How do we know if a situation should be considered spiritual abuse? What are the various types of trauma that can occur? Are we using the most effective terms when we talk about trauma in a faith context?
In this episode we will be discussing the specifics of spiritual trauma starting with the basics. Dr. St. Jean is a professor of Social Work at King University who has served in churches for decades. He joins the conversation to share the latest from his book 'Spiritual Trauma: A Guide for Healing Your Heart from Church Hurts'.

This one was hard for me. Sean can sometimes come across like a ministry staff apologist, and that's...hard. I have personally had more than my fair share of the B variety (as have many of my friends), so I think maybe that shouldn't be so easily set aside. Gonna need to process this one...

"We need to meet each other half way" - I actually disagree with this. Vehemently. Where trauma is concerned, it is like a knife stabbed into the gut of our spirits. if you stick it in 9 inches and pull it out 4.5 inches, the knife is still in my gut. Half way isn't going to suffice. Half way between abuse and health is still abuse.

Loved 'conformity is not unity' and yet I see this expectation to 'get behind leadership' when others have convictions of mutuality vs. complementarianism. Differing voices are not tolerated or respected, only shut down (or disfellowshipped) Twenty years ago, I read Gene Edwards' "Letters to a Devestated Christian" because so many left at that time. You acknowledged the same principle about toxicity *there is something served that attracted you to the church. You're not an idiot. But we need to do the work and use that knowledge to help to show compassion to ourselves and others. Another amazing discussion--thank you!

I am very encouraged over this mature discussions you are having here. I think it is so good to put words on these issues. Thanks! But somehow, I think not all cultural conformaties are bad per se, but only if them makes you feel locked in or false. All 'families' had their own unique soul, smell or atmosphere or manners and that is a natural thing, but not necessary a bad thing. But if a culture is an enabler and not only a constrainer it can be good. However, to see and talk about the culture (good and bad) is a helpful and restoring approach and you are really contributing to this good culture. 🤗🙏

Wow! What a fantastic and helpful conversation. Hi Sean! 👋 🙂 As a Myers-Briggs geek, I can't help but comment. I originally typed as an enfj but in later years realized it was because I answered the questions in accordance with my VALUES rather than my true preferences. I had been trained to view extroversion as "more spiritual" so when the test asked if I'd prefer to go out with friends or stay home and read a book, I of course said, "go out with friends" (but that was *never* true 😄). So I suspect that part of the phenomenon when disciples were typing the same, was probably often due to them not being honest with themselves. I'm fully at peace with my introversion now and know that I have "super powers" other than a sparkly outward demeanor. 😊

I was sued by my "pastor" for "slander" when I was making some videos about spiritual abuse. It seems hopeless to even talk about it
