferry. When you drove your car on the ferry you had to turn it off so that the crew didn't die of car exhaust. BUT Priuses were the only car back in the day that you could keep on and still run your AC. This was REALLY important in Texas during the summer and they were really popular cars in the area.

I've never owned a Prius, but looking at the cost of a battery replacement, it's fairly comparable to any major work that needs to be done on a car. Somewhere between $2,000-$4,000 after driving for 100k-150k miles. When taking into account similar priced repairs typical of most non-toyota cars within that mile range and comparing cost of gas vs electric, it's a pretty reasonable purchase for a commuter. Not saying I would buy one, but it isn't bad. For some, an older Nissan leaf might be a more compelling option if you aren't planning on driving more than 100 miles a day for a commute.

I’ve got a 2019 Camry SE as a commuter car and average 35.2 mpg. I don’t think there’s any point in owning a Corolla anymore since it’s smaller, has more road noise, a 6 speed transmission rather than an 8 speed, and still gets close to the same gas mileage as the Camry. When you look at the numbers, you really don’t save that much more by trying to go to a hybrid or getting a lightweight Economy car. With a fully electric, you might break even after 10 years. But that could be changing in the future if they are able to get the price down.

My second Prius was a 2010, and it had the touring package. That meant lower profile tires, quicker steering, and more. My lifetime average was 47 MPG over 118,000 miles. That was considering that the Bridgestone tires it had lowered the mileage about 2 MPG compared to the stock tires. That is ALSO considering that we took several major (4,000 miles or more) road trips and drove 30K - 40K miles at or above 80 MPH. Contrary to what a lot of people seem to think, the Prius is NOT slow on the interstate. There are also people who have the mistaken idea that the Prius is small. NOT! Our 2010 had more passenger room than a friend's 2012 CAMRY. Reliability? Oil changes, wiper blades, and a couple of light bulbs was our expenses.

Doug noted the big drop in Prius sales in 2017. That was the same year the Chevy Bolt and Tesla Model 3 came out. I'm a Prius owner and I expected to own my Prius EV by now, but Toyota seems to be at least 5 years behind their competition. My next car is going to be an EV and if Toyoda keeps pretending Hydrogen is a viable technology and customers like me want another hybrid, its seems unlikely that EV will be a Toyota. I think he's done a huge disservice to the company by focusing on the wrong technology and I think Toyota is going to be in big financial trouble in the next few years.

In modern car design it is, in my old truck the wipers just heated with the windshield because they where right on top of it. Modern cars have them tucked down in a trench below the hood/dash line for aerodynamics where they are often removed from the heated area of the window. It's like bug fixing software to a degree, you solve one problem and inadvertently create another. Also another pet peeve of mine with the trench in modern car design. It collects snow and really doesn't like to let it go. This has been true for both Subarus my wife has owned, the Chevy she owned, my Jeep and now her Hyundai. If you don't want your wiper motors worn prematurely you have to dig all that snow out from around the stalks, by hand as I've not encountered a snow brush small enough to do that.

I'm really starting to realize how good of a value these newer gen toyotas are. I personally always drove 1 of the 3 German cars (audi, merc, bmw) and as most car people know, those cars are riddled with options and add-ons. I recently swapped cars with my friend for a day because he needed a "ballet-able" car for his work related event (essentially a car someone can sit comfortably in the back seat) so I had a opportunity to go around in a 2022 Corolla Sport while he drove my Audi A8L. Now putting aside the "luxury", since the Corolla wasn't for that, I'm amazed for how much of the stuff was standard and for its price.

1) Take a look at EVmatch. They're the most cost effective commercial EV charger and you may find some in your neighborhood on their map. Owners are usually happy to have you parking overnight to charge and while they can set their own rates, most people set them lower than other commercial chargers. 2) Look for local EV Charger installers to work with as a tenant advocate so you can approach your landlord about EV charging. I used to sell chargers and it was frequently a tenant who would reach out to us about charging. We would come up with a plan and the tenant would help us get a meeting with the landlord to explain how they can make money with an EV charger.

Another awesome video from Doug. It seems that in the last year that your videos have been trimmed down to 25 minutes of less, even for launch editions. It's not just because you don't break down the Doug Scores anymore. The content in general has been noticeably trimmed down. I'm assuming you're striving to make more efficient videos without leaving out the important details. Anyway, I was just wondering if that was the reason why your videos have been shorter as of late? I guess I just miss the long, drawn out videos that I need a lunch to eat while I immerse myself into the content. 😁

@@JoeOnaBoat I had a feeling that the "algorithm" had something to do with it. The plugs for Cars and Bids take up a minute of runtime and I guess without the breakdown of the Doug Score, it offsets the plug and allows for more video content. But not by much. So it's kind of a wash. I just miss the longer videos that brought in more of the quirkier side of Doug's personality. When I would see a 45-40 min time on the video I knew it was going to be epic. But those were usually reserved for the cars that deserved the extra attention for praise or for ridicule. 😆 The only aspect of his production that I wish he would expand upon would be the driving experiences. A mix of seeing Doug's reactions, which are great, with different perspectives while he's driving, kinda like his early videos, would be really cool. And if he reviews an off road vehicle or a race car, I would love to see him take them off road or to a track. A video with Doug taking a TRX or a 4 squared off road, or a McLaren P1 GTR to Willow Springs would be crazy cool! His viewership would go through the roof!

You made an excellent point showing the twisted mental condition of people thinking that speed is some necessary option in life. Just brain dead people these type people to think they can have a happy life unless they jump off a cliff and with a parachute or bunchie jump

That is the first Prius that has made me feel anything but apathy. The design is magnificent, and the panel gaps are so small I honestly thought that it _was_ a coupe.

Rav4 Prime needs to be rolled out everywhere. Availability and dealer markups is nuts.

I havent seen this in person, but I have to say... on video the exterior of this looks really nice. Kudos to the designers at Toyota for this one. If I was in the market for a similar car for around-city driving, I'd definitely consider this.
