People like bekele, Farah were very fast in their careers. However, fast runners may not last long because they are pron to enjuries. For example cheptegeibis declining, Elaine and her counterpart from Jamaica also are facing difficults.

Cheptegei just set the Olympic record for the 10km lol I do sort of agree with you though. A lot of runners across all distances do set their pbs in their early to mid 20s. At 27 I'd say cheptegei is unlikely to break his 5 or 10 km records. He's still not that far off his top level though.

It's really sad that Kipchoge did not finish in the olympic marathon in Paris :( For me, it would have been a great moment and a succes to see him finish the race, even in last place. It looked like he had problems with his hips. Anyways, I hope we'll see him run again, and at least finish a marathon! Would be a very sad retirement otherwise... I'm very pleased about Bekele finishing the marathon in the 39/81. He is 42 years old, and still able to compete on the very elite level! I think that both Kipchoge and Bekele would have been able to compete better on a flat course, but it is what it is :p Huge respect for all of the competitors, and especially congrats to Tola, Abdi and Kipruto. And I'm also very impressed by Akasaki, who came in in 6. place! It was an incredible marathon, the crowd was crazy, as well as the difficulty of the course! I wish all the competitors the best and still hope to see Bekele and Kipochge run a few more marathons, even if they probably won't be able to get to the podium.

The old head in me wants to see an epic Bekele vs Kipchoge duel that matches the insanity of what has been this Olympic Games (which has been nothing short of incredible) for the gold but if I’m a betting man, I factor in Kipchoge hasn’t run well on hilly courses and also Bekele isn’t the same guy that bounced back in 2019 to run 2:01:41. He’s run 2:04 low twice this year which is amazing for his age but he’s not the guy anymore. I’d probably have to go with Tola or Kipruto, as much as I don’t want to say that. I would love to see Bekele have the ultimate comeback and win that marathon gold and I would also love to see Kipchoge be the first to win 3 Olympic marathon gold medals (consecutively). But I just don’t think it’ll happen. I hope the running gods prove me wrong. I hope we get the showdown us running nerds always dreamed.

Want to know where all the people who tried to tell me I didn’t know what I was talking about when I said that Kipchoge wouldn’t run well in France are? He can’t run in bad conditions (heat was a factor) and can’t run on elevation. All of his losses in the last few years have come over hills and unfavourable conditions and today was no exception. Since 2016 kipchoge has only run well on virtually flat courses. He’s the goat there is no debate there, but he’s old and this was another example of his age hindering his versatilely.

His losses are London bad weather, Boston elevation and bad weather and Tokyo (bad marathon). Recently he hasn’t done well if it’s not flat Berlin. He’s a technical runner who thrives on rhythm. Hard to do that when you’re older and on hills. This 6-7 year track record and the style of course Paris was made it clear the course wouldn’t play to his strengths and they didn’t.
