Nicely done. When I was a kid we had a fireplace in our basement family room that dad eventually sealed off so we could add a square cast iron wood stove and vent it into the fireplace. No windows on the doors... just the screw type vents. Man that thing could put out some heat! In fact, it could heat the entire house - a 3 bedroom ranch we built in 1974. That stove became a lifesaver during Ohio's infamous "Blizzard of '78". Our power was out for 9 days, but the house never went below 70 degrees... we could cook on the flat top of the stove or over the coals, melted snow for drinking, doing dishes, flushing the toilet, even taking a bath! Some of my friends (I was 12 at the time) were huddling around their kerosene heaters all in one room, and we were in shorts and T shirts lol. Thanks for sharing - good stuff! 🤠

Wow!! This brought back a tons of memories from my childhood!! Every Christmas my grandfather would burn all the boxes and wrapping paper in the fireplace…….. and of course catch the clay tile flue on fire…. 😂😂😂. The best part was that he was the chief of the volunteer fire department!!! 😂😂😂. But he did have the cleanest flue in the county!!! The moisture content is extremely important as you indicate. Great content and very in-depth video !! 👍👍🔥🔥

I freeze all winter with electric heat. There's nothing like the heat of a wood fired stove! The picture of the fire helped a little bit, thanks Brock.

I've got a free-standing woodstove on a one-foot riser in my living room. By putting a box fan in the hallway to the bedrooms, I can push the cold air along the floor back towards the woodstove and the hot air moves along the ceiling back into the bedrooms. That way, I can heat the whole house. The nice part about it is that it's sized perfectly to heat at recommended maximum, so I get minimal buildup in my stovepipe. The stove is also equipped with a catalytic converter. Been using it with no complaints since 1999. And wood heat is probably the most comfortable heat you can get. I love it!

Hello Brock. We have been burning with a QuadraFire insert for over 20 years. Non-catalytic reburn technology that really has treated us well for all these years. Thanks for the education on a catalyst type stove.

I have been burning wood since 1984. Same old woodburner. The new ones are so much more efficient than my old one. Just wonder how many cords of wood I have run through that thing in all these years. Gas oil and chainsaw chains. Hours of cutting stacking unstacking then splitting, restacking. Hauling it in the house. Cleaning up the mess. If I didn't have ash trees falling down all around me don't think I would mess with it. If I had to buy it I know I wouldn't mess with it.

I like the air vents on that unit, you could tune the house temp very well with those. I grew up with an Ashley wood heater in our living room and there is nothing like coming in from the cold and standing by a wood heater.

I think that’s the first time we’ve been in your house for a video since you hurt your back. I see you’ve added a life-size caricature of yourself. I wish you could see the woodstove I built for my shop. It’s almost 4 feet around and 4 feet deep. I added Vortx generating heat exchangers. I haven’t capped the end yet and added a fan but I have the stuff. It works pretty good just like it is for now….

For cold start fires, I keep the side door outside cracked, and the fireplace door cracked. This tip was given to me when I first had my insert installed 10 years ago. It certainly helps create a draft on a cold flu. Keeping the door shut, the smoke would leak out the vents into the living room. Also, the cast iron insert is a bit safer if you have young kids around. Cast iron doesn’t burn you immediately when it’s hot. Whereas, the metal ones will instantly burn them if they touch it.

Thanks for this video. About 10 years ago, I worked for a business which sold Blaze King wood stoves. These units have catalytic combusters to return the smoke and increase their efficiency. The EPA rated the stoves at about 90% efficient. Blaze King recommends that the wood should be seasoned for 2 years, under cover. Some of the best hardwoods to burn in stoves are oak, maple, elm, beech, ironwood.

Thank you for putting out this video I have a fire place and was thinking about this idea. The only draw back is the cost to do this type of heating. But on the other hand oil prices are going out of sight so it may now may become a reality.

The other drawbacks are the amount of work and the extra space needed for firewood. Wood needs to be split, moved, stacked, covered, seasoned. Kindling needs to be made. Fire needs to be made from scratch and managed. Ash needs to be removed and disposed. Chimney needs to be cleaned. All that said, we love our fireplace. Nothing as comforting as wood heat. And being able to heat the home when the power goes out is a great peace of mind.

Well done. BUT.... before you open the door after it has been burning, to reload, open the bypass. Did you see the smoke come out when you relit the fire? That's why you open the bypass when reloading. Also crack the door first to get the draft sucking the smoke back.

When we bought are house 2 1/2 yrs ago we put a regency I2400 in to heat the house. We took out a big wood gobbler insert from 1970. If i could supply my on wood i would of went with the I2450 with the converter in it but with having to buy wood i decided it was not worth the extra money for the converter because i ant supplying my on own wood and have not regret it love the dual burn on the I2400
