Thanks for the bi erasure callout. Having a straight man treat it as such a casual "dude that's pretty obviously not it" type of thing is such a relief. While I can pass as straight if I want to, it still sucks how there's a lot of dismissal coming from both straight and gay people even in 2022. Having it be treated as so ordinary is pretty refreshing!

I think the line about Geppetto means that Nicki is SO ghetto that she can swear it on the guy who created Pinnochio, a character that can't lie without his nose giving him away. She's CLEARLY telling the truth about how ghetto she is, because even the creator of Pinnochio can't prove that she's lying! .....Yeah, this lyric is really convoluted. The lines about "take Suge and take R. Emphasis on the main squeeze though, since he basically says "make it painful for him" and "just fucking kill him."

To give 6LACK some credit, "Stan" has been used a lot to mean that you really like something/someone (I stan Kendrick Lamar, for example). However, I've always found that absolutely stupid as there were already ways to say that you absolutely love something, and using Stan so casually as a verb is self defeating, as the people using it never mean they are *that* obsessed with something, which begs the question of why reference the song in the first place, because if the song was *just* about a big fan of Eminem, then it wouldn't be noteworthy in the first place. So yeah, 6LACK probably just heard some idiot mis-using the word Stan and copied them for this song. They still deserve some shit for using a term while being ignorant of its origins, but really the bulk of judgement should go towards pop culture for using that word incorrectly in the first place

I feel like the wink at the end of Devil's Work has more meaning than we think. On the otherhand, it's part of the video and I'm not a fan of needing a video to understand the message of a song (Kind of why I thought "This is America" was overrated as hell).

Nothing intricate about it. It's just a pretentious rapper with no real knowledge or insights on the topic he's talking about. I think it's pathetic.

So I looked that Joyner Lucas song up, and here's his full list of people he wants taken away by God and brought back to life: He wants God to take: Suge Knight, Donald Trump, Martin Shkreli, R. Kelly, Eric Holder, George Zimmerman, Dylann Roof, James Holmes, Tomi Lahren, Laura Ingraham Who he wants brought back/exchanged for the people above: TuPac Shakur, Notorious BIG, Big Pun, XXXTENTACION, Selena, Aaliyah, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Lil Snupe, Eric Wright (Eazy E), Trayvon Martin, Nipsey Hussle, Emmett Till, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Sandra Bland I think someone said it above, it's like he turned a meme about swapping one living celebrity with a dead one and made a full song about it. RC just gave a few examples.

As a card-carrying bi, the Nicki line comes off as needing a rhyme for "Tell Mike Jordan send me my retros" (a forced rhyme at that). I'm actually okay with the Geppetto line because in the Pinocchio story, he's a poor man whose sole motivation is his passion. I'm even okay with the rhyme "Plus I'm little, where's my stiletto/Tell Mike Jordan send me my retros", but these lines aren't the setup/punchline. It's the second and third lines of a four line rhyme scheme, where "Used to be bi, now I'm just hetero" is the punch line. What does that have to do with being passionate about something despite your living situation or shoe bars? If it's a line for shock value, none of her other bars give off that sense, and the days of "Nicki Minaj being shocking" seem to be behind her, so it's out of place. If Nicki wants to clarify her sexuality, I say go for it, but this isn't the song nor the punchline to do it with. It just sounds at the best intentionally trying to get a rise and at worst intentionally dismissive.

That Wayne line is actually really nice. He can't tell himself that because he's still looking for himself. Uses the language of one person asking a second person to talk to a third distinct person, but the first and the third are one and the same. The meaning of the line wraps back around into the meaning of the line. Not the deepest of lyrics but still a pretty cool way to phrase it.

The Lil Wayne one does sound stupid, but also makes sence in its context. He's so far distanced from himself that even self talk feels dissociated. Although it's a Wayne lyric so I could just be over thinking it and he simply couldn't rhyme "looking for me" with anything other than "looking for me"

@@LESTR97 Yeahhhh....granted, that isn't even the biggest question I have. Mine is, "Why does he spend this entire song accusing God of taking people before their time, when at the end he's going to say, "Oh, this isn't your fault, though. It's the Devil's Work." Kind of undercuts any kind of religious angst you were going for, doesn't it Joyner?
