I am 76 years old. I exercised like a madman from age 11 to 21. At age 21 I started working long hours. From age 21 to age 70 I went to the gym a few times a week. I moved off the grid 5 years ago and did no formal exercise for the last 5 years. I am starting back on weight training. Let's see if it's really "permanent ".

Does this mean that taking anabolic steroids and then coming off would increase your muscle synthesis potential for life? (Muscle cells retain more nuclei)

Bodybuilders use to call this muscle memory
@LK-pc4sq4 күн бұрын
I am Diabetic but also, in the early to late 2000s, I worked out. I tell people "a person who works out and like, the law WWE wrestler, Randy Savage, who was muscular, it is a myth that you cant burn off the food you ate. He had cardiac arrest event and it was due to Plaque build up from Atherosclerosis. I want to also know, does high insulin levels cause accelerated aging? I have read that it does! Annette Larkins, on youtube is a 30 plus year raw vegan. Meaning her A1c and Insulin levels were so low, she aged 45% slower then the public.

Not just bodybuilders, it's a general term in the entire sport.
@edl6534 күн бұрын
Yes! I suspect this to be the case. Working out creates a higher baseline that makes future working out after a period of rest, to become more efficient. I never really researched the idea, but this video confirmes it. - This presents a good reason for working out early in life to help recuperate muscle mass later in life after extended sickness and non-exercise periods.

I hit the gym a lo in my 20s and 30s not really trained for about 20 or so years, now I’m 57 just started back and I’m quickly gaining muscle mass quickly after a few weeks my missis said that’s mad I can see it coming back, so I agree muscle memory is a wonderful thing but let’s not forget I put the work in when I was younger 👍

“What gets measured gets managed”. Recommend a body composition scale fore everyone, to be aware of and track body fat, muscle mass, bone mass. Life changing when we see things going in the wrong direction and motivating when going the right way. And no, just assuming or guessing is not that same as seeing your actual trend lines over time. Before anyone jumps on the “they are not accurate” bandwagon, mine is, is all I can say.

It would be interesting to see if myokine secretion also decreased along with the decreases in muscle mass associated with the lack of resistance training. Or could it be that the increased nuclei also lead to increased transcription and translation of the genes for certain myokines, leading to enhance myokine production per unit area of the muscle cell, including when muscle mass decreased?

Does this apply to cardiac muscle?
@LK-pc4sq4 күн бұрын
good question. Cardiac muscles are critical as they do not have any stem cells. The key to remember, ALWAYS keep blood pressure low! That is from Diet. Then exercise helps to boost Mitochondria subdivision which means it helps to keep a1c low in the blood stream.
@EVanDoren3 күн бұрын
Nope. Cardiomyocytes generally don't grow. In fact, it would be pathological.

This is just how it works with fat too. Your body builds "warehouses" to hold the fat and those warehouses sit there waiting to quickly store fat again as soon as you overeat again. I think they tear them down with about a year of non use.

In my 20s, I tried to do 2 things: don’t gain weight (by fat) and build muscles. From what I heard, both, muscle and fat cells have kinda memory. If fat cells once formed, it will be harder to keep your weight the entire life. I’m no expert by any means but that’s what I observed on myself and on friends/family.
