A female ferret, for example, doesn't start ovulating without the very violent mating ritual initiated by a male, and many animals need the right light and temperature levels to enter hibernation or brumation phases. Likewise, the reason iodine works on axolotls, is because they need iodine to make the necessary thyroid hormones. All of which is not to say SCP-1788 is right, it's just not entirely implausible.
