Great video! Short and sweet, good advice! I have a query though... net kills?? Forehand especially . I find these quite tricky when opponents play good, close, defensive blocks to the net... Forehand grip? Bevel? Pan handle?

Using a left-handed trainer is a bit confusing to me to apply. I had to slowed the playback speed to 0.5x to understand this video and yet still not clear 100% :( Yet I grew up in an Asian country which so many times won badminton's world cup & I played badminton since i was little. Perhaps I have to watch this video about 5-6x to completely understand the video. Overall, I like the ways how they explain things.

I've been playing badminton for 2 years, and I always remember my tutor telling me that last time, that the racquet does not "spin" during your play, the only correct grip is the forehand grip. This is what happen to me, that forcing myself to stay on forehand grip no matter how the shuttle coming, causing me really hard to return the shuttle sometime, because all I remember is, only forehand grip is the correct grip. After this video, now only I acknowledged that, you guys did "spin" the racquet on your hand while playing depends on the direction of the shuttle, thats really answered my mystery of the century.

Thanks guys! I've come to badminton late in life, but really love it!! I've spent the last couple of years trying to undo all the bad habits that I'd self-developed over the previous three. Grips was what I started with and, as you say, with perseverance using the right grip becomes natural quite quickly. What I still find I have to be conscious of though is keeping my grip relaxed until the point of hitting the shuttle - my default is still to be "tense" and "tight" - getting there though 🙂 thanks again for all your helpful tips 👍

So at 1:58, you talk about getting into the bevel grip from a backhand grip, you turn the face clockwise with your thumb on the bevel, but clockwise is only for left-handed people, whereas right handed people turn the face anti-clockwise. The explanation got me confused, but the demonstration at 3:12 shows changing the grip with a right hand, so I was able to understand it from there.

What I normally do when I teach this is to go "backwards from the point of contact": hold the racket up for them where the eventual point of contact will be, THEN have them wrap their fingers around the handle, in the most comfortable way, THEN play around with movement to try to figure out the best stroke that will result in that end position. In a way, the four grips are the RESULT of this exercise, and really there are as many "grips" as there are ways to hold an octagonal prism. Of course I'll usually nudge a little and show them the "right" patterns. Plus, knowing the four standard grip positions gives the beginner an "anchor point" in that it teaches two things: (1) grip is a variable you can and should play with, and (2) force you to explore/adopt stroke patterns that are more optimal, preventing injury prone strokes resulting from the "panhandle lock syndrome". I think it's great to learn bottom up and build good patterns, but also I think it's good to go top-down as well and understand WHY you are doing what you're doing.

For the forehand grip you show what it looks like from the back side of the hand. How does it look from the inside of the hand? That would really help to see where exactly the thumb joins up with the index finger. Should thumb be higher than index? Should thumb be under index? Should thumb be parallel to index? Should thumbs just not exist? LOL, okay maybe we do need thumbs but you get my point. Thanks in advance.

@Badminton Insight The tip for the Bevel grip, where you're advising to turn the racket clockwise is only applicable for left handed players right? As in for the right-handed players it should be counterclockwise? If a right-handed player turned the racket clockwise from the backhand grip, the angle would be 180° wrong

Cheers guys! Tks for the refresher, do you also use the bevel grip to get the smash return on the forehand side, one that are going past ones knee and below, with the racket pointing to the ground, ie bevel /backhand grip on the forehand side. Tks

In singles yes, probably more on the bevel grip!

Wonderful video - as always! Very crisply explained about the grips. Looking forward to more such tutorials. Grips 2 - what amount of thumb pressure to be applied to execute the shots - net shot, smash, clear. 😄 Also, would it be possible to post a video about the possible injuries that could cause if incorrect ways of shots are being played? For instance, why there could be an issue with the elbow - a possibility of incorrect way of executing a forehand smash - etc.

Thank you so much! 😊 The amount of pressure will vary, especially depending on the speed of the shuttles. You will need much less thumb power if the shuttles are really fast, and you should instead use your thumb and fingers to create the control. Do you mean a video like our 'Most Common Injuries' we recently posted on our channel? :)

Nice. Though I would have liked a better illustration of which shots each of these grips is intended for. ❤
