Excellent instruction, Brandon. Very inspiring too. Disability doesn't mean inability, it means adaptability - which you ably demonstrate. Keep up the good work!

If you can take the sideguards off your chair, they are a useful shield/weapon.

Grappling arts like BJJ and wrestling can be really helpful for wheelchair bound people for defense. Getting in close and breaking limbs or choking people unconscious is great for self defense.

What will you do if the opponent is attacking from behind?
@theadaptiveone5 жыл бұрын
It depends. What time of rear attack are you speaking of? being grabbed? Shoved from the chair? A combo of the two?
@kotonohakatsura69305 жыл бұрын
@@theadaptiveone I meant the combo of the two. This sounds the most interesting to me :).

I'm disabled and teach self defense with my own style this is good and handy tactics but consider weapons people and I mean legal carry options Bear Repellent is legal carry and almost as good as mace but projects more powerfully with a larger chemical impact, if threatened act feigning a medical issue, then hit the person or persons with that in the face it will turn the tide fast 99% of the time. Knives in most states if under four inches are legal hidden carry those are good. Tasers are good. Since running isn't practical expect to need to make sure the party cannot hurt you before withdrawing with superior force and harm. Call 911 asap you are clear. And if you use a power wheelchair its a weapon strap in and learn to use it ram, run over ankles and hands, turn and back into the person, grab them and use the chair as added weight and power for a takedown and of course retreating. In short fight dirty the law considers us less able so using more force and being more lethal is an option if you need to end the persons life. (Note if they want just money give it to them, stuff can be replaced, if you are at risk then people practice and train with skills in hand to hand fighting and with weapons of all kinds.

Yes, he’s much bigger than you, but he’s not fighting back. I can’t imagine any of what you did working against a fighting opponent, scratching him while he’s in a good position for uppercuts is a really bad idea, jumping on him without him purposely falling on the ground leads you into a clinch -once again, uppercuts-. The defence position doesn’t cover the sides of your head and leaves your whole body free to get attacked a hit to your liver is enough for a knockout too. This is an old video, but please make sure your opponent is seriously fighting back when practicing, because to go from this really controlled and slowed down simulation to really getting attacked is quite a jump. I don’t have a disability, so I can’t really know what works or doesn’t for your body, but if gaps in your guard, takedowns and speed are not something that can be fixed, keep your passion for the sport in the gym but have some pepper spray available for the streets.
