Absolutely correct. I worked in the State of Kommifornia for nearly 20 years as an ASE-certified tech. Here, you cannot tell a customer a part is 'bad' unless it is bent, broken or out of spec. To do so will earn you the wrath of the Kommifornia BAR. You cannot even 'recommend' a part unless it is bent, broken or out of spec. What you can do is a little show and tell, Show the customer the part, note the age and some of the of the signs of potential failure. Let the customer make the decision to replace or not replace. That way, you stay out of trouble. A large tire store chain that came to Kommifornia in the 90's from Oregon learned these lessons the hard way. Telling customers they 'needed' calipers with every brake job, etc. Being honest and letting the customer make the decision is the best way.

His rambling does get a bit tedious at times, but it's his content. People don't appreciate how long it takes to edit videos, even simple edits take a long time. Running a business then going home to edit videos would be really time consuming, not too mention the time he would lose during the day setting up the camera for the videos. That's time lost which he could have been earning more income. An option is to watch at a faster speed, or just watch in X minute chunks. I'm sure there are plenty of shorter videos if someone is looking for a more specific and concise repair.

I agree, I break up my view time based on what I am busy doing. As long as it's interesting. I do videos and try to do the talking during it, except to join different videos into one, I don't know how to edit and voice over. Plus his rambling is more to the point at the time, than going back and watching and then adding audio. He is very wordly talented. Plus he remembers so many things from the past that ring a bell to me and it's fun to think about them again.

It's a case of having half the work done just by getting it on the lift, inspected and pulling the right front axle out with it's bound up u-joint. The added cost for time is a lot less than if you were to let Ray just fix that u-joint and put everything together only to have to come back in a year or two to fix the rest. So parts and some time makes economic sense in this case. Time is so darned expensive that it often makes sense to have as much fixed as possible once the car is off the floor. The frustrating thing is that this mens that those strapped for cash often end up having to pay more because they cant afford the extra parts and work at the same time, so they have to come back several times fixing things as their economy allows for it.

My late Father was a mechanic for Dodge, Chrysler Plymouth for 37 years. Back in 1985, when I was 19, I worked in the Sears Auto Center for a couple years. I took a different career path after that. Now in the last half of my 50s, I just can't lay over fenders and twist my arms and back in ways I used to. But, I still like to do some basic wrenching on my own and my wife's vehicles and other little things in my garage. I don't mind at all videos being long. In auto repair things don't always go easy and to plan. With Ray's videos, you get to see when bolts strip or break, a fastener doesn't come loose, and the whole process of disassembly and reassembly. I like Ray's videos because it takes me back to the mid 1970s when after school ( grade school) I would walk down to the garage where my Father worked and watch him work on what we call the classic muscle cars and the regular cars. Plus I like seeing all the special tools you have to have on some of this now. My Father died in 1988, and if he could see how the cars are now, he would have a few non repeatable words for the auto engineering of today.

I’ve fallen down every pit that Ray has shown us, from Noodle Arm, to low energy levels, to Karen kustomers. He tells it as it is. So it takes an hour? Who cares? One thing though….sooner or later Ray, you’ve got to let the wife unit loose with the power tools. Now that…Is gonna be a great video!

Ignore the naysayers Ray, you have 532k subscribers and counting for a reason. Your commentary is so natural and clear and your recording skills so strong and scenes well set up when watching you don't really realise you have edited your videos down. You get better angles on most of your work than the "more professional" outfits do. You've even started more in depth explanations recently of how certain mechanisms or parts function (not theoretically, but in the real world, which is what matters to us driveway mechanics). I cannot imagine the amount of time you spend on the non-operational part of running your business. Fixing vehicles and dealing with customers (and now staff) is hard enough (mentally and physically) - to then go home to tend to your family and somehow manage to throw out new, fully edited and polished up, quality content on a near daily basis is frankly incredible.

I would love a wife unit depicting how he does it all from filming, getting various camera angles and how he does his editing at home. I find others try to force a little comedy and skip over the important disassembly and repair. Don't change the format it's what sets you apart, if it's long it long but factual. "Been there, done that". As a retired GM suspension/brakes mechanic I did not have to do a lot of Ford's. When I did the disassembly went just as badly as yours. Special tools can help a bunch. I waited to just before I retired to go to local steel pipe shop and have them cut off several sizes of pipe to use with press to remove joints. I also saw a tool called "Tiger tool" which I wished I had bought to help with "u" joints. My left hand has the scars of the three surgeries it took to remove the metal from my hand when the ball joint broke. I decided that day to never beat a "u" joint out with a hammer again. Good video. You are right, Ray. Most of us don’t care how long the video is. We care about being entertained and educated and because we are “interested” in what you have to say the videos are never too long. The ONLY downside of a really long video (over an hour) is how much time someone has to watch. But if one was three hours, some would just have to watch it in chunks and KZbin allows us to stop the video and come back and pick up right where we left off. You know that people watch movies that are 2 plus hours long and don’t whine about it (unless they didn’t want to see it end) because they being entertained. You are entertaining and for those who don’t think so……well to each their own.

Longer videos are absolutely fine, Occasionally I skip some of the stuff which is repetitive but that is my choice. 95% of your videos I watch in full. Ray, not a big commenter. But!, I absolutely love the longer format, i.e. full video’s. It is more like I am there, over your shoulder, being shown by my favorite Uncle how to do something. Nothing left out, nothing left for me to figure out on my own. I really think that is what draws people in. Yeah, I and a thousand others KNOW the ball joint press cup has to allow the mass of the ball joint to move upwards into it but, there are a thousand others who are “mind-blown” and never considered the physics of it. You blast through it quick, so most are not annoyed, whilst the others are brought up to speed. Keep up the good work and know that so many are right there over your shoulder.

Ray, a tip for those trackbar ball joints. Under the boot, the stud thins out before it turns into the ball, and it's a really good place to just cut it off. Then you can get the press with a large cup on it way easier. I worked in a fleet shop and we did these all the time on 450s and stuff.
