My wife felt bad about having a crate without really knowing what we were going into (2month old malinois/gsd adopted puppy), and I decided to leash her to a corner of the living room when I need a brake or I can't be watching the puppy instead of using a crate. It's been a month a half and for having a malinois crazy dog in an appartment im pretty happy with her. I was just wondering if my leash method is damaging for the dog in any sense, she's pretty chill when she's leashed and lies on her bed most of the time, if she wines a little 2 much I go to check on her and she's never leashed alone, when we leave the house and cant take her we move her to the corridor instead with her bed and a kong toy. She's not really pulling from the leash often so I don't see any problem but I wanted to be sure about it Ty in advance, been loving your content

I’ve just gotten a puppy 3 days ago and your videos have helped me out so much already! But I’ve noticed all the puppies in the videos are very energetic! My pup is about to be 8 weeks old and is relatively mellow. Ive noticed she’s coming out of her she’ll say by day but the problem is getting her to GIVE me attention 😂 don’t get me wrong she likes to play and stuff but she’s definitely not jumping around all the time. Any tips on how to deal with a mellow dog???
@rosannebowman25923 жыл бұрын
My dog is so inconsistent. We'll have a solid week of great walks. He gets super excited to meet people, so I've been really working on just walking by without losing his mind. We'll have a great few days or even a solid week, and I'll think he's really getting it, (my goal is for him to look at me when he sees someone to kind of head off the whole over-excitement thing).then all of a sudden, it's like he completely forgot anything we were doing - same scenario, same distance, etc. I am always trying to manage so I keep a close eye on the environment so I can redirect or put more distance if I see a problem situation - i.e. all people, all dogs = I have won the lottery mentality for Sherlock. We'll have 2 weeks of little to no pulling on leash, and then he reverts back to pulling. He is more of a working dog than I had anticipated based on my last dog I got from the same breeder, so he needs exercise. I am committed to at least 45-60 minutes of brisk walking, plus training sessions, plus a few play sessions, but walking is miserable when he is in one of his pulling moods. It's just super frustrating. I thought I was a decent dog trainer. My last dog was well-behaved, polite, and listened well. With this dog, I keep thinking maybe I should have just gotten a cat.
@McCannDogs3 жыл бұрын
That last line, Rosanne :D. Remember that if you feel like you're struggling, take a step back in your progressions. 30 super short stretches of "good walking" is better than 1 long walk that doesn't go well. I love that you're identifying these challenges! Next step -> Stop "testing" and get back to "training". It isn't always a linear path when it comes to dog training. You can even work on some other things to tire him out instead of worrying that he hasn't gotten enough exercise. I'll add a link here to a few activities to tire him out so you can focus on shorter walking sessions: kzbin.info/aero/PL7BBgLulhermRIpWOOKh73VnLmpjiZdeg Happy Training!
@rosannebowman25923 жыл бұрын
@@McCannDogs - Thanks! I will try some of those other activities so we can take a bit shorter walks and/or more mini sessions. I do generally break our walks up into 2 different times so it's not all at once, but still, Sherlock is a bit of a moose (70 lbs at 10 months) so I guess the plus side is I'm getting really toned arms! :)

Your videos are the only thing I’ve ever binge watched on KZbin. 😂 Since getting our puppy 4 weeks ago, you’ve helped me SO much! Thank you!! As to consistency - any tips for reinforcing loose leash walking when taking pup out to potty in our backyard? I want her to focus on going to the bathroom so I keep her leashed and don’t want to introduce food, but that’s a spot where she can pull a lot. 😬 I take her off leash after she’s finished and go to a different part of the yard for playtime and/or do separate potty/playtime outdoor visits. Thanks in advance!

I know its recommended at 8 but she is already weened from momma and they are being socialized. The 2 times I have met her she likes to bite like all puppies do, so I know there will be a lot of training to do. She is an Ausky, Blue Heeler dad and Husky momma. I am so excited to bring her home and its been 11 years since I had a dog. Also wasnt she your brothers pup? 🤔

What do you consider the maximum time we can keep a puppy in its crate? If we go to work she would be there for like 7 hours and that feels terribly long to have her in such a small place but we cannot leave her running around the whole house either . we have a for one week now and she is only two month old!
