So while the thought of a automatic trans makes many of us sad and/or sick to our stomachs.... Having the option for it opens the door for a lot of people. I've been driving and tuning Japanese cars since the early 90's. Along the way i have met some really cool and passionate car enthusiasts who were unable to drive cars with a manual trans because of different disabilities or health issues. If you've ever been to large car events or SCCA race weekends I'm sure you've noticed at least one person in a wheelchair. Having been to a dozen or so SEMA shows over the years, I've met quite a few car fans who were either in wheelchairs or Jazzys etc- who built some really cool cars that were equipped with auto transmissions out of necessity. One of my closest friends has MS and has lost movement in both legs, but owns a number of JDM cars that HAD to be anto trans in order for him to drive them. He actually sent me a text with the link to this video LOL!

I used to be all "manual is better/best". All my cars have been 5 speeds. But then I started driving my wife's wrangler....and I could turn my music up and just drive. I couldn't really do that in my cobalt ss. I have realized the benefits of a good auto. I really like the golf transmission, I don't really need to use the paddles, just stomp and go. All while having the fender sound system pushing some bangers.

As a 50yr old dude with a bad left knee, this appeals to me more than the manual. I wouldn't track it...well I wouldn't track enough to worry about the car being an auto. If I wanted a track car it wouldn't be this it would be something less expensive and RWD. I live in Denver and do a lot of driving in traffic and I REALLY want a WRX STI but the shifting kills my knee so I'm in a Lexus IS350 AWD. Its a great car with power and reliability. Now that this car has the auto I may be looking for a new car.

Being a 8 speed, i figured the gearing would be different (like you said you were in the same gear through a corner in both the auto and manual) enough to make advantage of extra gears and having the ratios closer to help the engine stay in peak power.

If I bought a GR, I would probably want manual just for the fun of it, but for my Corolla Hatch SE daily I got a manual just for the convenience. I could see a market for this for people who DO actually want to use a GR as a daily. My hatch is sportier than most with some mods, but I am really happy I got the auto due to driving in stop and go traffic and on the interstate mostly. Having that option for a fast daily that can be both a grocery getter and a track car for somebody that wants to do that makes sense.

At the end of the day, Toyota is a business, and if offering an auto helps it sell more cars then that's great. Still having a manual to pick from should keep the enthusiasts happy. I can understand losing the 'exclusivity' of a manual only line up will upset the fan boys, but as long as there's the option for either transmission they shouldn't complain. Don't like auto? Then don't buy that variant.

The 10speed mustang is a dream to drive honestly… it’s got the ability to drift still, it’s faster in the straight line, it’s easier on the legs and hips idk to be honest I grew up a manual guy but these new 8-10 speed autos are awesome for the street.

It actually doesn’t have a torque converter, ironically. I watched a video on the transmission and how it’s built, there’s no funny looking torque converter. It’s really a series of clutches that have super close ratios much like the manual. In actuality the first gear of the auto and the manual is the same ratio, but gears 2 through 6 are actually closer ratios than the manual, and the last 2 gears are for high speed cruising.

Not sure how it is over in the US market but here in Aus the i30N and Elantra N have been dominating performance car sales (auto and manuals). The only things you see at track days and mountain runs are N cars. Why though? Because the price to performance ratio + track warranty has sold them. The GR and Type R are too expensive to compete in Aus. What a shame as I’d love to see more competition, but it’s fair to say Hyundai has won the hearts of most enthusiasts down under.

@@E46_wagonlover Keep in mind these modern autos aren't the slush boxes of yesterday. Modern autos and DCTs shift so much faster than any human can, and they don't have too worry about hitting that dreaded money shift. As someone did with a GR, and ended up with a $14k shop bill. Honestly it's pretty cool what Gazoo cooked up here. This new auto not only shifts fast, but it has a system similar that Porsche has in the new 911 PDK, it detects when you're going into corners, and adjust the shift points to maximize your exit speed.

They should have taken the 10 speed from the Accord 2.0 Turbo and stuck that in there as an option along with the base car. Some of the Honda faithful hate when I say that but Acura is a luxury brand, most people who buy a car under a luxury brand don’t want a manual, they’re choosing to avoid a large section of the market that would be interested in buying one but won’t cause there’s no auto option and they don’t want to step up to something larger like a TLX. Why they also stuck a CVT in the base Integra instead of a regular or even a DCT style auto makes no sense to me.

@@original__gmebvyDoubtful. As the masses already look at the ITS as expensive. Add in the now discontinued Accord 10 speed and raise the price at all it's simply not a great buy relative to an S3/S4 or m340i. Since the ITS lacks so many basic features like a sun roof, memory seats, cooled seats, among dozens of others yet will be spanked as a touring car (might handle slightly better), and definitely has no ability for AWD. And yes, at that price range of mid to high $50k for a relatively loud lift back it makes little sense to design in the auto to sell maybe 3000 units a year.

Until it spontaneously bursts into flames, and Toyota voids your warranty because you exceeded 80mph. SMH... yes, it's a thing. Look it up.

Stop calling these accessible/affordable. They are not. The target audience cannot afford them. Same goes for the Type R.

$50k plus possible markup. Easy pass for me. Plenty of used cars for that price that are just as fun to drive.

I don't know if it could fit on the Civic, but the ZF 9-speed they use would make it a lot faster.
