That's the future. Interceptor missiles are nice but too expensive for cheap modern drone swarms. Need a gun for it that shoots cheaper ammo. Need to go back to flack guns but automated. Spending 2 million on a missile to shoot down a $1k drone is not sustainable.
@Lonewolfmike
@Lonewolfmike Жыл бұрын
I'm thinking the same thing. Easier and cheaper to use AA guns to deal with drones especially. And with all of the tech they can cram into rounds these days a hell of a lot cheaper. Add in some Stingers to the mix, or whatever you prefer as a small anti-air missile, and you got a really good package.

Crazy that the Leopard 1 that it shares its chassis with, was designed in the 1950s and yet these machines now wreak havoc on 21st century technology. The German military had merely retired the Gepard because the upkeep became too expensive, but in a war, that aspect is a moot point.
@spxram4793
@spxram4793 Жыл бұрын
The upkeep of the Leo 1 chassis is rather inexpensive, the main problem here will be the computer and radar control systems, these are aging and the human experts for them get less and less. They maybe should be modernized with current tech, as the mechanics fulfill the role perfectly. I'd also guess they would do well in an anti-APV role, or to take out a column of trucks, or a train.

We were airborne infantry on preparation for Afghanistan deployment in 2004 at the "Putlos" prooving ground in northern germany and had a very immersive night time live firing excercise with tracer rounds and night vision. It was not an ordinary firing range, but some kind of terrain firing range with various buildings, vehicles and pop-up targets on the other side of a small valley. On the ranges next to us left and right side, several Gepards had a live firing excercise, shooting drones with tracer rounds. It was truly a impressive experience and i remember that i was thinking this is what war must look and sound like...

@@andreainzaghi7373 Fighting guerillas is always more difficult than a regular military. At least guerilla groups are way harder to detect and defeat. A super power army? Wich one? Russia? Are you kidding? The russian military was completely overrated and still is. Let´s summarise a few facts that make the russian army nothing more than a wannabe superpower army: Complete incompetence in pre-operational recon. Led to a diastrious invasion with the ukrainians slap the russian army from Kyiv back to Belarus and making the russian army struggle to advance further than the Dnipro. And making the russian military fail so bad, that they had to partially mobilise. Against an enemy that is way weaker in every aspect. Well, at least on paper... They lost several warships against an enemy that does not have own warships. That happend the last time during the mongol invasion of Japan, in the year 1281. It took almost 750 years to have someone beeing that stupid and dumb again. Not realy surprising that russia is the one earning that price. Prigoschin advanced further into russia within 24h, than the russian army managed to advance in Ukraine within 23 months. The Ukrainians regulary send drones all the way to moscow, showing the russian military beeing unable to protect the homeland properly. They have to send old stuff (partially 50 year old T62´s) to Ukraine, as they cannot produce their modern stuff in significant numbers (About 20 T-14 Armata in service and about 12 Su-57 Felons - ROFL) The list can go on, there are dozens of other examples of why the russian army is NOT a superpower army.

Well done Video. But I may add some comments. To my knowledge, and by that I mean I am not an expert, some aspects should have been "sharpened". The Gepard was not ment as "the anti-aricraft system" of germany. They were designed to be in combat alongside Leopard Tanks etc. to protect them from CAS. When they went out of service, they actually werent "replaced" by anything, the german army simply lost that capability. This was labeled a wrong decision by many inside the "Bundeswehr", and we can somehow say they are now proven to be right. I am really happy they perform that well in the ukraine. They were, as almost all german vehicles, never really tested in battle and noone really knew ho they will perform. Lets hope the other stuff will do so as well.

Ukraine got a lot more ammo than 6K rounds. That is all there was in the German ammo reserves. The biggest issue was the only country that still manufactured the ammo was Switzerland. As a neutral country the Swiss refused to ship ammo to Ukraine while they were actively engaged in combat with Russia. Germany had to start making it again and it took a little while to restart that manufacturing line up. Norway sent some ammo too though I am not sure if this was ammo that was already made or if they have to make it for this purpose.

No, its worse. Swiss arms export laws are restrictive, customers are not allowed to deliver arms and ammunition to other countries without Swiss government approval. And Swiss government refused that authorisation to Germany and other countries for delivering 35mm ammunition to Ukraine. They argued with "neutrality" that is not really part of the export restriction laws. I grew up in Fulda, in the state of Hessen, 18km (11 miles) from East Germany. Terrain is such that if WWIII were to happen by a communist invasion from the east it would have rolled through the Fulda Gap. The essential idea was Fulda would be the trip wire/alarm for Frankfurt, Heidelberg and every big city to the west. FPG, US Vulcan AA (no longer in service) and several others were DECADES ahead of the communists. We didn't know this until the Iron Curtain fell and we could actually see Soviet and East German equipment up close. This was 1991 and some of their guys saw ours (not legally of course) and they could not believe how good thermal imaging was back then. Some of the young guys who never left the farmland in Russia thought we were playing a TV recording and wired it into the vehicles. A sergeant I met named Yuri said _"You could use three hidden things (meaning tanks, Bradleys, Leopard II) and destroy half our armor company before we know where you are."_ Honestly, firing a tank gives away it's location but range and accuracy NATO equipment has makes his statement true.

Nice video. I was a conscript Leopard 1 driver being trained as a gunner on the Dutch version of Gepard. The analog version called PRTL. Later akin Gepard 2 as you mentioned updated as a digitilized version Cheetah. (Actually named after an error in the press. The specific tank was called so but the army gave up and the name stuck.) Contrary to what many think the Gepard is not a good ground combat vehicle. Much too high and lightly armoured. The tactick we trained was fire twice two single shot first AA HE rounds and two HEAT rounds. And then two more HEAT rounds. 15 such rounds are in the outer bins storage. Simply try to put a T72 off balance in order to make a run for it behind a smoke screen. Nice to see that the system is cost effective against large drones and cruisemissiles. How the system holds up when used in the stated counter offensive remains to be seen. It will require protection against small kamikazi drones. Yet I guess the Ukrainians know this and don't need Gepard to protect the assault because manpads and Patriot can do so better.

I guess our comparison would be Vulcan. Back in the day, I was a Chaparral Crewman. Chaparral fired essentially sidewinder missiles. Vulcan's were of course a multibarrel gun on a tracked vehicle. The 3rd leg of the SHORAD stool back then was Redeye, repaced with Stinger MANPADS. Basically the thought was Vulcan wasn't going to hit anything, but if it drove them up a little, we'd get them with Chaparral. Stingers could be used to fill in the gaps. I remember us shooting at BATS, ballistic aerial targets. they had styrofoam, winged, propeller driven airplanes that Vuclan would shoot at. Even wrapping them in aluminum foil wasn't enough for the Vulcan radar to pick them up, and the gunners shooting manually couldn't hit them. But Vulcan was useful on ground targets including infantry. Chaparral always hit our targets, I'm surprised they haven't dragged some out for Ukraine. I didn't like the towed Chaps at all, too much work for us crewmen. Tracked ones were much better.

The main weakness of this kind of gun system is that a modern jet can pass through it's engagement envelope in well under a minute so, unless the gun system has advanced warning, it's hard for them to react fast enough to engage that kind of plane. Also missiles that will home in on the gun's active radar system are pretty cheap and have enough range that they can be fired from outside of the guns effective range so they can't operate their radars constantly to give advanced warning. That said, against drones and low flying cruise missiles, they can still be effective. Not a replacement for other, more advanced missile systems but a cheaper alternative for lesser threats so you can save the higher cost missiles for engaging the fighters.

I remember when an American firm developed an anti-aircraft weapon called the Phalanx, which used a gun similar to the one used on the A-10 Warthog. Naturally, it used a tracking radar & computer. It sent up an absolute barrage of 30mm projectiles to intercept the plane.
@gandalfgreyhame3425
@gandalfgreyhame3425 Жыл бұрын
The CIWS (Close-in weapon system) Phalanx is a 20mm Gatling cannon with automated radar tracking, packaged in a cute round topped canister that makes it look like R2D2 - it's standard equipment on virtually every US Navy fleet size warship. A land based version of the Phalanx was adopted by the US Army to deal with the constant random terrorist mortar and rocket attacks on their bases in Iraq. They called this the C-RAM, counter rocket, artillery, and mortar, designed to shoot down these incoming mortar and rocket attacks. It's basically a Navy CIWS mounted on a very large 35 ton truck. Not quite as mobile as the Gepard in the mud of Ukraine, but I'm sorry the US hasn't sent some of these units over to Ukraine, now that the US Army isn't using them anymore in Iraq and Afghanistan.
@gustavmeyrink_2.0
@gustavmeyrink_2.0 Жыл бұрын
The barrage is the problem. The Gepard successfully shoots down it's prey using as little as 6 shells per target. 24 was the standard default but Ukraine found out that 6 are enough.Another problem with Gatling type guns is that they are externally powered and thus need time to get to full speed. Germany tested those but found that a recoil or gas powered autocannon throws more lead towards the target during the all important first second than a Gatling gun even though the ultimate rate of fire is much lower and still works should the external power source fail.

The initial sock of ammo supplied with the 30 tanks was only! 6000 ... you can calculate how many seconds each Geppard could shoot with 1100 shots per minute per tank with this ridiculously low qty.! The Swiss were continuously blocking the sale and final delivery to Ukraine of the Geppard ammunition initially only produced in their country (The Ukrainians needed this ammo only for self-defense against air attacks from Russia). It seems the Swiss prefer to deal with mountains of gold and dollars or rubles from all kinds of sources that were surely honestly obtained in Russia! That really resulted in a lot of blood & lives lost (also that of civilians) on their hands as well! I wonder how they can sleep well and still decline to help! (I wonder what happened with all the conveniently missing Nazi gold back in the 40's ?? or with the treasures of all those rich despots & dictators worldwide under the cloak of so-called neutrality and bank secret)
