Eric Johnson's live "Cliffs of Dover" tone from "Live from Austin Texas" (1988) has been scientifically proven to be the greatest guitar tone ever achieved by humanity and can never be surpassed, unless it's done by EJ himself. Finally, a list on tones of other players Fun fact: Hendrix didn't play a strat when recording Purple Haze. He played on a telecaster after breaking his strat's tuner(s) in the gig he played before going to the studio. This is why I stuck with telecaster. For the Bohemian Rhapsody tone cover, you could use you Paoletti triple P90(His Red Special has Burns tri-sonics which are really hot single coils) or any out-of-phase guitar you have. Oh, and Brian has a really light touch. His fretting is so soft he didn't need to refret after all these years of playing it.
@travistotle4 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure he recorded most of his classic stuff on a GIBSON rather than a strat as well. I believe he only broke the strat out for performances, although he may have recorded some songs with it too.
@salatieljyrustumanan49294 жыл бұрын
@@travistotle Yeah, however, I firmly believed he used whatever was lying around, too. I could tell very little of "Are You Experienced?" was on a strat since his guitar(s) were under repair/maintenance. But Purple Haze is obviously on a Telecaster on the bridge position. There's just that tele snap in that riff.
@bobcoleman90454 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure purple haze was not recorded on a tele...
@salatieljyrustumanan49294 жыл бұрын
@@bobcoleman9045 nah, you can hear the recorded version's snappy bite when Jimi hit the blue note on the opening riff(and on the tritones in the first notes). Unless you play a tele, you can't get that bright bridge sound. I tried it on strats and on a Les Paul with a Wah on toe position, can't get closer to the recorded than on telecasters.

Out of the gate, I've got to go with... Yngwie - Especially on the Rising Force album, Trilogy album, Odyssey album & the Fire and Ice album. That polished, round powerfully clean tone, with the singing sustain and vibrato. Yngwie's guitar tone at times,, sounds more violin like,, than it does an electric guitar. Alot of guitarist can play fast, but Yngwie can play fast and still maintain that fluidity in his playing,, that is so distinctive to his sound/tone. How could he not be on everybody's list..? Brian May - That beautiful, vocal like singing sustain. Simply, one of the most beautiful tones ever. Eric Johnson - Very smooth, not very percussive strokes on the strings. His tone sounds like it has quite alot of 'gain' in it. Very violin like tone. Gary Moore - His tone had depth, and like others on my list, his tone had such a wonderfully warm,, singing tone. Used feedback to achieve alot of his tone. SRV - Played larger gauge strings, and was able to get that powerful crunch, and yet retained such a brilliant tone also. What can I say, the guy could make his damn guitar talk..!

A Fulltone OCD is great for capturing that era of Alex Lifeson
@bradleyard41954 жыл бұрын
@@jeepman047 That doesn't make a lot of sense, as he was primarily using an MXR Distortion box into two Marshall Club and County combos for his dirty tone at the time. That would yield a much sharper tone than an overdrive, which is going to accentuate mids and lows. I could see using the OCD for getting his mid-70's tone, which in that era was mainly achieved with a cranked Fender Twin or Super, or a Marshall, and isn't exactly practical for home use. Later, he went through a slew of solid-state and tube amps (he was a noted endorser of both Gallien-Krueger and Dean Markley amps) before switching to H&K until the end of his career, when he issued his own line of Marshall Super Lead clones. The OCD would probably get you his tone in every era *except* Moving Pictures through probably Hold Your Fire.

"Tone is in the fingers...but it's also in the gear." THANK YOU!! Finally someone who recognizes that it isn't JUST ONE _or_ the other. SRV famously said, "Tone is in the fingers." But he obviously didn't mean it in the absolute literal sense. Everyone who talks about getting the SRV sound always seeks to downplay or even outright dismiss any relevance of gear to "sounding like SRV." Sure, on even the crappiest/cheapest gear, Stevie would still sound like Stevie, but it would NOT sound like Stevie playing on his HIGH END, HIGH QUALITY gear that he carefully selected, because clearly, "it's all in the fingers." No, he didn't use high end equipment in order to sound better, because he clearly could get _literally THE EXACT same_ sound from using any old cheap crappy gear, right? No, he didn't use a Tube Screamer to get a specific sound, because clearly through the shear magic of his fingers he could emulate that exact same sound exactly without using it. ....right? I just want to punch people in the face when I hear them say that. It's like, yeah, yeah, WE KNOW, having his exact gear and setup will not make any CRAPPY guitar player sound "like Stevie," -- WE GET IT. Thanks, Sherlock. You get a gold star for that one. Now tell us something we _don't_ already know, all you Einsteins out there. Why is it always assumed that anyone chasing after that tone could only be doing so in order to mask how $%tty of a player they are, and not because Stevie -- IN ADDITION TO his fingers, style, ability, nuance and dynamics, etc. (we _know,_ we _know)_ --had a killer tone even within the sound coming out of the GEAR ITSELF, that anyone could experience if they were to pick up his guitar and play, even as simply as by plucking a mere low E string, which even a crappy beginner could do? On another note, and speaking of SRV, HOW THE HELL WAS HE NOT INCLUDED HERE???!!! THIS IS AN OUTRIGHT SIN!!!!!!!! At least you included Hetfield. ..But to be honest, that tone is a _far cry_ from that actual tone. I've literally never heard anyone try to emulate that sound and get it even close to that heavy yet _tight,_ unmistakable, signature tone (with the exception of one person who used tone matching technology. It wasn't a "perfect" match, but it was close enough to be perfectly satisfied with it, imo, and that's coming from an obsessive compulsive audiophile).
