This is definitely the best part of the film. I've re-watched this scene many times and the part where the two men see the note for the first time still gets me. Then the catharsis of the families finding out their loved ones are alive is amazing. Also, those two women (who hate each other) hugging made me laugh out loud when I first saw it.

It's the best part of the film. Still gets me every time. Imagine seeing the note for the first time after nearly giving up. I love the reactions of the two guys behind the main actors as they read the note too.

Spectacular scene, probably the most monumental of the movie - and of the real event. A bigger deal than when they were finally pulled out, as it was at this point that the people on the surface knew the miners were alive, and the miners knew they'd eventually be rescued no matter what it took. One question though - was the light shining through the drill in any way realistic, or just cinematic effect? I'm guessing no light would have come through, as the drill is full of mud for lubrication and cooling.

You make a good point about the light

They may have put a light on it, for the camera

@@arianebolt1575 There wouldn't have been a camera on the drill, as it is covered in lubricating mud, a camera attached to it would have been quickly destroyed and even if not would have been covered in mud. Likewise those on the surface couldn't see the miners when the drill poked through, only learning they were alive when seeing the note. From what I recall when the drill reached an open space, a camera was sent down to look around after the drill was pulled out. This was done several times before reaching the miners, finding empty tunnels or caverns.
