Someone probably mentioned it already, but any time you have through holes into a coolant or oil passage, the bolts need to be coated in RTV. Likely what is causing your water pump leaks. Keep rocking buddy. Good work! Oh…and if you search “injector copper washers”…about a million come up. Go on size, not application.
@dieseJL Жыл бұрын
Yeah I didn’t know those bolt holes were through actually until I watched chicken house mechanic. Put some goop on them and we’re all good now!

Good job.. Keep up the excellent work and attention to detail. All of the cleaning of everything, replacing things that are broken, torquing to spec, researching the right way to do it before doing it if you are not familiar with it, and so on…is what will separate you from the bulk of the web. I will continue to follow to see how things come along!! Love the machines.

Nice job on the rebuild, now you just need to get a muffler on it and do final adjustments. The sweat and oils on your fingers is enough to make tight tolerance pump internals stick if you aren't careful . I was hoping she'd fire off on a small shot of ether, I've been doing diesel tractor motors for over 30 years. It wouldn't be the first time I've had them real close to running on the starter and they won't quite kick off . There has been the odd time I didn't have any ether on first start of an old school manual shift transmission tractor and just given them a short tow . I was buying parts in a shop where a perfectionist mechanic worked years ago, he flattened 2 batteries and near burned a starter and it still wouldn't start. it was close and he was convinced something wasn't right , and certainly wasn't going to give it a sniff of ether as that's all bad. I said tow it it's own length and it'll go He told me I didn't know anything it should fire right up on the starter, he'd been lucky his whole career until that day I think. After another 15 mins I said you've got nothing to loose so he did it. Yeah looks like I did know something after all, with all the best measuring in the world you could be on the tight side of tolerances. Or have not quite the right amount of compression to get it running that first time. Thanks for sharing ,Take care

You rock keep up the good work. As for the leaking coolant. Most of the holes on old school stuff are not a blind hole they go into a water jacket. They usually need some type of thread sealant.

Copper washers used for connecting brake hoses might' work for the injectors. I can only assume they are sold in different sizes. I usually keep extras in my shop as I replace brake lines a lot living in a rust belt state. Hope this info helps if the injectors don't seal or if needed on a future project.

Next time, heat those copper washers with a torch until they are red hot. Let them slowly cool and that will anneal (soften) them for reuse. Old mechanics trick….. Judging from all that smoke, it’s seriously over fueling.

Great Job on the tractor! How much did that restoration end up costing you? What was the charge from the machine shop to do your engine? I am planning on doing what you did and would like to know what it is going to cost. Thanks! Jim
@dieseJL7 ай бұрын
I probably had 10 grand into it all said and done. The engine work was about a grand and then I probably had another grand in it in parts. I would do it again... I would be better at it next time though. I do not think about the money I spent as wasted, I think it's a hell of a tractor for that price. I will get my money out of it.

What did you do differently to get it in time? Why exactly was it out of time? You appeared to follow the directions exactly. I have the same model, with a rebuilt injector pump that smokes almost as bad. It did not before the pump was rebuilt. It's a lot of unburnt fuel.
@dieseJLАй бұрын
I think I was just very, very diligent about lining up the marks. The way you time it is a sight window here, a sight window there… I didn’t realize that being off just a touch would make such a big difference. You could also just crack the fasteners loose and turn it a little while it’s running either way to see if it clears up just like the distributors on the old gassers.
