It's weird to see a genre so associated with being the music of the streets getting so uppity about dining habits and overpriced water. Come to think about it, the whole Grey Poupon thing also has hints of that, and I'm pretty sure that started in the 90s. Are... are rappers just really picky eaters? Is that what it is?
@inugamidalton82706 жыл бұрын
@@25IVEintl I can see that. I would argue that it's a bit hypocritical to celebrate their rise to money as a triumph over the classist system that kept them down, only then to berate people for not knowing all of their newly acquired rich people food. It would be different if they were just bragging ("we on that grey poupon, that ted talk", for example), since that just would be a celebration of success, but dissing others for not knowing high class things just reinforces that classist mentality.

Hey Rap Critic, I’m a longtime fan and your reviews have really helped form my musical tastes ever since I was in middle school. Now I’m a small time critic going to college and I feel like I need to give back to you after all the awesome recommendations you’ve given me over the years, but I’m pretty broke like most college students, so I can only really repay you in song recommendations. I have listed a few little rap gems that were lost in the noise, but I feel you’ll likely see that at least one of them would fcomfortably in your “Best Songs of 2018 List”. I have a couple of mainstream picks (This is America - Childish Gambino for example) but I tried to pick to more underground or overlooked songs that could be considered some of the best of the year. I think you’ll consider these some of the best songs of the year: Release the Hounds - Esh Ronnie - Dem Atlas Acid King - Malibu Ken Sick - Astronautalis, Chesci and P.O.S The Way Down - Sadistik Klutz - Aesop Rock Stumble - E-Turn Deposition Regarding the Green Horse for Rap -Milo The Punishment of Sisyphus - Hermit and the Recluse Lips - Moodie Black Middle Claws Up - Mikal kHill The Start-Up Son - Coolzey Pray to Jesus - Sam Hill Dettol - Armand Hammer 9th vs. Thought - Black Thought JJ Sad - Rob Sonic U Turn - Mick Jenkins Kill ‘Em with the Sauce - Montana of 300 1492 Conquest of Paradise - K.A.A.N. And of course; This is America by Childish Gambino. And just take your pick from the several perfect songs on DROGAS Waves by Lupe Fiasco, any song on the album ‘6666’ by Four Fists, anything from ‘Some Rap Songs’ by Earl Sweatshirt, and your choice out of the 15 percent songs on Busdriver’s new epic revolutionary freeform jazz-rap album; ‘Electricity is on Our Side’. I couldn’t choose a top pick from any of those because they’re all equally great. I honestly think that even if you don’t end up picking any of them on your 2018 list, you’ll definitely appreciate these songs. 2018 has been a really great year for rap

And one other choice I might as well throw in for the Worst Lyrics of 2018 list, from Lucid Dreams by Juice WRLD: "I have these Lucid Dreams where I can't move a thing" Yea, that's not what a lucid dream is. And it's pretty bad that he even named the song that. Well, I think we all know what to say here! If you don't know what something is... JUST GOOGLE IT!
@mariokarter136 жыл бұрын
"A lucid dream is a dream during which one is aware that they are dreaming." Where's the contradiction? He's aware he's asleep and sleep paralysis is a thing. Could also play into the story of the song, "thoughts of a wedding ring" but he didn't act on it and now he's lost her.
@heymistercarter.6 жыл бұрын
@@mariokarter13 but also, though, lucid dreams often mean that when you're aware that you're dreaming, you also have a sense of control over what goes on in your dreams. Like you can control what happens in the dream, you can understand the meaning of them, and so on. So here, when Juice WRLD (such a stupid name, by the way) says that he can't move during his dreams, it suggests that he doesn't have any control of them, and he may not even be aware that he's even dreaming. So in that context, no, what he's having aren't lucid dreams.

@superduperseann6 жыл бұрын
He has this dream where he is in control, but yet still can’t change anything. The meaning behind the song is that his ex still haunts him, hence why this line plays in. In his dreams, she is still there. He knows he dreaming, yet can’t keep her out of them (which is why he can’t move a thing).

Couple suggestions for the best of list: Kids See Ghosts - Reborn wasn't a huge fan of the album overall, felt it was ridiculously bottomheavy, but of the good songs from it this is easily the best and one of my favourite hip hop singles of the year Twenty One Pilots - Neon Gravestones or Levitate really didn't expect these guys to put out anything i'd ever like but Trench really surprised me with some great songwriting and top notch production. personally i prefer levitate as a song but neon gravestones has the best lyrics of the album and easily outclasses other conscious hip hop takes on suicide Nickelus F - Mids i feel like hip hop as a whole has mostly slept on this man and it's a shame because he's one of the most unique dudes out there making use of modern hip hop sounds. nickelus f's raspy voice and unique flows and lyrics make his strange brand of cloud rap some of the most compelling, especially paired with his often fantastic production, and this song is the culmination of it all - a song about how Petey is sick of being fucked with and just wants to revel in his success. it's a total banger, especially live (side note, this man has one of the best live shows in hip hop, 100% pure hype and fantastic fun), and ludicrously catchy to boot. Kanye West - Violent Crimes for all his shenanigans this year, kanye has remained one of the most interesting personas on pop music and it yielded ye, one of his most personal albums and one packed with some incredibly powerful songs. violent crimes is a big moment for kanye as a persona and one of the most compelling songs of ye's career. Pusha T - What Would Meek Do? i promise you i'm not even a particularly big kanye fan, it's just his incredibly presence in hip hop this year that has put him on the list so many times. anyways, this is one of the most solid hater-castoff songs i've ever heard and has a pure fire beat, the great brags we expect from pusha, and one of the better kanye guest verses. clipping. - Face (Flanch Remix) Face is my favourite clipping. track so I was a little nervous seeing it get remixed, but Deathbomb Arc came through with a killer selection and the best is definitely Flanch's take, though it's honestly more of an original song sampling Face than an actual remix. Anyways, the beatwork on this is fantastic, and Flanch spits some fantastic abstract bars. Sorry that the list is a little short, I didn't end up listening to as much new hip hop this year as I have previous years, but hopefully you consider.

Their defense for this is “It ain’t cheating, it’s a whatchamacallit”, which is the dumbest excuse I’ve ever heard of.

Seeing how you're reacting to that Lupe track, you should try to decipher some of Aesop Rock's work.

I don't have any specific songs but you should check out the Milky Way album from Bas, and DiCaprio 2 from J.I.D. Those were 2 pretty good albums.

How about KOTA The Friend? He’s released some really nice songs this year. My favorite is Alkaline, but it might not be this year, so I’d say check out Colorado or Chicago Diner. Colorado is my pick.

Neon Gravestones by Twenty One Pilots and Stick Up by Grandson are two incredible rap songs that you probably wouldn't hear much as a hip-hop fan. They're both in my Top 4 songs of the year as of now. Also, I'm pretty sure you're already considering it, but Brightfall by Tech N9ne is also dope.

You should check out Starlight by Snowgoons ft. Viro the virus! One of my favorites and I think it deserves a lot more attention. Maybe do an episode on it? RIP Viro.

RC, you gotta put Django Jane in your best list. And depending on how you feel about Moo by Doja Cat, put that in a list. I personally love Moo by Doja cat, but it’s your opinion on how you feel about it.

Best of the year: Give a listen to the song, 5 Out of 6, by Dessa. (That entire album of hers is fantastic.) Also check out the album Weather or Not, by Evidence. That’s got some great songs on there too.

Got another Worst Lyrics contender, from One Track Mind by Thirty Seconds To Mars featuring A$AP Rocky: “Heard it’s only Thirty Seconds to Mars But it takes even less for you to get to my heart” I don’t even think I need to add anything more to that dreck there.

For best songs i'd suggest either "Off da Zoinkys" by J.I.D (I'd recommend listening to this guy's entire album, it's great) and/or "Percs" or "Sirens" by Denzel Curry.

"O-Okay, I think I understand what's going on here." My entire experience with Drogas Wave in one line. As opposed to my experience with Tetsuo and Youth, which was "I have no idea what's going on here."
