I’m still a little confused as to how the grind by weight function is good for cupping. When cupping, aren’t you normally cupping different coffees? Wouldn’t you want to weigh out the dose for each coffee? To me, it does not make sense to use grind by weight when switching between different coffees for cupping. Am I missing something here?
@BensCoffeeRants2 жыл бұрын
I think they cup a bunch of the same coffee for different people to try, but yeah, not as useful if you have 4 different coffees you want to cup beside each other and compare, or even 2 or 3 of the same with a different roast or whatever. But it is nice to have the feature I think, even if you don't plan on using it.

Maybe I’m missing the point of this…but why have grind by weight on what looks like a single dose grinder? If you’re using this as single dose to use different beans or for different brew methods, you’re going to be weighing your beans on input. Did I miss part about a hopper? Just trying to figure out why you’d pay extra for the scale, grind by weight tech if this thing is meant to be a single dose grinder. It seems like this would be geared much more toward a commercial, use the same beans in a hopper, type application.

Great video, very in-depth. I really appreciate these 1st looks! The grind to weight is a cool from a technical perspective, but I really don't see the point w/out a hopper, and i don't feel like most people who spend 1k+ dollars on an at-home grinder wouldn't want to single-dose. If you invest that much into your coffee, why would you leave your beans exposed to the atmosphere in an open 'hopper' after your grind? Personally, I would rather spend that money on a Weber-style dosing cup, or some other quality of life features like the movable dosing cup holder on the EG-1, or anti-static technology similar to the Ode Gen2. I'll take solid hardware improvement over 'smart' features any day of the week, but I do understand they want to sell their scales with this grinder so I'm sure that encouraging more software integration.

I dont really get the point of GBW on a zero retention single dosing grinder?

So the interesting that you can do with a hopper is use GBW to dial in a coffee. Dump coffee in and then adjust grind size until you're dialed in. The dose will be the same every time!
@IamMotionMedia2 жыл бұрын
@@BrianQuan yeah i guess in that sense it offers some but minor usefulness. If you change coffees regularly or daily even this method is of no help. When you factor in differences in roast level, variety, and density.

So what is your verdict? How does the grinder do on taste clarity and body? Any thoughts compared to the Lagom P64 or something like the DF64? The stalling at low RPMs is a bit concerning, but perhaps can be seen past if the the grinder does well otherwise.

Who woulda thought it would be Acaia, the company with a $300 scale, that would be leading the way in affordable, high end grinders?
@Andrew-wp1bz2 жыл бұрын
They’re not. This grinder is still just a 64mm flat. The df64 will give you the same grind results for >$600 and you can put whatever burrs you want in it.
@HappyAccidentVideos2 жыл бұрын
@@Andrew-wp1bz I wouldn’t call DF64 “high end.” Maybe mid range. Issues out of the box, mods needed to get it to work properly, quality control inconsistencies, no RPM adjustment, no auto purge, plus it’s not very aesthetically pleasing. I know there’s a lot of DF Stans around, but it doesn’t have that high end, premium feel to it. It’s not a bad grinder, either, don’t get me wrong, but saying “a 64 flat is a 64 flat” is like saying a Chevy and a Lamborghini are the same because they both have wheels. Sorry.
@Andrew-wp1bz2 жыл бұрын
You totally missed my point. I agree that the df64 isn’t a high end or premium grinder. I don’t think the acacia is a high end grinder either. It’s premium build quality, but hardly an affordable option in its category (2nd most expensive 64mm I can think of). It has a better workflow, and overall better craftsmanship over the df64, but the differences are largely superficial. To use the vehicle metaphor. You can have two dodge trucks both with a cummins 6.7. Both have the same performance, but one cost a thousands more because it says Laramie and has luxury features.
@HappyAccidentVideos2 жыл бұрын
@@Andrew-wp1bz I don’t think I missed your point. Kinda weird to be arguing about this. I guess it’s just a difference if opinion. To me, the P64 is the start of the high end grinder experience, and this grinder is comparable to the P64, but much cheaper. Being 64mm doesn’t mean it’s necessarily inferior.
@patompoomwichitchoti60512 жыл бұрын
as my experience P64 can run with around 400 rpm with no sign of burr stalled.
@BensCoffeeRants2 жыл бұрын
Which RPM # Setting? It might also depend on the burr type used, on mine with light roast coffee for espresso I've had similar mini stalls at setting 1-2, and once even at 3 with the SSP Cast burrs. Setting 3 may be 500RPM or 570RPM depending on what version manual... (older manuals stated it starts at 200RPM and numbers are slightly different as a result). Setting 2 may be 430RPM or 350 RPM I think it seems to do better with the P64 stock burrs, and probably the SSP MP too, but I still had some mini-stalls with those, same with the Weber Key on lower RPMs, but never had them completely lock up or anything. If 600 RPM is the lowest it goes on the Orbit, the P64 has a lot more low-end range (300 RPM or possibly even 200RPM), but a little less high range (1400RPM being the max on P64) I think Orbit can go to 1500RPM it looks like (not a big deal). With (the old) P64 stock burrs, and SSP Cast burrs to some degree, Lower RPM helps reduce fines and gives more flavour clarity, and less body. With the SSP MP Burrs I found higher RPM actually worked best for me (for espresso) like grinding at setting 7, which is around 1100RPM. With Filter/ coarser brew methods though going even lower than 600 RPM likely has some benefits! So that could be one potential downside to the Orbit vs P64, but I do like the additional connectivity features with the scale and app on the Orbit.
