Purchased a new '96 XLT AWD 5.0L ... kept through 2017 and now my nephew has it. Toyota level reliability with literally the only failure over the years being the water pump. Never a problem with transmission (4R70W), the 302, or the all mechanical full time AWD Borg Warner 4404 transfer case

Doesn't it just figure they perfect the Windsor V8, keep it for these SUV and Aussie cars until 2001 and cancel it. The 4.6 was ok but, never had the tq or the avaliable aftermarket mods.

This brings back memories! I owned a 97 with the venerable 5.0 and it was awesome. Bought it in rough shape and fixed it up and got it running real nice. As time went on, it got to where a lot of things were not working, but it was a beater anyway and I always enjoyed taking it on trips to the store or just from point a to b as long as I didn’t need AC.

Same story here, bought a beater 1996 5.0 XLT around 12 years ago - the drivetrain was amazing. This little truck could go through anything! Terrible HVAC, heater barely worked, I replaced the AC Evap coil in the dash, it worked a while. Finally got tired of dealing with it, but was my towing / winter disaster vehicle....lol.

I had a ‘96 once. Really loved those seats! That round piece in the front is actually adjustable by sliding it in and out. Also has the power inflatable lumbar and even the side bolsters can be inflated. I’m sure all that is normal by today’s standards but back then it was a pretty big deal.

This was a great throw back, being a Ford tech during those late 90s and early 2000 years. The engine in this was a 4.0L push rod which was a much more reliable engine than the 4.0L SOHC which always had timing chain problems. (To fix the right side chain the motor had to be pulled). I also replaced hundreds of FIRESTONE WILDERNESS TIRES AS PER THE RECALL. They were great SUVs when new, but they did not last the long haul. However I made alot of money repairing them. Please come back soon Bill, your reviews are 2nd to none.

I bought one new in 1997 when I got my first boat and needed a tow vehicle. An XLT, with the old five liter V-8 with All Wheel Drive. Paid $26,000 well optioned. It was a great, trouble-free truck for the six years and 80,000 miles. I was so sorry I traded it for a 2003 version because my wife wanted heated leather seats (it, unlike the ‘97, had many problems. I had Goodyear tires, kept them properly inflated, and never had a problem. I can’t recall a single repair, only maintenance. Your review is spot on. Very few survived because they were used. I wish I still had mine.

I had a fully loaded 2001 Explorer Sport 2-door for several years and loved it. It had the SOHC 4.0 and had plenty of power (215 HP) and was fun to drive. I'm also one of those Ford guys that love my keyless entry buttons, which my 2018 F-150 still has. They're convenient, like when I'm just out in the driveway but don't have my keys and need to get in my truck. I can also leave my truck running while I run into the local stop and rob for a pack of smokes and still get back in, which the remote key buttons won't do if it's running. Anyway, another great video, Bill! Get the hell out of Florida. It's hot enough in Colorado already, I can't even imagine the humidity down there. No thanks.

I had a 97 V6, fit and finish was very impressive. Ran great but you could watch the gas gauge drop as you drove down the Thruway at 72 mph. My neighbor has a 98 he inherited from his elderly mother that is like new.

I have a first gen XLT (92) in decent shape despite it being one of my winter cars. It's a gas hog but in the salt belt you don't see them anymore so it brings compliments every time I have it out. I put slightly lower tires (205's verses 235's) on it and the difference in handling is amazing.

Yes, multiple factors were involved with the whole Explorer/Firestone roll over issue. A major one I think had to do with the steering sensitivity of these Explorers. I routinely drove this generation Explorer for a while and realized they put the steering reflexes of a Focus in these things. At highway speeds these SUV's were very twitchy.

The tire situation was due to the door card recommending something around 20 PSI in the tires and when they'd go on highways at highway speeds, heat up and explode. Rollovers were usually failures

The first-generation Explorer (I owned one) had the Twin-Traction Beam suspension used in the pickup line for years. In the Bronco II and the Explorer, the TTB was prone to poor handling and rollovers because it was too softly sprung. It also made it eat front tires. I replaced the front springs on both the Bronco II and Explorer with heavier duty springs, and added truck-type tires. That solved their handling problems. The 4.0L V6 was a low-horsepower and not very fuel efficient engine, but it would run for 200K-300K miles if it was maintained properly. Part of the reason that the Explorer sold so well was Ford's gigantic dealer network. Back then, just about every town of over 2,000 residents in the U.S. had a Ford dealer. I took my Explorer over some really tough trails successfully. The current generation Explorer is, as a friend described it, a Ford Taurus station wagon with AWD--it's no off-roader.

I was leaving high school, circa 1997 in what could have been this exact Explorer. It's such a rare color...and I was well into the intersection in the left turn lane with two oncoming lanes facing me. The light turned, and it looked clear. I was 16, and lacked the understanding that people just run red lights to save 42 seconds on their daily commute, so the right front quarter of this beautiful Explorer that looked exactly like this one here, was destroyed by a Ford Tempo, with a driver who probably still runs red lights to this day. When the flatbed was backing it into the dealer service center, he ran it right into the garage door, shattering the back window. Just seeing this Explorer brings back a lot of memories from before the divorce when I had a family...and I want it!

We had a 2000 XLS 4x4 in Wedgewood blue with a tan cloth interior. 4.0L V6 (not the SOHC version) with the 5 speed ZF automatic. The engine was a dog and sounded like a diesel. We only had it for 3 years and 30k miles as a lease. Never gave us trouble and I wished i bought it. Later in life i learned that ZF trans would likely have grenaded although I was impressed with it for the few years we had it. Even though it was slow and crude, i kind of liked it and thought it would have served us well if i had bought it.

I had one of those door combination lock thingy's on my 02 Continental too. Was kind of a cool, if not gimmicky feature -until one day it wasn't. An electrical short that killed my battery had developed inside the locking mechanism -and so the damn car had to be towed to the dealer to be disconnected! Where they of course offered to sell me a replacement unit for "only $525", which after I finally stopped laughing out loud I flat out refused! You are absolutely right as an historian. The 80's Jeep Cherokee started the SUV age and you've proved that the Explorer capitalized on it. The Firestone tires were not made for women. They were made by men who did not anticipate underinflated, overloaded wagons bombing down the highways in summer heat.

Currently in the pre 2/98 1998 5.0 XLT. I’ve had a 96 as well, and an ‘01 4.0 XLT. Love these rigs. I daily the 98 60miles a day round trip and still get 20mpg at 173k miles. 2nd Gen is one of the best vehicles ever made in my opinion. I’ve owned Grand Cherokees, Blazers, and other half ton trucks… this is the best all around vehicle I’ve ever had. Only way it could be even close to better is if they would’ve 5.0/4.6ed the Sport Trac

I have a 97' SPORT 4x4 (2 door), 135k, garage kept, great condition, zero rust, never been in a crash. The 4.0L OHV with 165hp is truley gutless!!!, 5 speed automatic transmission, shifts good. The only problem is I have to pull the engine to change the rear main seal, trans. front seal, oil filter adapter o-ring, LIM gaskets, and the head gaskets because they leak coolant to the outside of the block. It still runs great though, also needs tires since they are 11 years old, I dont drive anymore, at least not untill I fix the head gaskets.

Have 3 of this generation that we still use daily for rural mail delivery in the Northland..With righteous maintenance we have found them to be the most tough and reliable choice we have used.. Most lasting to around 300 to 350k miles.. Which for a stop and go all day long in sun snow and rain is quite amazing.. just wish could find more with no rust.. One tip..ALWAYS run synthetic trans oil with these for trouble free results..

The first gen. Explorer came out in 1990 as a 1991 model. I had one. Got fed up with recalls and traded it for a late year '93 and keep it for 13 years. You are right as this is the gen that Ford took the Explorer from being an off road vehicle to a modified wagon grocery getter.

Before my family got our '96 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer Edition, it was used as a work truck, so it wasn't kept in great shape. It runs and that's what mattered to us. We only got it for $200 and is, after several years of having it, our backup vehicle. It was my primary ride when I was still in high school (just graduated).

I had a 1st generation 1993 Ford Explorer 4 door Eddie Bauer 4x4 i bought used in 1993 with 20k miles, had over 120k miles until 2003. Then had a 3rd generation 2002 4 door Ford Explorer XLT 4x4 I bought used in 2003 with 20k miles, had until 2018 with over 90k miles. Then bought a 2005 Chevy Tahoe LS 4 door 4x4 with 5.3v8 trailer towing package with 24k miles garage kept. Glad to have larger engine no cylinder shutdown etc and truly built on a truck frame

Bill, if you live in a swamp (Florida), it is going to get muggy, especially in summer time. Its just how it is, in a swamp. As for the wild life, I guess you have been spared the intense stuff so far, like the gators, the eagles and the anacondas, but they will come, so, best make the most of while going is good. As for the car reviews, awesome, especially given the climate and wildlife interventions, truly impressive. Don't stop, its impressive.

These were effectively the Country Squire of the 90s. Although, if you had multiple children and you needed both 4x4 and towing capability (and you didn’t mind filling up a 42 gallon tank), the Suburban was definitely the way to go. Go big or go home.

There was the Expedition and Excursion. As long as you stuck with the 5.4L 2V or the 7.3 PSD and the 4R100 trans it was pretty bulletproof. The V10 and 3v were junk and the 4.6 was too small.

@@hendo337 Not back then. Expedition came out in ‘97, and the Excursion in ‘00. And, with the exception of an Excursion with a 7.3, I’d still take a Tahoe/Yukon/Suburban (either GMT400 platform or GMT800 platform) over either of those. Better engines, more comfortable (the seats in the 95-99 full size GM trucks/SUVs are my absolute favorite), parts are everywhere, etc. As a side note, I don’t think of these as SUVs. I call them “tragons” - truck wagons. Because that’s what they are, really. An XJ Cherokee is an SUV. The Explorer in the video is an SUV. A Toyota 4Runner is an SUV. These full size rigs - especially the Excursion - are too long and too heavy for me to call them “SUVs”. And remember, the Suburban predates the term SUV by decades.

I sold, financed, and even reposessed so many of these 2nd gen Explorers. Back during the last recession these were arguably the most common buy-here pay-here vehicles in the USA. They were actually a great fit for that time in American history. Durable. Easy to work on (except for the timing chains). They guzzled gas but for a few years prices were reasonable and buying parts for these was as easy as could be. Great car for then. Not so much now.

I still daily drive a 2000 Ford Explorer Limited. 254,000 miles. It has a single overhead cam V6 5 speed auto. Best car I’ve ever owned. Had to replace the steering rack last year.

I had a 1994 Explorer xlt and it had 400k on it when it was written of by a red light runner! Miss it big time. I had the Michelin LTXs on it and it saved my life on a road trip from Winnipeg to London, Ontario. We were on number 2 going east from North Dakota into Michigan and hit a construction zone with a 4" lip on the roadway. We hit it at around 65 miles an hour and everything in the vehicle hit the roof, fortunately I didn't lose control and we came to a rest stop and I took a quick look around as we cleaned up the interior. No damage to the tires and everything looked alright. So we pressed on and completed our trip as if nothing ever happened. Six months later I had the auto-hubs fail and replaced them with manual lockers, which is something Ford should have done in the first place! 1994 was the last year without airbags and that is why I bought it! A mother with children coming home from a school function was hit head on by some drunkards driving out from the bar at Petersfield, Manitoba..the idiots in the car were killed on the spot and the mother and all children survived! That speaks volumes to someone looking for a safe vehicle!

We had a white 96' pretty much optioned like that one and that thing was bulletproof,,, 7 years and a 160000 miles and the only real problem I can remember was the right front caliper was sticky and it was pulling and heated up and so forth and had to be replaced around 40000 miles, that was it...

Obv Ford was following Volvo's lead with the 850 of 1992 with the integrated baby seat in the back. Always kinda liked this gen of Explorer looks wise anyway even as someone who lives in Scotland and doesn't normally drive on roads that suit these big jeep style vehicles, although we did have a Cherokee diesel many years ago. Moms had a '95 Exploder and every time she took it to the Ford dealership to get the oil changed or anything done to it, they always told her that she needed new tires and would put a new set on the truck! She had that truck for 2 years and we never put a set of tires on it!

From what i remember the firestone tires couldnt handle the heat of the south and would fail. The explorers were prone to rollovers after a tire blows and there was many fatalities.

Loved that Explorer. I had the ‘95 and ‘98 Eddie Bauer Editions. I remember getting 1 or 2 pieces of Eddie Bauer luggage shipped home after the purchase. Did have some issues with the Teflon grease on the steering shaft on the ‘95 and HVAC system on the ‘98 but overall loved them. Can’t wait for the Eldo!! Thanks Bill.
