The 41.6 of RL-15 looks good....take the Varget and go fertilize the lawn with it 😉. JRB did his whole series on muzzle devices and they will change your groups and point of impact so not suprised the results changed. I really should build a 308.

Varget is good, Cranky. Don't build a 308. Take up knitting instead. Its less frustrating and it isn't illegal in New Jersey yet.

I found that with the AR , a light factory crimp can make a world of difference . The bolt slamming the round home is fierce on an AR , like a kinetic bullet puller . It can change the bullet OVL and cause flyers . Changing nothing else but adding a light crimp , cut some groups in half for me . Good luck .
@TinManReloading
@TinManReloading 2 жыл бұрын
I havent tried loading 308 without a light crimp. You may be onto something though. I've never checked for setback after chambering rounds... Thanks James!
@jamespollard1670

@@TinManReloading What it does is jam the bullet into the lands when the bolt is released . Far enough that if you remove an unfired round , it will pull the bullet from the case . That is how I found this out . I then went in the house and crimped the cases and tried again , The groups shrunk in half then . So I kind of found out by accident . lol . So depending on the neck tension and how far away it is from the lands , the bullet can move all over .

@@Johnny-jr2lq Measure the OVL before and after slamming the bolt home . Check it a few times . An AR needs a crimp , IMO . How much crimp , depends on the sizing stem you use .

I also want to add that with all my 308 Winchester rifles 2650 to 2700 fps gives me the best accuracy out of all of them bolt guns and autos. So far the only factory projectiles I have used was the Sierra 168gr BTHP Matchkings. I also went through that consistency issue probably myself. However it was with cast projectiles never with factory projectiles.
@TinManReloading
@TinManReloading 2 жыл бұрын
Ill keep that in mind. I noticed my charges were kind of on the lower end. What barrel length are you running? This one is an 18" barrel. I dont think I got above 2500
@Johnny-jr2lq
@Johnny-jr2lq 2 жыл бұрын
@@TinManReloading 20” but apparently in 308 the difference between 20” and 18” is negligible. I probably should have just went with a 18” but no biggie. I don’t have any experience with the powders you are running. But the ones I have used so far are H4895,AR comp,I had 1 pound of Benchmark but to be honest I wasn’t really excited with it. I have 50 cartridges loaded up with it but I’m thinking about pulling em down. I can get WAY better numbers with the H4895. Honestly TinMan try the CFE223 you will be satisfied with it I know powders are hard to come by but if you can get your hands on something in the burn rate of the ones I mentioned your accuracy will become more consistent.

As soon as life settles down for me again, I'll be getting back to my .308 testing, and I'll be jumping into 6.5 Creedmoor testing, too. But mine is all bolt guns, and I don't have an AR10 platform. I'm more of a "Shoot right or I'll turn you into a golf club" kinda guy 🤣 It's possible, but I dont think so. I checked the screws and they're all good. Yes, free float handguard. My swivel stud mount is kinda close to my gas block, but I dont think the barrel is whipping enough to hit. Its probably a good 3/16 or 1/4" away from touching the gas block.
