When a man (Christopher Lloyd) claiming to be Fester, the missing brother of Gomez Addams (Raul Julia), arrives at the Addams' home, the family is thrilled. However, Morticia (Anjelica Huston) begins to suspect the man is a fraud, since he cannot recall details of Fester's life. With the help of lawyer Tully Alford (Dan Hedaya), Fester manages to get the Addams clan evicted from their home. Gomez realizes the two men are conspiring to swindle the Addams fortune and that he must challenge Fester.

couple of things; -Wednesday's name comes from an old poem about the days of the week kids are born on, specifically the line "Wednesday's child is full of woe", since she's a morose little girl. -Pugsley, when they were developing the sitcom back in the 1960's, was going to be named Pubert, but tv execs in 1963 didn't like that -Morticia and Gomez have always been noteworthy as the first tv couple to not only seem like they were believably in love, but actually capable of having children -Fester, in this movie, actually IS Gomez's brother, and did get amnesia in the Bermuda Triangle, with the (fake) Dr Pinderschloss convincing him he was her son. The lightning bolt brought back his memories of actually being the real Fester, which were coming back in little ways such as the Mamushka -In the original tv series, Fester was Morticia's uncle, not Gomez's brother, but they thought this worked better for the movie. -though the original comic strip created by Charles Addams was basically about spooky sight gags, from the tv sitcom onwards, the Addams Family was really about a family that was outwardly strange and maybe even disturbing, but were inwardly kind, loving, accepting, and fiercely loyal. This was an intentional skewering of the typical tv family which was outwardly prim and proper and clean cut, but full of squabbling jealousy, pettiness and bigotry.

So I feel like you may have missed this tidbit. That is the actual Fester. When he ran off after the issue with him & Gomez at the Debutante ball he went to the Bermuda triangle where he got amnesia and was found by the loan shark who essentially decided to claim him. The lightning that shocked him from the book he used to get rid of the lawyer and the loan shark rejolted his memory.

I always do love the irony of the Addams Family, they are unusual in their way of life; gothic, murderous and supernatural but at the same time they are perhaps one of the most ideal and healthiest depiction of a loving family, Gomez and Morticia are couple goals (aided by Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston's great chemistry and magnetic presence), they encourage and dote on their children and they're very dedicated to family This also helped take off Wednesday's actress Christina Ricci's career

What is really amazing is that the Addams Family was originally meant to be a mockery of a typical nuclear family by representing the opposite characteristics of one. Instead, we get a family dynamic that oddly works and is very loving and very dedicated to one another. Most people actually see Gomez and Moticia as #relationshipgoals

The great thing about the Addams' is that, generally, they are a truly healthy and functional family. They clearly care about each other, are willing to work hard to protect each other, and Gomez and Morticia are *clearly* still madly in love. All in all, aside from the macabre aspects that are clearly played up for laughs for the movie's sake, they're a damn near ideal family unit

The best thing is, therapists actually have agreed that the Adams Family is a very healthy family dynamic and a very healthy marriage. I mean, get me a man that looks at me like Gomez looks at Morticia. xD Honestly, I love the Adams Family. They are hilarious, sweet, and full of life (despite the morbid humor and gothic feel) I never found this to be a horror show. Morbid Comedy...but in all the best ways.

You missed it, but Gordon really was Fester. You probably miss the line where his "mom" said, "I should have left you where I found you..." Also when he opened the hurricane book at the end lightning struck his head which gave him his memory back. Another clue earlier was when they were doing the dance. There's no way he could have known that without being the real Fester because his muscle memory kicked in.

The Addams family have always been a favourite of mine, especially the two 90’s films. They’re just a creepy, kooky, eccentric family yet they are very familial, showing love and adoration to both kids and spouse constantly and without a hint of embarrassment or self consciousness. It was not at all common to see a married couple that displayed such public displays of affection and adoration when the first adaptation came out. It also played on the whole “eccentric European moves to America and is wealthy yet no one really knows what he does” anxiety from the times.

I've always loved how subtle this film is about whether the Addams are supernatural (i.e. vampires, ghouls & witches). I also love films that show a lighthearted, human-like side of supernatural creatures tbh, i.e. Hotel Transylvania, Monster family (2017), Son of Bigfoot, Dark Shadows (2012), etc.

Oh yes, The Addams Family is such an pop culture classic. Fun fact about them Mortica and Gomez. They were the first married couple to kiss,show any love or affection for each other and slept in one bed in TV history. In all other TV shows couples slept in separate beds etc back then they were like the accountant and his wife in this. I love the extra bit that the wife became happy when she became an Addams lol.

If I'm not mistaken, Thing was originally depicted in the *New Yorker* cartoons as you see him in the movie (a hand with no body attached), but because this was difficult to pull off with the limited special effects of 1960's television, on TV he acquired a box.

I always found Fester as Morticia’s uncle better than as Gomez’s brother cause in no way he looked like his brother tbh 😂 also I think the reason the hand was usually played through the box in 60s show was because that’s how they could pull it off in the series. I guess in the comics he was always supposed to be without body independently without the box.

In the original script, it would have been revealed that Gordon was not really Fester, but would choose to be him in the end because he had found home and family with the Addamses. Several cast members, including Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston, wanted him to be the real Fester. The cast members who wanted to make the change to the story chose a representative to appeal their case directly to Barry Sonnenfeld. The one they chose was Christina Ricci. Interestingly, Christopher Lloyd himself was ambivalent to the whole thing; willing to go with either storyline.

I have just binged all of the 60's TV show episodes but have never seen any movies. Gotta say they have a lot in common but also many things are different. Would recommend checking those the 60's show too!

I like that it's him bonding with the kids that brings Fester back around subconsciously, also I've been wondering this for a while: since that story Craven told them about finding Fester tangled in a tuna net in Miami turned out to be true, does that imply she knew he really was Fester all along? Especially that line while she's waiting/looking for him: "I never should've used him."
