it's a good rundown. i would also include the chinese jump smash. it's neither a stick smash nor a jump-out smash because your body is turned in preparation but you don't rotate your hips. we saw this one a lot from lin dan and also LCW, and it is used by a lot of players now. also any of these smashes may include some degree of forward or reverse slice, and of course power variations. the trick is to not only master it all technically, which takes a lot of work, but also to develop awareness and tactical skill so you intuitively know how to craft your attack for the situation, which takes even more work

Hello Greg & Jen, Thanks for this video it has really helped me a lot. If i may ask, I have a question about recovery from injury. I have injure my lower back (piriformis muscle which is affecting sciatica nerve) . I have been in this pain for months , I have been in limited movements due to this injury. Have you or any other athletes had this issue due to overstretching while hitting a smash or taking a hit by stretching yourself to an arching lower back position to the back of the court? have you had a similar injury and what therapy worked best for you? I will appreciate it if you could share some light on this topic.

I find the match analysis very useful as tactical game play is where i lack after stopping training professional for the state tram and left for university. I am now 24 and still active playing badminton and at the same time helping to burture the elite juniors. Also, maintaining my fitness too, it really helps me to stay consistent despite notntraining anymore Though, i am struggling to build my own programme specifically for badminton to help me to improve or at least to remain consistent and disciplined. are there any tips besides getting your workout programme hehehe thanks a lots!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉

Hi Greg and Jenny! Just a question, When you do a jump smash, is it important to raise your non racket hand in the air and the legs be bent like a 90degree angle?
@BadmintonInsight
@BadmintonInsight 6 ай бұрын
Non-racket hand up = yes definitely! This helps your timing, balance and rotation. For the legs to be bent to a 90 degree, no this isn’t important! But some players do it when they get a loooot of height on their jump and it helps them to really stretch out their chest!

Hitting a smash is also a bit like throwing a punch from another perspective. When you are getting ready to punch, you keep your hands relaxed and loose and only clench your fist ideally at the moment of impact. Likewise, you should tighten your fingers around the racquet only at the moment it hits the shuttle or just before.

3:31 yup. I can do a very good jump smash form. But my heavy belly cause me to reach the floor much faster before i do the smash. But trust me, i have a picture perfect form. Just that I BELIEVE my belly is too heavy. Whoops

In singles I usually play smach to oponent body when I"m in mid court range, but sometimes is not efective. In doubles is difficult make good placement.

Yes it's good to keep the smash placement varied so your opponents can't guess! In doubles, a typically good place to smash is to the right hip of right handers / left hip of left handers - so try aiming for this! 😁🏸

How would I know if my smash is powerful? What should I focus on ? The feel, the sound, the inability of my opponents to intercept with their racquet ??

you would know if you hit a clean powerful smash, the feeling even for pros and us club players would recognise immediately if its a clean powerful smash. you should focus on timing of your smash more than adding strength. i think the misconception of just swing faster or get bigger muscle is the way to power, although yes it does affect it but timing is by far more important, from my experience even timing any shot from the back of the court creates more power and in some cases accuracy. if you hit a powerful smash and a person was able to return it then im sure 99% of the time they didnt realise they returned it. i used to hit slice smashes a couple years ago without realising but that was due to me being a little ignorant with my positioning so i end up slicing a smash unconsciously than put in a powerful smash

@@ovtroll1199 My smashes are pretty standard. Nothing extraordinary nor weak/flat. But sometimes it goes like a rocket @ such an angle which surprises both the opponent & myself if it travelled through the net ‼️ And I really don't know how to replicate the same.. because there was nothing special about it till the moment it left my racquet. LoL

Moving towards the shuttle while smashing is not so necessary because of momentum. The smash speed is 200, 300, 400 km/m, your body speed is maybe 10-15 km/h at that moment. Adding or substracting such small speed makes almost no difference. The real difference is where your body is moving after smash. It's important to move forward to make a next possible shot after your opponent's defense.
