True I own a RAM with this engine and found myself an Eaton M90 supercharger from the junkyard for $70. It's making about what the stock hemi did and I could probably run a smaller pulley and make more if I trusted the transmission. When I have to replace the filter and change the ATF I might modify the valve body with a sonnax kit to bump the line pressure. It will make easily 400HP if I run an electric fan from the V6 and press on a smaller pulley onto the M90 and still be cheaper than a Hemi.

 @hilljackzack7284 2012 RAM 1500 There are kits available too but if you have a CNC you can make an adapter plate for the m90 to fit the stock throttle body. Intake can be as elaborate as you'd like but I just used a big piece of flex pipe (same bore as throttle body) coated in silicone with foil tape on the outside. Oiling can be the real pain because these heads arguably don't get enough oil pressure as it is. Might want to run an auxiliary but in my case I just made sure the pump is brand new and run off the lines that used to go to an auxiliary oil cooler. Temps never get passed the center of the gauge on the dash. Sorry probably more than you need to know but I figured I'd save you some research if you're looking to do the same on your truck.

To be fair they were never designed to be a race engine, it’s a understressed fairly torquey work truck engine. That stacks well with its competitors, the 2v 4.6 and 4.8. The 2008 update kicked that up to 305/310 depending on the application, which is more than the 4.8 and on par with the 3v 4.6. There was also the HO version of the earlier 4.7 that made 268hp. For the time it’s not too bad. There’s also things you can do to them to make more. But given it was I believe origionally an AMC design that Chrysler carried to market it’s fine. Not a race motor but they’re smooth, refined, torquey, and if you maintain them correctly they’re reliable and can last a long time.

the 4.7l engine was used for 10 years in millions of trucks and SUV's, it gets lots of criticism for problems that are mostly because of poor oil change habits and using non oem parts on the valve train...the HO motor from 2002 was how it always should have been, the 2008 revision with 2 spark plugs per cylinder that could output 290 horsepower should have been the HO motor option. This is a case of (what i believe) a great engine being sold crippled because of the save the planet crazies...

A thing that a lot of people miss to notice is how this kind of high cc and low hp engine tends to be the ones that just never dies. Sometimes is not just about power, torque or speed but even the durability of a motor. For example I have an ‘07 saab 9-3, 1.9TiD engine 8 valves with “just” 118hp, so basically a ratio of 60hp for every 1.0L, just the same as the engine that u previously mentioned, and guess what, that engine NEVER dies. Mine is reaching on 300K kilometers but it still runs and drives without issues and I know for a matter of fact that engines like this tends to last till 600/700K without too much problem. If I have to get a car to go around every day I would rather have a low output engine like these one instead of the shitty ones that can produce 100hp for every 1.0L but last less then 5 years if used🤷🏻

That's like my Chevy Silverado dually with a 496cu.in big block. It's basically idling down the road! The highest RPM it sees is 4500 RPM. You are better off letting it upshift when you get up towards 4500 RPM. 496 cu. in. = 8.1 liter Same theory with engines lasting a long time. Hardly working the engine in the sense of revolutions of the crankshaft. Less bearing and piston ring wear also valve train. However, it is putting out some power, just lower RPM. One of the reasons they use forged pistons to handle the extra power created by these beasts! 🤣 Like the Allison transmission behind it!

You're definitely on to something there. My Dad's 4.7 WJ had 337k miles. Saw a 4.7 WJ for sale the other day that had 473k miles; asked the owner about it and he assured me it was the original engine. Although I have heard about and seen some high mileage HEMIs, they don't seem to be nearly as durable as the good ol' 4.7s at the end of the day. Between the cams giving out and the expensive exhaust manifold gaskets blowing out, the HEMIs can be pretty unreliable and expensive to maintain.
@TheSavage3.6
@TheSavage3.6 9 ай бұрын
@@southwestvajeeper5106That’s because the 4.7 is extremely overbuilt for the power it puts out. It’s made from a closed deck compacted graphite iron block/bed plate and can take just about anything you throw at it. This guy in the video is a moron and has no clue what he’s talking about. Later model Corsair variants of this same engine produced 310 HP and 330LB FT of torque, and around 320-325 on e85 which they had the capacity to use from the factory. They were also significantly detuned to make the hemi look better, with a tune, you can expect to get 50-60hp more out of a 4.7 already making 310HP.
@ElectricBillAlbright
@ElectricBillAlbright 8 ай бұрын
This horsepower rating is done at around 4500 RPM and for a small displacement V-8 that doesn't have a red-line on the factory tachometer because it's more than capable of exceeding the 0 to 7000 RPM tachometer in dash. For a small displacement cranking 235 at 4500 RPM is actually impressive. The fact of horsepower per liter is not a benchmark standard. The other engines being compared are measured at various RPMs. Crank up a 4.7 to 5500 and lets see what you get! The Chrysler Powertech engine is actually a well made engine and is reliable. As long as you run synthetic oil in them. Just as any V-8 the two middle cylinders on each bank have the most heat. Where the two exhaust ports exit the head. This causes massive heat in the overhead cam bearing tower above this area. The oil cooks into sludge and can eventually cause the oil galley port to the bearing to starve for oil. Resulting in bearing seizure and camshaft breaking in half. Synthetic oil doesn't do this and doesn't create sludge build- up. The timing chain system for the two single overhead cams is pretty bullet proof. Three timing chains. One goes from crankshaft to an idler sprocket located where a conventional cam in block design would be. From this idler is a chain going to one cam on the head. Another chain goes to the other head's cam. Very reliable and simple design. No belts stretching and breaking. They did have problems with exhaust studs breaking causing exhaust leaks at cylinder head to manifold. Due to dissimilar metals heat expansion rates. Most of the time the studs break where you can remove them with your fingers. Rarely need an Easy-Out and drilling. I think the replacement studs/bolts are upgraded to a different type of metal and you shouldn't have the problem again. It's not an engine disabling problem, just makes exhaust ticking sound when cold mostly. Otherwise these are very good reliable and powerful engines. 👍👍👍

lol if you only look at the stock peak numbers. People in the know throw later yar HO Cams, Intake and a superchips tune. No redline because its factory limited to 5800, SC Tuner will raise it to 6000-6500 and add about 20 numbers to both side throughout the range. Like everything if youre look for more power you dont just sell it and buy new, you upgrade. Unless youre a "Bought not built" person

What about using synthetic blend?
@ElectricBillAlbright
@ElectricBillAlbright 4 ай бұрын
@@clodge5196 it can help but it doesn't eliminate the problem. Synthetic blend is usually 50/50 Synthetic and traditional oil. The problem is that traditional oil builds up sludge especially in areas of extreme temperature causing the oil to be cooked onto metal surfaces. It repeats this causing a build-up in the oil passages making them smaller diameter until it's completely clogged or severely starving the bearings of oil lubrication. Using full synthetic you won't have the build-up. Synthetic oil is strange, it's actually made from natural gas. I don't know how it's made but it seems strange that it is made from natural gas. I often wonder why it's called "synthetic" if it's derived from natural gas. 🤔 🤷

Exactly right. First gen 4.7 made 235 HP and 295 LB-FT of torque, with a boost to 305 LB-FT in 2005. The second gen 4.7 bumped HP up into the 300s and torque in the upper 300s. The maker of this video needs to review his facts! And besides, this engine has a lot more to boast about in terms of reliability rather than power and performance. It's not a slacker when it comes to performance, but not being the strongest engine is part of what enables these things to hit 300k+ miles with zero rebuilds. Looked at buying a 4.7 WJ with 473k miles the other day. The owner said it was the original engine but was finally having its first major problems at that high of miles. That's one solid engine!!! And these engines are super easy to work on, too. I just pulled the heads off of a project WJ I bought in July. Everything is straight-forward and so basic.

So you're telling me, it is bad because it isn't powerful? What happened to an engine being bad because it is unreliable?

It actually made 295 ft lbs of torque, which was more than most domestic v8s at the time.

lol a 4.7 in Dakota is completely different experience than in a 5500LB full size truck. You then comparing a SOHC to a Pushrod? lol way different dynamics my 04 QC Dakota weighs right around 4400. Dakotas with the 4.7 could weigh as less as 3700 in standard cab trim... lighter than the full iron head/block 5.9 Like the RT was with 250 hp and 345tq and the 4.7 made 295tq. NO WHERE on the internet is anyone saying it made 265tq at the crank... Ive had my 20 for 20 years and thats the first time I've heard 265.

Uhhhm wait my dakota 4.7 with cold air intake and polished throttle body would smoke 318's and most 5.9's whatever h.p. rating dodge claimed. Why chrysler stopped after market perormance parts for these engines as they were race ready from the start i dont remember but it was an engine that we never got to see its potential.
