Greg Dulli may have been consistently the coolest man on Earth for the last 30 years. He has possibly the most distinct voice and style in rock music. He writes the perfect songs for that voice. In the 1990's, he looked like he could be a model. Now he looks like he just got out of a bar fight. No matter what he's doing, he's always badass at doing it.

This was the first song I'd ever heard by the Whigs and I caught it by chance on either 98.5 KOME or live 105.3 in the bay area. From the opening riff I was hooked and made waves to Tower Records to buy all their albums. Flashbulb memory for sure.

I'm a recent convert. I feel like they've been right under my nose since I lived in Memphis in the early 90's. They recorded at Ardent and that album shares some DNA with Pleased to Meet Me. Paul Buchignani, who took over the drums for a stretch, was in one of my favorite Memphis bands, Neighborhood Texture Jam. I now realize the genius of Greg Dulli and am making up for lost time.

Thank you for this breakdown of this style. Didn't know the directors name until now. I love videos done in this style. If I'm not mistaken based on the style he did "Until It Sleeps" by Metallica and "Hearts Filthy Lesson" by David Bowie and I'd honestly wager Nine Inch Nails "Closer" as well. Those 'strobing fades' SCREAM 90s, you never see them anymore. They're actually really simple to do - it's just manually opening and closing the lens aperture. Consumer lenses today don't let you do that, but if you get an older lens or a cinema lens you can do it to your heart's content. When I first got one I did that trick on EVERYTHING and it really does nail the aesthetic - I have videos of my dog in a forest that you could just drop into a NIN video if you made it black and white and slowed it down. It's a great way to make a boring alt-rock band look interesting for a half a second - that's why you do a sudden jagged cut away as soon as they come into focus, so the viewer doesn't have time to actually take in the low-budget background, bad lighting, and designer thrift store clothes and think about how ridiculous they are. (Not that the Whigs are boring, but that's what you do for, like, Silverchair).
