Jack was playing at a time when you could hit ! I played defenseman in hockey , and if they stop checking or fore checking , ( European ) I'm taking up figure skating after my operation . Jack did not play DIRTY , he played tough ! Butkis played tough and , some may say , on the fence ? In hockey , we defensemen own the crease and the area around our goal tender . We don't watch the game or the puck . We watch the guy in our crease or around our net , period ! Take your eye off him and and follow the puck , and someone will pass it to the guy you failed to see . Defensive backs ? Hit anyone who does not have your color jersey ( except the ref ) period ! Jack hit you if you were no where near the ball , it's called paying attention !

Conrad Dobler ? Dirty Dirty Dirty and that's from his mother ! He will admit to every charge with a smile ! He brought the bad guy " Heel " from Pro Wrestling to the NFL and I loved watching him play ! Like Steve Austin playing pro ball ? These younger guys ( I'm 71 ) can't say . Different era , different game ! Can't touch these guys anymore and you can palm the ball , double dribble and walk , in basket ball ? Give me ice hockey , at least we can still hit !

Jack Tatum annihilated Darryl Stingley and I still remember this like it happened yesterday. In other incidents there were rumors that Raider players used to hold the opposing player up so that Jack Tatum could inflict more pain.

I'm a Vikings fan and ask Sammy White ? Between Al Atkinson and Jack Tatum , then add " Old Man " Willie Brown and you needed a NATO backed convoy to run through the Raiders secondary . Dirty no ! Hit Hard , oh hell yea ! Dobler was dirty ! Doug Atkins was a natural born , tough , bear like , meat eater ! Pat Fischer was a tough guy for his size ! Jack looked tough !

Tatum does not belong on this list, although at times he could be borderline. His fellow Raider safety, George Atkinson, on the other hand, does qualify for this list.

Younger fans look at all the helmet first hits in the past and immediately say "dirty". They don't realize that they were legal hits, and in fact, even high school football players were TAUGHT to tackle like that. The two players stand out as dirty to me were Conrad Dobler and Bill Romanowski.

Brandon Merriweather is my least favorite Washington player ever. He was always holding and headhunted to the point my mom was freaking out when they played the Bears. There was another big headhunting game he had against the bills I think it was the same season. That guy is definitely worthy of his spot on your list.

No penalty called on Tatum for either White or tragic Stingley hits. Tatum wasn't "dirty," that was the way the game was played. Watch the old films of the 60s and 70s. The Raiders didn't invent that state of play - they industrialized it.

The thing with Romanowski is he was defined by the spitting incident, but that’s not “dirty” - it’s disrespectful. Or, it’s at least a different definition of dirty. A dirty player is an injury risk. A dirty play is a cheap shot. It’s hitting (or kicking or biting or whatever) another player in a vulnerable position. Things like chop blocking or facemask tackling should get you on this list. Romanowski may be on it but not #1.

@@donc6781 Romo got into a fight in training camp with someone named Marcus Williams. Williams was a bubble player - a part time special teamer with 11 tackles in his career. After the fight he was cut, and never played in the NFL again. He sued Romo, and was awarded that year’s lost salary in payment. But he didn’t break his jaw, he recovered just fine - and most importantly, a training camp fight isn’t dirty. Get it? Hitting someone from behind is dirty. This, frankly, is probably roid rage - and that’s something else.
