So true - You tubers for the past 5 yrs or so love the Classic Chanel Jumbo and Medium . The Jumbo is so heavy I don’t see how anyone can wear it for more than an hour with anything in it. I have the Medium but only use it for special occasions as it holds very little. I am not concerned with buying only classics and now buy seasonal bags that I can really use. The Chanel seasonal bags may be short lived but if I am going to like and truly wear it more than a classic it is. Much better investment for me. (Even a classic chanel is not an investment)

Chanel classic flap is classic, but when everybody and their moms have one in black, it starts to get very boring. And more importantly, the bags need to work with your wardrobe and for your life style - that’s my #1 rule now (and this is coming from someone who had owned various classic flaps and reissues but sold them all coz they just don’t really work for me and they just sat in my wardrobe). My #2 rule is to buy something that is in a timeless/classic shape and neutral colors, but maybe with one or two details that make the bag stands out so that it has the classic look but not boring. To me there’s a fine line between being timeless vs. boring. Rule #3 is to look into vintage bags, those bags already stand the test of time so if you see one from two decades ago yet you can still picture what to wear it with, then you got a winner!

Rather than buying several trendy bags only to resell later, save up for a timeless and classic bag that will never go out of style. In the long run it will save you money and you will be much happier. But it is true, influencers on KZbin certainly have "influence". I would rather have a Chanel flap bag than two or three Gucci or Chloe's of the moment. You get where I am going with this. All great advice and tips, Amie!

My first luxe bag purchase was a seasonal off white binder bag, and I bought it over a year ago and I'm still in love. My second purchase was a more classic coach cross body. I don't have any other bags because I only bought what I LOVED and whats functional for me. My biggest tip is, buy only what you LOVE and not just love right now 😁

So so true. I’m so happy you mentioned the Chanel just Mademoiselle line (the Blake lively bag) because I remember that launch so vividly and I bought into it, as it was my first Chanel purchase and I didn’t feel ready to spend that much on the classic flap yet. It was a bag style that was tried and true for me (a tote) but the bag went out of style so quickly and even if I try to resell it, I would lose so much money on it. I rarely wore that bag too because it was in lambskin and for a slouchy tote bag, it wrinkled too easily so I wasn’t comfortable using it a lot. So many people buying the new 19 bag are saying that they believe it’s going to be the new classic but I don’t really believe it. Like you, I’ve seen too many hot and trendy chanel bags go from hot to zero so quickly, and Chanel is too expensive of a brand to risk that on. On a separate note, I’ve had my eye on the givenchy antigona for years now and even though it’s not trendy anymore, the bag is so understated and the design is so functional that I’m okay if it’s not in style anymore. Plus now I would be able to get it for pretty cheap on the second hand market!

Great advice! When I was younger, I fell into the Instagram worthy trendy bags...resulted in a lot of Chloe purchases...all of which I subsequently sold. Older and wiser, I gravitate more towards classics or something that fits my style.

When it comes to high end bags I mostly stick to classics in neutral colours. But there are times when I fall for an it bag. It takes a long time for me to save for one so things come and go from my wish list all the time. If a bag survives the saving process then I know I really want it and I am not just buying into the hype on social media. At a rough guess only about 10% do survive that long and end up being purchased. It’s a really good way of weeding out the KZbin made me do it items and getting only what I truly love and will use for many years.

I hope to never need to sell a bag... It seems so stressful! I've caught myself thinking "oh, if it doesn't work out I can just sell it" but I stop myself because I know I've never done it before, and it's definitely not that simple. While I can afford to occasionally splurge, like on my one Chanel bag, even trend bags on sale can be 1-2k... I often think that's 1-2k that could go towards a classic item. And I think there are "classics" and things that are classically-you, if that makes sense. A Chanel flap is a "classic" but if you only love to use top handle bags, it won't fit your version of classic 😊

Fashion houses can always take back their words on bags they declared a classic then discontinue it. Ex. Chanel GST was once a classic to not. I think that was a really pretty and functional chanel bag though.

So generally I'd say Prada tends to do well with being seen as classic because they never change their logo. They don't necessarily hold their value that well but their designs from 10 years ago don't look that different from their 2020 designs which always helps. The re-edition has more of a trendy shape though which if I had to guess, seems to be more like a passing fad. So it kind of balances out for me - not necessarily a super classic shape but from a fairly classic brand. I'd also keep in mind the popularity of bringing back old bag designs - Fendi baguette, Dior saddle bag... So whilst certain bags may fall out of favour after a few years, if you wait it out long enough, fashion often comes full circle!

Fell for the Cambon bag "new classic" speech. After market tanked. Trying to sell it proved nearly impossible. Lost a ton when it finally sold. Stopped wearing it out because of the crass comments from strangers asking if it was real/fake.

I'm still in the process of building my collection, but I instantly gravitate to trendy styles or not as popular styles done in a way that looks like my personality; for example the Fendi Kan I ribbon 2017 runway line. Luckily I found them all on a huge markdown a few years later 😅 I've been so tempted to get the Chanel 19 in houndstooth at RRP 🤦🏼‍♀️ It's such a huge investment. 😭 the price increases just scare me since it's still so popular and the "classic" term keeps getting thrown around more. It is definitely worth considering how you dress - I didn't realise what a difference different tones can make until I added the grey jumbo! I wear a lot of blue so the grey hasn't been too much of an issue for me, but if you know that you gravitate towards warm tones, then I would say the beige would be a better call. I definitely can't wear my grey jumbo with everything and it's only because I happen to have a lot of blue clothing that it gets as much use as it does :)

Amie - Does Net a Porter have promotions or discounts? I've been a customer of the site for over a decade and I've never seen a promotion, aside from their annual sales. I love Net a Porter. My Theresa and Farfetch are good too.
