As a native speaker it's so interesting consciously reflecting upon things like this that were always just second nature and I never really gave too much thought to🤔

codswallop321 Hi, thanks to teaching I have learned to slow down and annunciate with unnatural clarity. Whilst I never noticed how I run words together in my pre-teaching life, I subconsciously erased anything that eroded clarity. So in classes (and generally speaking- so to speak) I now say each word without running them together. I have often been asked by other Brit natives where I'm from, they assume I'm non-native! Always baffled me. Now I understand why, I don't speak like a local anymore!

There's an irony to this. By teaching others to speak natural English, you yourself have forgotten how to do it...

Very informative, thank you very much! here is just a quick recap : 1) CATENATION carrying the consonant from the end of one word into the begining of the new word starting with vowel. example: an apple = annaple 2) INTRUSION when an extra sound intrudes to make it easier to flow between two vowel sounds. There are 3 most common intrusion sounds: A) /j/ (we /j/ all play /j/ out), B) /w/ (go /w/ out to /w/ open), C) /r/ (there /r/ is; better /r/ alone) 3) ELISION is loss of a phoneme sound, lost /t/ and /d/ at the end. (next door = neks do:(r), most common = mose common) 4) ASSIMILATION is similar to elision but instead of the phoneme being dropped, two phonemes come together and change into a new phoneme sound. A) /t/ + /j/ = /tS/ (ch) sound (meet you = meechyoo, picture = pikcher, Tuesday = chyoosday) B /d/ + /j/ = /dz/ (did you = didzyou)

When language teachers speak to students, we tend to slow the language down, exaggerate differences between sounds and emphasise certain speech patterns in a very unnatural way. To teach you to say the English letter "R" with your lips forward, we push our lips forward way too much, in a way that any native speaker would find ludicrous. Unfortunately, students tend to assume, because that's how they hear it spoken, that that's the best way to speak, or even that's it's the only right way to speak. The first time I heard the equivalent "rules" in Mandarin, I told a professor of linguistics from Beijing that he was wrong! I'd never heard anyone else talk the way he told me to! So now, I will say this to students: have you ever wondered why listening seems so much harder than reading or writing? I did in Mandarin. It's because you expect everyone else to speak the way your teacher does. You're listening out for what you've heard from your teacher, or watching their mouth waiting for that silly pouting which they never do. What Lucy's teaching here is "real" speech. They aren't rules so much as ways we streamline the language to make it more efficient. The theory is that, as students get more fluent at higher levels, they'll naturally adopt them in the same way for the same reasons. I've seen no evidence that the theory works.

I think, a lot of people would be glad to hear about it) Thank you ;) Great video, btw :)

The third one, elision, helped me so much!! I've been struggling with that in my pronunciation recently. I hadn't even realized that is the reason I don't sound like a native speaker. Thank you so much Lucy! An in-depth lesson about that (elision) would be incredibly useful!

Hi, Lucy! I wouldn't call cases such as "better alone" or "there is" examples of "intrusion". I'd say those are instances of "linking r," in which the letter r is present in the spelling of the word. On the other hand, when you hear how some native speakers of British English pronounce a word like "drawing" with an r sound in the middle, or an expressions like "the idea (r) of...", "the sha (r) of Persia", "law (r) and order" (Laura Norder, haha!), then we do have a real case of intrusive r, since this letter r is not present (this is the intrusion) in the original spelling of the word that is being uttered. Gorgeous video! Thanks!

I'm a native english speaker but you taught me something (that wasn't even the topic of the video!) I have always thought "more quickly" was incorrect compared to "quicker" but when I heard you say it I went and researched and it turns out it's the other way around, both are acceptable but people seem to prefer "more quickly" :)

Lucy ,is an 's' sound with 'y' sound an assimilation. I mean do they make a 'sh' sound like as you and bless you become ash you and blesh you? . Thank you
@ib9rt
@ib9rt 7 жыл бұрын
Assimilations occur where the changed sound is easier to say. For your examples, "as you" sounds like "az you" and this is already quite easy to say, so it doesn't change. Similarly, "bless you" is also quite easy to say as it stands. However both will benefit from catenation, thus "az-zyou" and "bless-syou".

Shortened sounds are sometimes troublesome to me in conversations. This video, even it is short, makes me sense how the sounds change. Very useful, one point lessen!

Hello! In spanish, when you talk quick and there's an "S" between a word, sometimes that sound is lost or even change by another sound like the "G", but this last is unusual. España --> E(s)paña --> Egpaña

Hello Lucy. This is Carlos from Mar del Plata, Argentina. Thank you so much for so much lovely lessons. I believe there is a more stunning example of intrisive /r/ in rapid speech for example in the following sequence: "...sofa r and chairs .." or " a clear idea r of the advantages and disadvantages of .." I'll keep squeezing your videos as dry as I can" Preeshaydit

Hello Lucy! Another thing I noticed about assimilation is that English people say /ʃ/ when /s/ and /j/ come together, don't they? Like in the sentence: I promise you I'll do my best. Also, I really like your videos and they really help me! ^^

Muchas gracias por tus videos Lucy. Saludos desde Venezuela donde estamos en la víspera o del comienzo de una dictadura militar férrea o de una guerra civil. Tus videos son una manera de darme cuenta que fuera de aquí, el mundo discurre con texturas diferentes y que existen personas con inteligencia y sensibilidad. Gracias de nuevo!

Thanks a lot, Lucy. Your videos help me so much. I used to pronounce a word by slow speed so that it can be more clearly but now I learn how to pronounce a word quickly and native. Waiting for the improvement . Someday it will be possible for me to chat with British people with a native accent. P. S. I feel sorry as my English isn't good enough.
