This video is very helpful. I'm in the market for something to help reduce my propane usage because it's so dang expensive to heat my 2 story house. I've got a large open hearth fireplace that just is useless as it is. Barely heats the living room. Before watching this i was set thinking i wanted a catalytic insert but you stressing how it really doesn't matter seems to help ease my mind and realize i can focus on price and aesthetic details more than what type of secondary combustion it's using. My wife was saying she wants one with a ledge she can put a kettle on.

Our fireplace eats a 30" logs 3-4 at a time and up in smoke, feed it again in a few hours. At my mountain house I have an arch opening to the fireplace. It's quite large and I'm concerned about the surround piece covering it correctly. It is a masonry fireplace but has a metal 'heatilator' insert. You mentioned the metal boxes aren't good for inserts. Suggestions? Also, are you going to carry any rocket heaters (certified UL)? P.S. My primary home has an Osburn 2400 in the masonry fireplace. What a great stove. It was installed about 20 years ago, give or take a few years. It's the stove that sticks out from the face of the fireplace. Fantastic stove. One thing to remember about the inserts that could cause an issue. If you have a hearth that is just enough for the fireplace then put in the flush insert. If not you have to add a fireproof piece in front of it. There is a clearance needed to combustables such as the floor. This is the issue with the mountain house. I'll need a flush mount.

@@embersliving Okay, I've been reading many older posts on how to go about this. What we have is a Heatform fireplace. The guy who came to offer me a bid on my old homes roof also does fireplace inserts. (We are waiting on roof as it would have to be stripped down to original 1878 wood and built up ...etc. He said we have time. Ugh! ) Anyway, he also said the metal firebox surround was in decent shape except for the top flue which was rusted out. Came apart actually and he suggested an insert. It's not terribly big 36"wide by 24" high... First we must get a good clean out by a chimney sweep person. Do you have any ideas on a good insert. I understand there remains a tax rebate till the end of this year. Don't think we should wait until later too.

Our place is 1850 sq ft., we have bitterly cold winters, our older insert isn't of the highest capacity, though the heat slowly fills the entire house if the doors to the bedrooms are left open and there's NO cold zones! I have a house built in 1774 and went on Facebook marketplace and bought a built in made in the 90s. I installed a 8 inch insulated stainless pipe (fun times!!). This unit has a blower and my fireplace is huge, I am so disappointed with its performance despite the manual claiming over 70% efficiency and 45k BTU. I will be giving you guys a call because I’m tired of burning 50 gallons of propane a week.

@@embersliving I am thinking regency ci2700 or napoleon s25i. Can you suggest which one will be better ? I know napoleon is not catalytic and regency is hybrid that has both. I never saw the napoleon in person, but regency looked too small inside to put a lot of woods to burn overnight. Or it doesn’t need to fill it up full?

I hate to be nitpicky but Websters does in fact recognize Heighth as a Noun and dialectal variant of height. You're correct on Masonary. Js.

@loribernardisunwell9663 Indeed, Webster's will tell you themselves that they record dialects. In that sense, "iffin" is a word. People defer to any source that agrees with them. Say "heighth" all you like. After all, what is diction but the Brownian motion of blathering mouths?

I have a traditional rock fireplace. When I had it built I was able to find a unit that was a wood rack held by 2 inch square tubing. The thermostat was inside the tubing and connected to a covered box with a 100cfm blower. Everything set inside the fireplace except the blower vent which the face cover sat on, so the heat blows directly in the room. It works wonderful and still does. I purchased it in 1998 and installed it myself. The tubing is begining to crack slightly so I have been searching for another unit just like it. I have not been able to find it again. Do you have any resource that could find this type of unit?. It works wonderful!

I have a Vermont castings Montpellier.. longest burn you’re going to get on that insert is like 3-4 hours tops... no such thing as an “overnight” burn.. EPA ruined these, I can’t choke the fire down it’s wide open roaring 100% of the time

Once the fire burns down to coals no smoke comes out, but if your adding wood without it burnt down crack the door open just enough to poke the fire around with the poker then the draft will work better to fully open door
